Anyone ever gotten a root canal done?

Ok i just came back from the dentist cause i have this cavity that has gotten bad and we were just gonna get it pulled but he said i had a good tooth formation meaning my teeth were in good shape except for the few cavitys i do have and said i didn't wanna get it pulled at 15 that he could save it by doing a root canal and i'm not good with pain so i'm like freakin out by what he explained he'd be doing tomorrow and i know its gonna hurt but i dont know how bad so i figured i'd come and ask the BB members who have had this stuff done on a scale of 1-10 how bad did it hurt and what do they do to prep you for it..

Mrs P has had something like this done and didn't have much of a problem with it (then again, she's got a pretty high pain threshold compared to me - childbirth and all that😉 Mr P however is a definite wuss when it comes to any medical treatment).
Obviously, there is some discomfort, but provided your dentist anaesthetises you correctly you shouldn't suffer too badly.
I've just asked Mrs P and she says it wasn't painful but it does take a long time (comparatively) and it's uncomfortable rather than anything else.

The main think that hurts is the shots to numb the area...the actual procedure isn't bad at all...afterwards it'll be sore though...but don't worry to much....it won't be bad...

I had my two front teeth knocked loose a few years back (fist fights against seven guys when you're all by your lonesome tend to have nasty side effects like that). The nerves ended up getting damaged by that and I had to have both root canalled at the same time.

The procedure isn't something I'd recommend to a friend but it isn't all that bad. No real pain during it (assuming your dentist is competent) and no real pain afterwards either (since the teeth are essentially dead, what with the nerves having been drilled out, there isn't really any way they could hurt).

The real downside is that having it done is supposed to weaken your teeth. I know a few folks who've had the procedure done and later have had their teeth crack or chip when biting into things. I personally haven't had that happen, but apparently it can.
