So I noticed that in season 3 when Anya goes back to the school before graduation she tries to get Xander to go with her, right? She says something like "my car's out front."

Now...in season 5 when she and Willow are driving Anya clearly says she wouldn't know if she could drive until she tried it....leading us to assume it was her first time behind the wheel.

Just another observation from an over-analytical fan 😛

Love such viewers like you ! realy intersting!
Ya I noticed that aswell. While I didnt mind it that much, it was just the writers dumbing down Anya (if you really look at the charecter you will see she becomes more naive and dumb each season)

That's actually kind of true...how unfair....
It's very possible she had a driver! Maybe D'Hoffryn gave her a generous severance check...

😀

Very true. Then of course, there's more suggestion and reinforcement that Anya cannot drive in "Restless" when she's "gesturing" wildly to drive the ice cream truck in Xanders dream 🙂

Just cause she had a car does not mean she knows how to drive it. She could have driven just as poorly.

^ Except that in "Triangle", she implies that it's her first time driving. Discovering what each pedal does, etc. And she tells Willow, "Well, I couldn't know if I could drive until I tried it, could I?"

I have a feeling there's a lot of inconsistencies regarding Anya. Like someone said above (too lazy to scroll 😛), they were dumbing her down and kind of made her a filler for Cordelia when she wasn't that much like Cordy when we first met Anya.

Sorry if I'm going off topic but there's also this thing with Anya and money. I think we've seen her apartment briefly in exactly one episode, somewhere in S4. I can't check right now. But it seems to me she never had a job before the Magic Box so how could she afford clothes, food and an apartment?

On the other hand, during "His Mrs" we hear her sing "I'm good with math" while in S3 when she's pleading with D'Hoffryn to get her back into the vengeance business she says "And now I'm stuck at Sunnydale High. And I'm flunking math". But she held the job at the Magic Box for some time and we've seen how she is with money maybe she just improved. So, no dumbing down at least in that department.

I agree, I think she came in to fill Cordy's role, but she wasn't that different from Cordy. They weren't especially similar, but she did fit in with Cordy's clique right away, and they were what 5 girls out of an entire school? 5/1000+ is pretty close in the scheme of things.

Angel too. Joss never made any sense of finances, he only addressed it in a plot device twice.

That's not really an inconsistency. Those of us who have made it passed high school should know that there's a good chance she was "flunking" Geometry, and you can be great at math (especially accounting, which was Anya's strong point) and have no skill for Geometry.

Being a vengeance demon was her JOB. I always assumed she got paid a hefty amount, and her finances were just beginning to dry up before she got the job at the Magic Shop.

It's possible she was flunking math, without being bad at math. I highly doubt a 1,000-year-old recently-ex demon was very concerned with doing her homework, studying, and getting good grades. So just because she was failing the class, doesn't mean she couldn't have gotten a better grade if she tried.

My thoughts exactly on the math point...I nearly failed a lot of classes I even though I understood the content quite well out of sheer boredom.
I do not think D'hoffryn was paying her money somehow for vengeance. Concerning these inconsistancies remember certain monks doing rewrite of the history. Who knows what they did either on purpose or accidentally. Sounds a lot like a Wizard did it I know.

I definitely agree that they dumbed Anya down quite a bit as the show progressed and that always bothered me. It did give us some hilarious moments in the history of the show (Shiver Me Timbers, anyone? (sw) ), but yeah, there were some major inconsistencies over the years.
I had never thought about the driving thing. I guess I never noticed that she said "My car's out front" before... Good observation!

I think it's mostly that in Anya's first few appearances she wasn't intended to have anything more than a few episodes.

They had to change her around a bit to make her interesting as a recurring character and I think they succeeded. : D
