I'll comment on this bit first. You obviously don't know me!
The only reason I am not getting sarcastic with my responses to you is because most of your other comments on other parts of the board I have liked/agreed with, so I don't think you're a total 'goober' (no idea what that is, but I watched an old 80's movie last night and that seemed to be a derogatory smeer 'pon someone).
Yea Joss does seem to be egotistical and I agree with you, it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of his shows. Joss himself has a very big fanbase... people will check out every show he does solely because he's behind it.
I am one of those people. Buffy was awesome. Angel was awesome. And Firefly was awesome. So my hatred of Joss' personality really wouldn't effect my viewing patterns for me to "not make me waste my time on a single episode". Afterall, he's even got the same creative team behind Dollhouse as he did on his other shows, Joss does that.
As I said, I don't mind the ego, what I mind is how he treats his fans, which I have already gone into so I won't explain again.
Also, its not just Joss, why I shan't be watching this show. You have to let that go mate. I have stated a couple of times the list of reasons, reasons I feel are pretty strong enough to not waste my time, especially when life gets back in the swing I have so precious little of it.
And I shan't be wasting Boxsets when they cost so darned much and there are already shows on my list to get.
If I had seen something, anything, that really interested me, I would be all for it, but even Eliza, whom I like, has turned me off this show, which is coming across as nothing more than a televised showreel.
VK said he felt there was "a feeling we could do no wrong", i dont think he got a direct quote to that effect and maybe thats true but i dont think so. In S4 they did do wrong lol, one of the things i really admired about Joss and the creative teams as a whole is how much they seemed to listen to fans. Im constantly hearing in commentary's and interviews about how they were checking the boards and how some things proved unpopular etc...that hardly seems like a creative team with blinders on spouting "im the king of my castle".

Thats not the case. Joss Whedon is just Joss Whedon, Buffy, Angel and Firefly are very mush a group thing.
You can love one and not the other.
That meant that I like the other shows but I am also acutely aware that its a team thing, not just one man.
He gets all the credit and glory but without the team, the shows would be different.
I see Joss a bit like Russell T Davis in that he has great ideas, but its the people around him that help hone them.
Also the VK comment. I must explain, again last night tipsy, I believe its something Joss COULD say, I don't think he'd be that stupid to say it to a cast member he didn't plan on keeping around.
As for firefly's popularity, I get that you dont like it but im guessing your not actually arguing whether or not it was popular or not... especially by comparing IMDB votes against total viewers. It was a canceled TV show so clearly it wasn't popular in its first run, I suppose i could get the DVD and Bluray sales figures for this half a season of cancelled tv but we already know they were good enough to raise the eyebrows of a movie studio. I think calling firefly popular would be an understatement.
The only figures that truly count ARE the viewing figures and the sales.
OK, Firefly did well on its sales, well enough to get a movie BUT that movie didn't do so well, in fact last time I was involved in a discussion about it, it only just managed to break even, and thats with fans on official sites urging people to go watch it numerous times and buy multiple copies to try and get a sequel.
I don't doubt that its fans love it and they bought the surprisingly cheap (within 2 weeks of it coming out, I could buy it - but didn't - at HMV for £17 which was cheap considering half a season of Lost was £40) DVD boxset.
The show was cancelled for a reason. Thats not an argument on how good or bad the show is, thats a comment on how many people watched it.
I personally think Dead Like Me was one of the best shows on TV when it was on, and that got cancelled.
But yeah, in that respect, opinions are good.
Joss was working on the comics while Buffy was still running (Fray- 2001) so I dont see how his use of comics is a desperate attempt to retain fans.
Yes, he did Fray.
There was no mention of a Buffy continuation comic until after he started to lose Hollywood - WW has been discussed.
When the Spike/Illyria TVM was suggested and Amy Acker was all like 'Yeah, looks like its going to be going ahead, everyone seems on board with Joss running this thing' then BOOM, Joss says publically that he won't be running it and it stops in the process.
Lets look at Ripper. Something Joss has 'wanted' to do for years now but whenever its getting press that suggests its going to happen, something else comes along.
Its almost as if he is dangling that carrot saying 'if you buy into this, or watch this, I will keep the idea of screen Buffyverse alive...until I finally make it as a proper big hollywood director which is what I REALLY want'.
The comics, the ones he didn't mention until his fanbase started to leave him, have likely won alot of people back, but its all showy with Joss.
I have never gotten the impression he respects the fanbase as much as he acknowledges he needs them - but he does it in a way to make you think he's the one doing you the favour.
I won't argue he isn't intelligent, it takes intelligence to manipulate so many people.
