Does anyone have TiVo? I'm trying to decide whether to get it or not, so I'd be interested in anyone's comments on it. I mainly want it so I can tape shows and then transfer them to video tape without the commercials.

I have TiVo and it's really nice to be able to fast forward commercials. Also, the quality is a lot better than recording something with VHS. I would definitely reccomend it. It's a lot more reliable than the VCR which is likely to screw something up that you want recorded. It's also very handy because you can get a season pass to a certain program (such as Buffy) and it will automatically record every episode. 🙂
 
Yeah, I've wanted this forever, but doesn't TiVo cost like 300 bucks?
 
From what I've read, you buy the player, which is $200-350 depending on how much memory you want it to have.

Then you can either pay I think it's $20 a month to have the on screen program guide or you can pay a one time fee of $250.

QOB - I can transfer what I record to videotape, right?
 
You should be able to tape it while you watch it AND with no commercials!!

I just bought it a couple of hours from Best Buy. I should be receiving it within 2 days. I cannot wait !!!
 
TiVo is the best, yes you can easily transfer from TIVO to videotape but there will be picture degredation, as TIVO saves your shows and movies on an internal harddrive in digital format so when you transfer it to videotape you are going back to analog. I bought the unit and the lifetime pass, instead of the annoying monthly subscription, I have it recording Charmed and Buffy, both shows air twice daily on cable so I catch up on reruns.
 
Currently I tape the shows and edit out the commercials while I watch it (assuming I'm home at the time). But occasionally I cut off a line here or there lol.

Is the quality worse after transferring to a videotape than it would have been if I'd just recorded it on the videotape in the first place?
 
on loveline...adam corrolla always gets angry at tivo...it automatically records soaps for him...

no, it will be the same as if you recorded it originally to a vcr.
 
I usually say I have TiVo, but that's just for easier reference. I have a DVR (digital video recorder) offered by my cable company. It's from Scientific-Atlanta, and has more a lot more recording time and features (plus easier programming) than the TiVo box I had for a couple years.

The best thing? I only pay about $10/month for it! If you're cable provider doesn't offer it yet, ask for it! There's an online demo of the box at http://www.scientificatlanta.com/
