Any writer's on the board?

So, I finally got back to writing after a few years of not touching a pen at all! So now I'm just curious, is there any other writer's on the board? Also, what genre do you write? Do you write for fun, or as a job? I'm interested in seeing what everyone is into!

For my part, I love writing fantasy. I'm currently writing my biggest project. For now I'm just doing it for fun, to kind of build my own world, but I'd definitely enjoy being published one day. On a side not, I also, for school, write a lot of scientific articles, which I'm definitely a lot better at then writing stories haha

Edit: Also sorry for the mistake in the title of the thread, it's 3 in the morning and I guess it's time for me to go to bed lol, my head doesn't seem to be functioning anymore 😛
 
The first college I attended out of high school, I joined the student newspaper pretty soon after enrolling. I started as the paper's sports editor and eventually became the editor-in-chief, before transferring to ASU. I didn't write in Arizona, but I enjoyed it when I did, so it'll probably always be something I have tumbling around in the back of my mind.

Beyond that though, I enjoy writing for recreation. I've been writing off-and-on for a few years about a superhero story told through different character perspectives, and I'm actually just starting a Game of Thrones inspired story right now, told in the same manner. Sounds kind silly, but I like to cast myself as the main character in both of them 😱.

I like preparing before I write. Right now I'm going through all the different houses and who belongs to which ones. I did the same for my superhero piece, and found it worked well. My own family is actually structured a lot like the Starks, so I'm kind of using that as a template, and having some fun with it.

I've never actually shown my fiction to anyone, now that I think about it. I just do it on Word files and like reading them back and working on them. It's a bit of escapism I suppose.
 
I have a completed novel on my C drive. And it will probably stay there.

I have an incomplete item that could probably be turned into a play. It's going to sit right beside the novel on my C drive.

I have written for a trade magazine before and found that by their guidelines, they would pay me $192 for the article. When I got the cheque in the mail, it was for $217.

I also got a writing gig from a semiconductor company to show how thier products could be used to build a music synthesizer. I got a very nice cheque for that - $2500.

I was known in the various engineering companies I worked for as the guy to write business proposals. I have a very clear, organized, fluid writing style that can be very convincing. There was one proposal I worked on for X-ray imaging systems for breast cancer research. (There was a lot of money floating around in the '90's for breast cancer research.) There were seven grants of $1 million to be given out. The previous years, there were 2200 applications for this money. The year I wrote for it, there were 3500 applications for seven grants, so only one out of 500 would be successful. We got the last of the seven grants, so I now advertise myself as a 99.8 percentile proposal writer.
 
Well, apart from me writing numerous amounts of fanfics, I've attempted some original writings once in a while. Nothing's ever really come from them, and they're largely unfinished pieces.

I also ended up writing for the school newspaper this year, and I did about four or five articles in total.
 
I love to write. I can't seem to find enough time to do it. I've only completed a few stories from beginning to end. I seem to have a lot of starts and then I jump stories. I sometimes try to go back and finish some of the older ones. I believe I have two long stories completed and a few short stories completed. All originals. It's been a while since I've written fan-fiction.
 
I love to write. It's just that real life got the best of me I guess 😉 I actually started out reading fan fictions of the X-Files and later Buffy. But I always wanted to write something on my own. So I started a few stories. I also (just like Robb Stark said it) saw it as some sort of escapism. When I started college I got enrolled in a newspaper project of the English department. I enjoyed writing articles on all kinds of subjects and bringing my personal style into it. It was a great to be able to write something other than your usual college papers. Due to work I don't seem to have much time for writing, but just recently I thought about picking up a pen again and start a new story... Funny that I'm not the only one who feels that way 😉

I love to write and tend to do it all the time ( ok sometimes I have periods of zero inspiration and no action) and few things bring me as much joy as writing. Some 10 years ago I wrote mainly fan fiction but nowadays I never do anymore because my own stories demand all of my creative attention on that front so to speak. I used to write fantasy fan fiction but when I've tried original fantasy I haven't liked it very much so I stick to drama exploration now.

Although a part of me would love to be able to make a living of my writing I doubt I will ever try to publish anything. Why? Because it's too personal, too intimate, my books tend to end up as my babies and there is so much of me in them that it is almost painful to put them in the hands of others. I wasn't even sure whether or not to post in this thread because I feel as I'm revealing something of myself that makes me feel very vulnerable. Silly perhaps but until I've developed a thicker skin my writings will be for me and my sister only I suppose :X3:
 
I enjoy writing non-fiction, essays and the like. I was never that great at fiction. I am, however, trying to finish a short story I've been working on for *years*. I majored in literature in college, and really enjoy writing about what I read...and watch.
 
I write occasionally, strictly for my own gratification and relaxation, and I have posted a few fan fiction short stories. Mostly, though, my literary efforts will never see the light of day. I did write some procedural papers, detailing the steps taken for disassembling, repairing, and reassembling equipment before I retired, though I'm sure that they are all obsolete by now.

I write stuff most days, I have done since Feb 2000 when I found I could write more than two sentences at a time.
I write all sorts of stuff: Fantasy, Historical, Comedy, Sci-Fi, Supernatural and Mild Horror.
Virtually all of the fan fics I've written have been stories that needed that certain something, so I altered those stories to suit the fan fic and hoped I get that bit of inspiration to finish the original story. That sort of explains the 55 plus fan fics here. Plus, needless to say I've a lot of stories that arem't finished and some I'd like to finish.
At present I'm working on two epic poems, thankfully neither are rhyming ones.
I have 2 stories at the planning and research stage, one is titled The British Empire: circa 5186 BC.
The other is currently titled Beyond the Garden Gate, sections of the bible will be used to give the story direction. It will be fantasy with points of historical events put into the story to give it life.

To date I've had 2 books published.

I entirely agree with this post. I'm the same with my stories, and how they are so personal and real to me, that I end up not wanting to share them. The vulnerability of it is truly and amazing, and at the same time a very scary thing. I admire authors that have the guts to share their books with the entire world. To me, that's like entirely exposing who you are. I've only ever shared my biggest story with one person, and she absolutely loved it, but even then, her trying to give me advice and ideas for the book made me not want to share it at all. I don't actually mind the criticism, but because it's my world, I don't want anyone having any say into what I write. Like you said, I guess my books just end up being like my babies and I don't want anyone to change anything about them.

Now on another note, I'm glad there are so many writers on the board!!

I've also recently started getting back into writing original fiction after not writing any for four years. I finished a couple of short stories so far this year. I decided to publish the first on my deviantART site (http://kanazaka.deviantart.com, for those who are interested), and have submitted the second to an online literary journal (with more to follow later this summer and into the fall, when most of the journals have their reading periods). I have mostly written a pretty even mix of general literary fiction and science fiction, although I am planning on writing a crime novel this year and a fantasy novel next year. I have also written quite a lot of fan fiction. Also, I have written science articles for a Chicago-based non-profit called Genewise, as well as many essays and research papers in college. That's pretty much my bibliography 🙂.

P.S. A couple of my short stories on deviantART are marked as "Mature Content", so you'll have to be a member to read them.

I'm exactly the same as you-except for the school newspaper.

I love writing. Its an escapism for me. If I've had had a bad day or if I'm feeling down, I just start writing whatever comes to mind.

I also write fan fiction and original stories, but like Evil Angelus 95, nothing's really come from them. I'd love to be a publish writer one day though.
 
I'm a wannabe script writer. Spent my late teens/early twenties trying to write a sitcom. Managed two complete scripts and lots of unfinished ones (sitcoms in UK are usually written by one or two people rather than as a team). Anyway I eventually abandoned it after spending far too much time on it.

Then stopped writing for a couple of years. Recently restarted and have been trying my hand at short films. Written a couple but haven't sent them out to anyone. Now I'm attempting a longer script which might work well as a TV one-off about an obsessive fan. But don't worry it's not autobiographical... much.
 
I am an aspiring author who needs to learn to finish what I start writing! XP
I have a novel begun which a friend of an Uncle is waiting for me to finish as he will help me get published. My forte is dark, mature, intense, and romantic and I have a thing for graphic detail. My first novel is about the supernatural, it involves the past of Salem witches and that is all I will say.

One reason I have not worked on it is that I am also into fanfiction, I have several of those from Twilight and Being Human US that also need finishing as well as a pending Being Human idea. My mind can be cruel and leave me to work with all these ideas at once.
 
I write screenplays! Mostly dark, emotional stuff, whether it's about ex-cops or teenagers in high school! Currently it's just a hobby, but I'd like to be able to write as a living! 🙂
 
I looove writing, have ever since I was old enough to, have always been the lit geek, school newspaper member and the one most of my friends turned to (and still do) to edit their work. Anyway to the point yeah I write, not professionally though, I write poetry semi-regularly and its not half bad (I hope) I also do write novels but I have kind of a short attention span so I have about 10 quarter finished novels scattered around the house, most teen geared.

I like writing screenplays, scripts for film and TV. However having one made into a film has a major drawback. The problem is finding a producer who knows how to reply to an e-mail.
I hope the film industry is better where you are, compared to here.

Yeah it's a tough business alright... I guess I'm sorta lucky since I have a relative whose a director (small time) and wants to start making feature length movies. We've talked a lot about ideas and stuff so I hope that will be a good entrance. But yeah, it's all about contacts really.

I write in English, it feel more natural to me, and my relative is also English-speaking so it makes the most sense. Good luck to you though! There are a lot of amazing scripts that never get made, and instead they pour millions on movies like Battleship and shit...


Writers, what time of the day do you prefer to write? How do you get into the mood? Do you have any tips or are you like me, just writing whenever you feel like it?

I tend to get most of my ideas when I'm trying to sleep ^^

I'm the same, I always prefer writing when I'm going to bed, which is usually at 1-3am. I definitely have more inspiration at night. I tend to just wait until I'm in the mood without actually forcing the mood, so I do write very slow and only when I feel like it. Sometimes I'll go months without writing and then work on something day and night for a few weeks.

I'm also like you, mostly I write in English, which is weird because I'm very, very French.
