Anya hair changes -- character or actress?

Does anyone know if the constant hair changes were part of Anya character or actress personality?

The same question be asked about Oz, and even Buffy to a certain extent. Probably it was a combination of both on the ladies' part. With Oz (and I know that wasn't the original question, but still...) it was probably nothing any more than you getting up in the morning and deciding what color shirt to wear: just a whim of the moment.

In the commentary for "Bargaining, Part 1," someone (either Marti Noxon or Jane Espenson, I can't remember which) comments that Emma Caulfield insisted on dying her hair the exact color that Sarah Michelle Gellar's was and cutting it very similarly, too. She complained that from behind, the actresses were very easy to mistake for each other, and that it would have been worse if SMG hadn't come back that season with more of a honey tone to her hair. So then, at least, it was actress' choice.

yep they were pissed that she had buffy hair.... even later on in the show she gets short curly blonde hair... she has slayer envy me thinks. I listened to that commentary too, before they mentioned it, i had no problem with her hair.

I'm not so sure about Anya (EC) but as far as Buffy and Willow, I think the writers had something specific in mind as to the "growing up" effect on each. Esp. Willow. In S-1 and S-2, she was very "girly" in her hairstyle. Very "teenagery". And the more the Willow character grew & matured, so did her hair.

Same with Buffy. Very specific in S-6, when she had her hair cut - or rather, she CUT her own hair, after Spike said how much he loved her "golden locks" - of course, I don't think that was really SMG's hair... it was a wig... I think... or was it? If it was really her real hair, then it sure did grow FAST, because it was much longer in S-7.

Then again, never underestimate Hollywood & their hair extentions! 😀

In S7 I always wondered how Anya got the time to go to the hairdressers, what with the impending apocalypse and all. And who the hell is sticking around in Sunnydale to cut hair anyway? :lol2:

As far as I remember, Buffys haircut in S6 was the only cut that was made for the charecter. All other hair changes were the actress. S2, SMG cut her hair for I know what you did last summer. Seth Green always had a different hair color same with Emma. I guess they just loved to change their hair. And I remember them making Charisma take the blonde out of her hair in S2 of Buffy since there was only one blonde allowed on the show. But the hair changes went with the charecters personalities.

Yeah, I think Emma and Seth just have hair changing issues. Some people do. But, Anya's really bugs me sometimes. My poor kids can't even recognize her from disk to disk!

SMG cut her hair for I know what you did last summer.

I'm pretty sure I heard or read somewhere that Joss said that they changed her hair to be blonder because originally they wanted Buffy to look earthy but then they realised that they wanted her to look more mall girl. So I think that change was character based.

the commentaries pretty much answer the question. the actresses/actors seem to have most of the power in how their hair looks.

joss even commented on xanders hair in season 1. he said something like, "ah look at nicks hair....thats his season 1 hair."
