Me and fellow Fray-fan Josh just got kicked off another thread for talking Fray out of context.

Sorry about that, but if you're a Fray-freak you understand the dillema. Fray is fantastic, but where do you discuss it?

For those who don't know; Fray is the Joss Whedon Comic that follows the Slayer legend several hundred years into the future. It is blow-your-mind, amazing.

I'm going to try opening a separate topic here. Here are some possible Fray-related questions for discussion.

1. First of all don't you just love it? As I've said before, if I was a girl, I'd tatoo the Fray-tatoo on my shoulder.

2. If you had a choice of seeing a new Buffy movie, or a Fray movie, which would you choose?

3. Do you think the Fray legend clarifies the Slayer legend of BTVS, or confuses it?

4. What's your favourite Fray thing, bit, or scene?

5. Is it ethical to download Fray episodes from the internet? I believe the 8 part mini-series is discontinued. As I understand it, the only way to get the comic is second-hand. If that's the case I don't think you are ripping off the writer, or artists by downloading from the internet.

Yay! Fray-tastic! Alright, let's do this then:

1. That tattoo is way too cool to be allowed just for girls! I want one! Except I'm terrified of those pointy needle things...
anyway, yes I do love Fray! It's like a magical extension to the Buffy mythology, full of humour, twists, creepy moments, and plenty of Joss' trademark unique characters.

2. Buffy movie Fray movie. Hard choice. As much I would love to see a Buffy movie ( and I really <i>really</i> would) I think that Fray is more open to do a movie, either of the events in the comics or something else. I really feel like the story of Buffy and her friends is over and I'm not desperate for a Buffy movie unless Joss feels it is essential. However, I think a Fray movie would be great. As well as the spectacular future-city design, there are some scenes in the comics that I get shivers from just visualizing them in my mind. On the big screen...woah. It might even be very cool in animation.

3. I'm not sure whether Joss had the Slayer-line-altering events in Chosen in his mind when he wrote Fray. He does say, in a letter in the last issue, that he has that issue to deal with in the potential Fray sequel. Maybe he'll fit the every-potential-a-Slayer thing into Fray. It won't be too hard. It doesn't really clarify the Slayer legend, or confuse it. I mean, all the glimpses of past Slayers are superb and Fray does fill in some post-buffy but pre-Fray backstory, but overall the Slayer legend remains the same as it was before- pretty clear already, I thought.

4. Ohhhh, impossible.
I love Mel's acceptance of her destiny as seen in your signature.
I love the final, glorious, triumphant panel of the series.
I love the scene between Mel and Urkonn in the last issue.
I love the full-page drawing of Mel's discovery of
Loo's
body and the picture of Mel carrying the body through the streets.
I love the spectacular, water-soaked fight in issue 6, and Mel's hilarious conversations with Gunther. "And I wish, just once, you would come and see me in a sssskirt..."

5. I just checked on TFAW, and all 8 issues are available to buy and in stock. Plus, soon the graphic novel of all 8 issues combined is coming out. I don't think it's ethical to download the issues unless you are really unable to get the comics e.g. you can't order online and have no way of getting them in a store or something. But then again, i guess they're just comics, and if they were written by someone other than Joss, i probably wouldn't be so against cheating him out of sales figures!

Long post. Please respond 🙂

Is there perhaps some place I can download them from, cause I wouldn't know where else to get them from. We don't have the specialised comic stores here, and I'm not to keen on ordering online.

If you're quick, you can get most of them here:

Fray Eps 1 - 7

but you have to promise me you'll send Joss Whedon's agent the comic book price for 7 episodes. Ask him to piece off the artists. 😀

You can read them with IRfran if you unzip the .RAR. You can also download an excellent Viewer designed to read comics even if they're still zipped. The link no longer works where I got it, but it's called David Ayton - Comic Reader Version 1.

Actually another reason to read them on your computer with the David Ayton Reader is because they're even better that way. There's a part where Fray is falling through the city, and I swear you feel like you're falling with her.

Well Josh... it looks like you and me are the only Fray fanatics in all of Buffdom, so I will respond to your request, and answer my own questions, then maybe the two of us at least can hash it out.

1. Yes I love Fray. If you could marry a comic book character, I'd be first in line. Failing that though, I'm thinking I might paint the Fray tatoo on the doors of my old, beat up, Chev.

2. I wanna Fray movie. It's more cinematic than Buffy, I think. A Buffy sequel would make a better television mini-series

3. Like you, I also read the article concerning the comic convention where Joss promised to make sense of the confusion caused to the slayer legend by Fray. Here are a few of the questions I hope he answers:

* Fray episode 3 seems to suggest Buffy and friends will fight a giant apopolyptic battle at the end of which there will be no demons or magic. Obviously that hasn't happened yet. What does that say?

* At the end of Chosen there are multiple slayers. In Fray, Melaka is referred to as the Chosen One. What happened between Chosen and Fray to recreate the "One World, One Slayer" rule?

* If Fray's brother has the Slayer's dreams and powers of prophecy, does that mean you could have a male slayer?

* The slayer powers are split in two between Mel and Harth. How are they passed on to the next slayer?

4. Here are my favourite Fray things off the top of my head:

* The humourous dialogue between Mel and Urkon like...

MELAKA: You hib my whole face wib a girder

or

MELAKA: Okay. I'm supposed to fight the coming onslaught of Lurks, and I'm being taught by a sarcastic Goat-thing whose idea of training is throwing scrap-metal at me, because the actual good guys all went crazy waiting for the monsters to come back.

URKON: Yes.

MELAKA: Just Checking

or

URKON: As I said Fanatics.

MELAKA: But he set himself on Fire.

URKON: Centuries of useless, obsessive waiting makes a human...

MELAKA: HE SET HIMSELF ON FIRE

URKON: Maybe he was cold.

* I also love the indomitable aspect of Melaka's character. She get's beat up worse and more than any other female hero character I can think of, yet she keeps coming back. She's scared poopless of Icarus, yet she keeps fighting him. You match that kind of toughness with her inner softness, and she becomes one of the most interesting female characters in fiction.

* Little one-armed, rocket-mouth Loo. Ahhhhhh,

* The Artwork.

5. I'm not going discuss the ethics of downloading Fray here, but I do it, so that suggests where I stand on it.

Hey, Fellow Fray Freak here, and yes god almighty Fray rocks!
One problem!!!.. I can't get the last comic #8!! I am going nuts, I have no ending, and I was really excited to fill the gaps of what I had already read with that link nerd4hire gave, BUT the link for the last one doesn't work.. Sooooooooo aaacckkk! I still don't know the ending.. And also you said you had lost the link to the Comic reader and I happen to have an active one, so I'll post it for ya, I am pretty sure it is the same program you are talking about.
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1034322713
so I am asking a huge favor, but does anyone know where I can get the last one?? E-mail downloading, what ever, I just really want to know the end.. I have tried to get a paper copy but none of my comic shops ever carried Fray in the first place, I pay hell getting my hands on the occasional Buffy comic. Someone offered me the last one for like a hundred bucks, but I seriously can't afford that. So if anyone knows where I could download or read it PLEASE let me know.. I will be forever greatful!

Also 1. The tattoo rocks, if I were to get a tattoo it would be something like that.
2. I would vote Fray movie.. Buffy has a movie, and I think some awesome things could be done with Fray on the big screen, plus I love Mel's Hair.. I want to see them do that in real life, lol..
3. I think it goes along with the legend, there is a huge gap, and unless some big thing happens in the end to connect Mel's time with Buffy's time, then I think it doesn't confuse it really, there is just a lack of information. I think Joss purposely left that gap there so he could come back later with (maybe a Buffy spin off?) And fill it in. Joss always plans ahead, and it's safe to say he didn't start making mistakes about big things like the slayer legend. I am sure Joss has a purpos for it, and I can't wait to see what it is.
(I have been writing a fan fic of sorts, it's all new characters, but it's after buffy and before fray, and it explains the how we go from many slayers to one again.)
4. I love her hair, lol.. Also the dialog is great, some of the for mentioned bits especially. Joss's humor is definitely there.
5. I am ok with it, if it is cheap and available then I think you should buy it.. But like as for me, there is no other way I would have seen Fray, and to deny Joss's awesome work from his fans would be just cruel. Not like Joss is losing money, I would have never wanted to buy them if I hadn't see the first one, and if he made them more available he would sell more, and now that I have seen them, I want them even worse.. Sooooo with all that in mind, downloading might actually make Joss money. People see it who would have never, and then they find and buy them.
that's all from me for now..
ciao

I also can't find Fray # 8. I'd buy it if I could find it. I don't buy stuff off the internet, so that option is out. Perhaps I can order it through a comic store. I might try that.

Failing all that though, here's a spoiler for # 8, I copied somewhere (I can't remember where)

Joss Whedon's Fray #8 (of 8)
SUMMARY: In the mouth of the beast, Fray uses the scythe to cut her way to and then through the brain of the creature, preventing the gateway from being opened. After a really gross brother-sister "bonding session," Mel confronts Urkonn revealing that she knew it was he who killed Loo in order to push Mel to give her all to save the world. Using his one weakness against him, Fray gains the upper hand and impales him with the scythe.

Also...You can get a few scans of Fray # 8 pages here:

I'm trying hard not to read that untill I've read more then just the first two. I don't really have much feeling for it yet.

I like the comic, they never sold the comic book in the stores here so im downloading them and reading them.

I think Joss did a spectacular job in making this comic book and introducing the Sytche into the comic then the show. I hope they do make a sequel.

Thanks so much for the link, and wow, also the spoiler.
I am hoping to get my hands on the paperback collection of all the comics in one book. It's like 20 bucks on the net, so I am going to try to order it through a comic shop <crosses fingers>
anyways thanks again so much for the info!
Ciao

I've read them all now, I can't wait for Fray 8 to be released. Does anyone know whether there will be more comics after the 8th issue?

2. If you had a choice of seeing a new Buffy movie, or a Fray movie, which would you choose?

Honoustly, I'd rather have a Fray movie. I mean Buffy's great and all, but I don't think a Buffy movie would get into cinema's, it probably be a tv or direct to the video store movie. Not a big succes, perhaps not even released here.

Fray on the other hand, is fresh is new, and if properly done, can be easily watched by non-Buffy fans, just like any other horror?-movie. It would have a chance of actually being a hit, IF 20th Century Fox would pump enough money into it for SFX and promotion.

I didn't realize copies of Fray issues were that hard to find. I bought the entire run off of eBay about two months ago for US$34.00 (it was a "Buy It Now" sale, I don't do auctions). There were numerous sets of all 8 Fray issues on eBay at that time, and all were similarly priced.

I thought it was great. It was no Sandman (I worship Sandman!), but it was exponentially better than most monthly comics.

I live in bu-foo wisconsin so that's probably why it is hard for me to find them, lol it's hard to find anything here. And I would buy stuff on Ebay, just that I don't have credit cards, so that kinds rules out most internet purchases. I did find a comic shop about an hour from here that is reserving me the ONE copy of the Fray collection he ordered. So yay! I will have all 8 sometime in early December.

Yay! I've just won a set of the eight Fray comics in an E-bay auction. An early Christmas present from me to me 🙂 I hope these books are as good as you guys make them sound 😉. These are the first comics I've bought in about three years...

Congatulations Mr. Pointy. Lucky you.

Score on ep. 8 for you.

I'm still looking.

I just had a Fray related thought.

How would you cast a Fray, live-action movie? It would be tough.

I'll take a stab at it

MELAKA FRAY; The first actress that jumps into my head is Eliza Dushku, but she's probably too old, and let's face it, she's Faith. Wait a minute. How about Iyari Limoni (spelling?), the actress who plays Kennedy?

URKON; Don't hate me for saying this, but Arnold Swarznegger.

LOO; It would probably have to be some new face. I don't see Dakota Fanning as a one-armed, headcase, street urchin. What a plum-part for some kid though.

ICARUS; That guy who plays T'ilc in Stargate.

MELAKA'S SISTER; Jodie Foster

Harth; The guy who plays Connor in Angel.

ok, YAY! I have it I have it !!!!
I have the Fray graphic novel! Which is basically a fancy name for all 8 comics in one.
It was 20 bucks and worth every penny! I like it even more now, and I am so frickin relieved to know the whole ending. Plus it was cool to read the stuff Joss wrote about it, and Jeph Loeb's story about hating Joss cause he's so good, and how they decided to make ths comic was great. I was also very pleased to see they added a "˜sketchbook' in the back. It has Karl's prelim drawings for Fray and all the characters in it. Nice to see the character development. I'm am just so thrilled with it. I can't wait for them to do more Fray.
As for who would I cast...

MELAKA FRAY; my first choice would have to be Jessica Alba, I think she would be good. They are built similarly, and she has some the physical training from Dark Angel. or Natalie Portman, even though I think her face may be to soft. Iyari isn't to far off either. I'd rather a new actress though.

URKON;
"Don't hate me for saying this, but Arnold Swarznegger." lmao!! That's a good one.. I could almost see it. Or Andy Serkis (the guy who played Gollum, they could computer generate it)

LOO; I have no idea, like nerd4hire said, most likely a new someone.

ICARUS;
Colin Farrell (sporting the Daredevil bad guy look, it could be done)

MELAKA'S SISTER;
Gwen Paltro or Cameron Diez since I'm figuring it needs to be a Blonde who's in her 30's. I doubt either of them would do it though.

Harth;
This singer called Marcel I saw in my Rolling Stone, or Chris Carrabba from Dashboard Confessional minus all the tattoos lol...
