Treated myself to Rearviewmirror yesterday, the band's Greatest Hits collection, despite already owning every single thing they have ever released, hehe. Having now listened to both cds all the way through about three times it has truly hit me just what a phenomonal group Pearl Jam are.

I mean it isn't as if this is a total revalation to me. They have been my favourite band for around a decade now, ever since i picked up Ten, their first album. Also, being a massive fan of rock generally, and the "grunge" era bands in particular, it should come as no surprise to me that i enjoyed this compilation of songs.

But i realised listening to them that every song on there still feels as fresh and new as when i first heard them. The quality of the lyrics, the talent of Stone, Jeff, Mike and the various drummers that have worked with them, and especially the strength, power and emotion of Eddie Vedder's voice, has never diminished.

I have so many bands that i absolutely adore (as my cd collection would prove to you) but only Pearl Jam could ever claim the title of my all time favourite band.

If you are a fan already then i would recommend picking up Rearviewmirror purely for the ease of having so mant great songs on two cds. If you aren't a fan yet then i would definately recommend you buy this. You don't know what you have been missing! 😉

Hell, yes!!! Saw them early last year when they toured down here and that has to be the best show I've ever been to. Though accused of selling out by other grunge acts back in the day, they have always, in my eyes, been anything but. It's all about great rock music for them. They don't make video clips or care about image and keeping record company execs happy, etc.

Eddie's voice has to be one of the best in rock music and the songwriting is sensational. From the power of the pick-you-up-and-rock-your-socks-off songs to the raw emotion of the ballads. Its all just awesome!

No, I haven't picked up Rearview Mirror yet but I've got all their CDs released between about '91 and 2000 so that'll do me for now. The best is Ten though. It doesn't get any better than Once, Alive, Even Low, Jeremy, and my favourite Black, all on one CD. Oh, wait a minute, Rearview Mirror is a best of... Hmmm...

They don't tour over here anywhere near often enough for my liking so i've only managed to catch them twice. They are beyond incredible playing live.

Totally agree about the selling out thing, although the rumours of issues between Pearl Jam and certain other bands were blown way out of proportion by the media. Most of the things that were meant to have been said were either taken out of conext or made up entirely. There is a story of Kurt Cobain actually purposely saying something about Layne Staley (the late lead singer of Alice in Chains) just to see how quickly it spread through the press grapevine that Nirvana and Alice in Chains hated each other! :happy04:

But like you said, Pearl Jam are arguably the band that could least be described as sell outs. By the time they released Vs. they had stopped making music videos altogether forcing MTV to use live footage in order to play their latest singles.

Even today they don't play the game when it comes to working the money making angles. Eddie didn't have very much at all to do with the promotion of Rearviewmirror because he saw it as the label's attempt to bleed money out of the fans unfairly. That's why the collection doesn't feature any new tracks, so that the fans won't feel obliged to buy it just for a couple of new songs. Now you only will have to get it if you really want it.

lol I hadn't heard that about Nirvana and AIC - I think Alice was my fav out of that era 🙂

But I do fondly remember the huge buzz when Pearl said they weren't going to play Black in concert anymore lol

Speaking of Black, which just happens to be one of my all time favourite Pearl Jam songs, seeing as how this is a thread about the bands Greatest Hits compilation what would be everyone else's top ten Pearl Jam tracks?

For me it would have to be, in no particular order, Black, Jeremy, State Of Love And Trust, Given To Fly, Rearviewmirror, Immortality, Release, I Am Mine, Corduroy and Long Road.

Wow I don't think I'm that advanced to have ten lol. I love Black and *waits for Pagan to smack her after she says this* I also love the cover of it on the Family Values Tour cd. 🙂

My tops would be though:

1. Better Man
2. Black
3. Jeremy (I always cry when I hear it)
4. Evenflow
5. Daughter
6. Dissident
7. Alive
8. Breath
9. State of Love and Trust
10. Go

Not going to say a thing! 😛

Actually i don't *hate* it myself, Aaron did a fair attempt at it. No way as good as Eddie but then who is?

You're top ten choices more than make up for that little indiscretion though! 😉
