Any Vegetarians Here?

I've tried to become one a few times...didn't work! Those bacon and cheese omelets were just calling to me... 🙁

I really respect all those vegetarians out there, though! 🙂

I consider myself a vegitarian. I stopped eating meat 6 years ago I think. I used to still eat fish, but I've gradually stopped that, and I now I only eat it at home,so my mum doesn't go crazy from not knowing what to cook for me next. I plan to stop eating fish when I move out (hopefully in the coming months). I also don't eat poultry or other animals and do not wear leather or fur. I have no problem with eating dairy products or eggs. Additionally, although I absolutely love to cook, I refuse to prepare meat or even use utensils that have been used to prepare meat with on other ingredients. The only exception to this rule is feeding our five dogs, although if I ever were to have my own dog I would definitely want a vegitarian diet for him/her. (And yes, I'm aware that this is a reasonably complex diet to balance well, but it can be done healthily.)

I don't know if any other veggies have ever had the same experience I had. It's happened to me a couple of times in the last few years (once every two years maybe) that after I'd eaten something I found out that it had some kind of meat (product) in it. (So far, it's always been less then a couple of hours after I had.) When this happens I ALWAYS get sick. My stomach gets really really upset and hurts and it takes a couple of days to recuperate. I'm just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else and also whether you guys think I actually get sick from the consumption of meat or that it's just a psychological reaction that I actually get sick at the thought?

It's never happened to me, I mean I've never eaten meat after I became a vegetarian (at least not as far as I know), I guess it could be a psychological thing, but I'm also pretty sure that if you haven't eaten meat for a while you would get sick if you did so.
Have you ever starting getting sick before you found out that it was meat you ate?

Not sick usually, but I usually have a gut feeling that something's wrong 😉 In one case I once took one bite out of a pizza flavoured snack and then spat it out immediately. Checked the bag and yes... bacon.

Another weird question for veggies: do you swat flies?

Actually, it's proven you get sick because your meat enzymes have either slowed or stopped working/producing, so when meat gets into your body your body freaks at the sudden change.

I kill most insect because they annoy me as they tend to bite me. Got some on my back at the moment (bites...not insects). Bleeding things.

I don't think there is anything wrong with killing insects. I am not a big fan of animals, I just don't consider them food, and it's weird to eat them. Plus the whole industry is frakked up, of course. Plus, of course, we'd be able to produce way more food if people would just stop eating a producing meat. Etc.

I think some animals are meant for food.
Other animals are meant for population control.

I do not, however, support animal cruelty in any form. I wont buy authentic leather or fur and won't buy products tested on animals (including most forms of cosmetic products).

I'm a vegetarian and have been since I was 13.. for both health and moral reasons I chose to stop eating meat (and fish) though I do consume dairy products (but only organic, and eggs I get from a farm that I know does not harm the chickens). I have no problem with people eating meat in front of me (people always seem to ask me if I'm sensitive about seeing meat in front of me), and I don't hold anything against people that eat it, it's just my choice and my preference. I'm a huge animal lover, so when I found out how the animals were being treated, at 13 I was old enough to find out all this information for myself, I just decided to quit eating meat. It does actually make me feel a whole lot healthier too 😛

I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan. I have nothing against anybody who is a vegetarian or vegan. My parents back in Kansas raise beef so every meal I've ever ate since I was little has included meat (mostly beef). Sorry but I can't imagine a meal that doesn't include meat. I hope I don't offend anyone here.

I'm the sort of vegetarian that vegetables like. I like the look of vegetables so much, I leave them growing in the garden.

Why does it seem somehow wronger to me to eat Venison than to eat Beef? I mean, sure, when it was alive, it was cuter, but the form it reaches us in isn't really recognisable... Strange.

I won't ever eat mussels again, because Jesus, after I cooked them for the first time, I felt bad for days. Not particularly cute animals, but still. I know exactly what happens when a cow is killed, and it's a lot less horrible than being boiled alive. I wish I had the nerve to go totally vegetarian, or at least had the kind of conscience that wouldn't mind eating meat at all. As it is, I'm in a kind of Catholic meat-eater limbo - I'll eat meat, and feel bad about it. And then eat some more meat.

I don't understand the concept of feeling bad about eating meat, or where the idea of "morality" comes into it. Nearly everything walking around in the wild - including the herbivores - will eat you to survive without feeling bad about it. (shrug) It's the food chain - everything eats and is eaten in turn, and even plants are living things.

Animals eat each other all the time and don't feel bad about it, that's true. But they also roll in each other's poo and can't use microwaves. We're not part of that order anymore. We're capable of recognising other animal's suffering, and if we're not completely sociopathic, we're capable of empathising with it. If we can reduce another creature's unnecessary suffering without serious penalty to our own quality of life, then don't we have a moral obligation to do so? And isn't Popcorn Chicken the best thing ever invented? Argh, conflict!

We're still animals, regardless. We may arguably have developed a higher level of emotional sophistication (I say arguably because anyone who's spent much time around animals can tell you that they also are capable of empathizing with others - and that still doesn't stop them from preying on their natural food,) but we evolved as omnivores, and I don't see any reason to make ourselves into something we're not. If people want to go veggie, or vegan, or bread-and-water, that's their business, but the rationalizations and over-the-top rhetoric from the "meat is murder" crowd gets really tiresome really quickly - not that anyone here has been saying anything like that, but that radical wing is amazingly vocal elsewhere.

If we can reduce another creature's unnecessary suffering without serious penalty to our own quality of life, then don't we have a moral obligation to do so?
The key word there being "unnecessary." I hate the commercial chicken ranches and cattle pens, but the reality is that there simply isn't enough free range left for everyone to grow their own, nor enough wildlife to hunt (and even if there were, some people are trying to prevent that.)

And isn't Popcorn Chicken the best thing ever invented? Argh, conflict!
Mm, I don't know, I'd probably be inclined to give that title to blue crab cakes (the St. Augustine variety...)
