Any guitar players here?

I want to get my daughter a beginner's pack electric guitar for her birthday in Feb. but the absolute plethora of choices out there has me confounded. Can anyone make a couple of suggestions?
 
I can ask a friend of mine who has gone through the same thing...only his daughter got a bass. How old is she and what musical skills does she already have (total beginner or experience with other instruments)?

She's a beginner, but has been messing around with a little acoustic her G-pa got her last summer. I think it would be helpful for her to have some sort of package that includes the guitar and amp, and maybe a book or DVD about learning to play. She's very interested in it. Her brother plays the sax and I think that's kind of piqued her interest in playing an instrument a bit. THEN, my problem will be that HE'LL want to steal it from her....he's been wanting to play guitar for a while now, too, LOL!

Wicked, she'll most likely play pop rock-ey kind of stuff and maybe a little folk music. She can play parts of La Bamba on her acoustic.

Let her listen to Pink Floyd's Echoes. If she gets it you know you've got a keeper.

If she doesn't get it, I'm sure there is a slaughterhouse in your area. Shh, it'll be our little secret.
 
LOL! I promise I won't tell!

Amazingly enough, she does like Pink Floyd. I don't think she's heard Echoes, because I don't have it, but she has listened to all of the ones I do have. And she's a HUGE Queen fan. Huge. I don't have any Queen CD's anymore, she stole them all.

Mr. P, I forgot to mention that she's 11.
 
Well my fiance suggests a Yamaha Pacifica if that means anything to you 🙂

What sort of budget are we talking about here Miffed?
 
Probably no more than about $300 or so? She's a beginner, so I don't want to get too fancy on her, but I do want her to have something decent. When she grows up and gets a job, she can buy what she wants, LOL!

Yamaha Pacifica is a bostin guitar - my mate's got one and for the money, it's hard to beat it. Good enough to be gigged, but so is the next suggestion.
The other pack I'd go for, is the Fender Squire starter pack. - John Mayall uses a Squire!
Have a look at these links - the Fender has the 70s stlye headstock, which makes it look more chunky.

Give me a shout if you want any more detail, but either of these would be an ideal first guitar, which will last for ever if needed to be used that long - they're certainly good enough.
