Anyone else not like Spike??

By himself, Spike is an okay character. However comparing him to others is what drags him down. Especially when we compare him to his rival (and friend) Angel.

Angel got his soul way before meeting Buffy--not because of her. Yeah, I know it was a curse, but a soul counts as a soul no matter how you get it. Spike only got a soul to try to impress Buffy He figures "she liked one vamp with a soul, so I'll try it"

Spike started off his appearances by trying to kill Buffy and Angel didn't. Angel just helped out by telling Buffy cryptic language about the harvest and fork guy.

What the hell? Angel only started helping people because he wanted to bang Buffy.

The point is that (for me) Spike only did what he did because of Buffy. He would not have gotten his soul back if he never met her. Everything he did was because of her and not a desire to be better.

Not true. Of course he had a desire to be better.

Spike is a very interesting character to me. but that's not the (only) reason i love him. although he's a vampire, he very human and he's special. for a vampire without a soul (then) he was very special. he's so different than the characters we usually see on television and there's a reason why he's the most popular character on BtVS (and maybe on Angel). sometimes i can't understand those who don't like him. but i figure, most of those people are B/A shippers, so they hate spike for taking Buffy away from Angel. which i think it's not true. but i don't know for sure of course, it's just a thought. spike haters: why do you really hate spike so much?

Also, Andew was in love with him (he's in love with every guy in the series, but especially spike and warren).

I love evil spike, i hate spuffy. It's one of those things that makes me want to ask joss whedon, 'wtf?'

I didn't mind chipped spike till he decided he loved buffy

The only season that I don't like Spike is season six. He is one of my favourite characters on the show. I especially liked him in the final season. He was just so sweet and protective of Buffy, and was with her whatever choices she made. Also he sacrificed himself at the end of Chosen to save the world. He was an amazing guy. He was also hilarious, lol. I love a character that can make me laugh.

My main problem with Spike is that the writers wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Spike was upgraded to hero-level status, but while more or less retaining the attitude and persona of a highly violent, amoral badass. If you want to have Spike change, he's gonna have to, I dunno, actually change. Wesley was no longer a clumsy, nerdy fool after getting his throat slit for a reason: when a person experiences such major life changes, it effects who they are.

Of course, I have reasons for (occasionally) disliking Spike aside from (IMO) sloppy writing. His overwhelming devotion to Buffy (even when she was making decisions that were, IMO, highly questionable), combined with his earlier overwhelming devotion to Drusilla, as well as all of his more generalized Mommy/Slayer/women issues make me think that his heart is in the wrong place most of the time. (And, yes, that means that I don't think Spike is all that interested in doing good for the sake of doing good. He seems much more interested in either doing what Buffy wants, doing what Dru wants, and/or pissing Angel off.)

Also, concerning a possible spin-off: I'd watch it, probably, but I can't really imagine how it'd work. Whedon's shows usually have an emphasis on family units, and the lack of a family unit is my main problem with a Spike series. When he's not obsessing over some girl, or trying to rebel against a annoying/threatening alpha male like Angel(us), Spike's more of a lone wolf type. I can't see him developing a family. And, without a strong family unit, it just wouldn't be what I want/need from Whedon, IMO.
