Any horse people here?

Up to this point my involvement with horses has been pretty much limited to the times I've seen them at the track 😛
Being serious though, my parents used to take my siblings and I to dude ranches when we were little kids, but that was a long time ago. I like horses a lot, but I have to confess that I don't know that much about them. I'd like too learn more though.

haha the track is an awesome place to get involved with horses! Over here we use to be able to go on the tracks and get rides in carts, it was pretty awesome! Too bad they are closing the whole industry in Canada 🙁
Of course ranches are good places too😀

I've had several horses and enjoyed riding when I was younger. We lived near a 25000 acre reserve where my friends and I rode every weekend. I had to have my last horse put down in 1989, and it was like losing a brother. I had hoped that when we retired, my wife and I would be able to get a couple of horses and ride again, but, unfortunately, now that we have the time, there's no place to ride in our area. Civilization and real estate agents have destroyed all of the old riding trail.
I ride 🙂 I have 2 beautiful mares. One is on lease to a mate, the other is with me and I have just started lessons again and re-discovering my passion for riding after doing it on and off the last few years. I am hoping to go for a trail ride this morning actually.

In the town I used to live in there are now houses covering all of our old tracks, and where I live now there are very few trails. And soon there will be even less space to ride thanks to urban sprawl all those nice big paddocks are being packed to the brim with houses. The horse properties are getting pushed further and further out (into land not as well suited to horses). I dread to think of what it will be like in 20 years, there will be no room for horses anywhere with all the people.

It's great that you started lessons again! I've stoped taking them last year and I miss it a lot, mostly I just miss my coach lol Tell me how the trail ride was if you ended up going! I went trail riding all winter but now that the snow is melting it's to icy to go, which is too bad because the weather is finally nice!
And that's when I'm happy to live in one of the biggest country that has one of the smallest population! Thank god we'll always have nice trails, or at least for many years to come! It's so said though to see that in some places they are pushing the farms out, and buying all the land. Of course here too, the cities are expending and I can't say I'm too happy about that 🙁
I also do english😀 Been doing it for 14 years now, never ridden anything else. I really want to buy an Aussie saddle though, they are absolutely beautiful and look perfect for trails. All my friend that have one love them!
I also use to compete, I did jumpers up until I left for university, but now it's way to expensive for me to even think about. Plus my horse developed some really bad windpuffs (not that they bother her or that it's really a problem) but one of them did harden and I'm scared jumping would affect her leg long term. I just maybe a few times a year max now. I switched to training pretty heavily in dressage and I absolutely love it. My mare use to hate it a few years back when she was a hot head, now that she's calmer she seem to enjoy it just as much as me! And I also trail ride a lot!
What did you use to show in?
I did pony club when I was a teenager, along with one day events, hack shows/showing (I think you call them something different - pretty much getting pretty and riding in circles), dressage, jumping and breed shows. I havent competed in about 2 years. And havent done an ODE in about 10.
I teach disabled riders horse riding so we use stock/aussie saddles for some of them. I taught my boyfriend to ride and I tend to try and use a stock saddle for him for trails. He is confident but inexperienced. While I think he would be ok in a dressage or all purpose saddle it just gives me peace of mind to put him in a stock for the extra security. Especially because he takes out the horses from work, and they dont get to go out much and can get a bit excited about it lol. He is going to have to ride a different horse to usual today, the previous horse he was on is extremely well educated and forward so I think it might be a shock to his system getting on either the green standardbred or the lazy paintbred haha.
I was really lacking motivation to ride, and my horse is so wonderful it was such a waste so the lessons have been brilliant just to get me going again.

Oh that`s cool! We have about the same showing back ground, the only thing I didn`t do are breed shows and I never did pony clubs (we don`t have that around here). My barn is really big on showing so now since I can`t afford it I coach instead.
And it`s awesome that you teach disabled kids, I`ve always wanted to do that. I did have a few of them to coach in past year, and we always have a few of them in camps during the summer, it`s so rewarding to see them learn to ride!
haha it`s funny, I`m looking into a stock saddle partly because none of my friends will ride in my english saddle, they find it`s not secure enough. I`m scared I won`t like the stock saddle as much though since I`m so use to using my seat. It`s gonna be weird having all that extra material in between me and my horse.

Yes, as mentioned, I have a horse. He's an Arabian gelding who's becoming a grand old man - eighteen this year. Lately, I've been more his groom than anything, life as a mother of three takes time. I have to lovely young women keeping him fit, though - I just had to get him a new saddle as he's been muscling up so much!
(A short brag: While I haven't ridden lately, I did ride less than 48 hours before my youngest son decided it was time to come out.)

My mare is turning 17 this year 😀 Gotta love those old gals! It's great that you have someone riding him, those Arabians sure do have lots of energy no matter the age!
Also, I think it's great that you kept riding through your pregnancy! Maybe soon you'll have a little cowboy that will want to ride all one his own 😀
Hehe yeah I have friends who call english saddles "ejector seats". You can still use your seat in a stock saddle but it does make you feel as if you are further away from the horse and some will tend to push your legs forward too (this position is favoured by stockman). It is a lot more secure though.
My horse is looking great at the moment, I am really pleased with her progress, but this week I have barely got to ride. Work is full on this week and I worry if I ride I wont be able to get through work. So all that lovely topline will be gone by the end of the week 🙁 boo hoo. No lesson this week either as it is Anzac day on my lesson day.

Wow, first off your horse has a beautiful frame, and that scope, damm!! You also have a very nice position over that jump!
And I know how you feel, I feel like I work 3-4 months everyday just to see some muscles finally coming out, than poof one week of not riding and my horse's bum is all giggly lol I'm lucky that at least she keeps a decent topline.
And fun fact, at my barn the coaches call that leg forward position the water ski position haha oh boy does my coach ever gets mad if he sees that my leg is too far forward 😛
