I'm having a dilemma. I'm trying to watch a movie on my PC (it's 77 mins long) but I can watch it. The sound is fine but the picture gets stuck and moves once every 5 mins. It's becasue of my bad frame rate and I have tried to increase it but it isn't much better. It's says I need more processor power. Is their anyway I can give it more power without having to buy a whole new processor?

yeah...you can like put your processor on overdrive...there's places on the web to show you how....but the catch is you risk over heating your comp and falking it for good...

as an A+ certified tech I can tell you that "overclocking your processor is extremly dangerous and should never be done"

now that I go that over with, short story absolutly you can overclock, but you need to get into the BIOS of your machine and manually change your processor setttings. This requires going in and messing around with the inner workings of your machine. and depending upon your BIOS you may not even be allowed to overclock.

if you dont know anything about computers then I would just think about getting a new machine.

do you have a CDRW? if so burn your movie onto a cd and make it a VCD, it may or may not work on your dvd but its worth a shot and certainly a cheaper and far less of a hassle then overclocking or buying a new pc.

I don't have a CDRW but I'm looking into buying one. So I just burn it onto a disk and then put it into my DVD player and it should work? How much are CDRW?

Ok I went to Dixons and I'm getting a MultiSpin 4x DVD + Writer. Now this will let me copy audio and video files from Kazaa onto a disk?

don't you need a dvd burner to burn discs that'll play on your dvd player...

Someone on another thread (I forget where) was telling me there's a way to send a movie from your hard drive to your VCR.

Is that true? If so, how would you do that?

Ok here is the on I'm getting www.nec.co.uk/ND-1300A.pdf . I don't know anything about PC's but the man in Dixons said I could copy songs and videos using this. Can someone who knows "computer talk" read this and tell me if I can use this to copy films onto a disk and watch them on my DVD player? Can I copy audio and video files downloaded off Kazaa onto a disk?

If you have a CD Burner (also known as CD Writer, CDRW or whatever) you can burn movies in the MPG format (they have file names like movie.mpg, or movie.mpeg - probably the most common movie file format these days) to a CD as a VCD. A number of programs will do this, including Nero Burning Rom, and Adaptec EZ CD Creator (which doesn't do as good a job IMO). The important word to remember is 'VCD', you have to burn it in that format. Most (but not all) DVD players can read VCD's, (VCD stands for Video CD).

On the common person's PC, a great deal of memory and processing power is taken up by a ton of useless little programs that are always running and eating into your available resources. One way to deal with these, if you are running WinXP or Win2k, is to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and try to kill as many processes as possible. WinXP will take you to the right place to do this when you hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, but in Win2k you will have to select 'Task Manager' after hitting Ctrl-alt-del. Don't try this in Win95 or 98, as You can easily kill the wrong process, forcing you to reboot.

WinXP/Win2k won't let you kill the really important stuff, so not to worry. Just highlight every item line by line and click 'End Process'. Some will deactivate, and some will give you an error (which is good), as they are protected processes needed to run your system, and it won't allow you to deactivate them. Just make sure not to try and deactivate 'explorer' as it will let you, and this will leave you without a desktop until you reboot. Don't be afraid though - you can't do anything here that you can't fix with a simple reboot. Doing this stuff will free up a remarkable amount of processing power on most people's PC's.

Also, you should take a look at your system tray (that area on your taskbar -often next to the clock - that contains all the little icons) Try and right-click/exit on every one of those Icons that you can to free up processing power.

In Win2k and XP, unfortunately, a large number of useless (to most people) tasks run by default as 'services'. They can be deactivated, but a wrong move can create a few problems, so I won't go into it at this moment.

Also there are free and easy programs that will help you get the most juice out of your machine. Here's a few I would recommend.

Spybot s&d: If you have Kazaa, you probably have at least some spyware. This will suck resources. Spyware can be removed pretty much safely with Spybot s&d. There's a problem though. If you clean the spyware out of Kazaa it might not work. You'll have to download a spyware-free version here:

Cacheman: Outertech's memory management program. Improves the memory management of every version of Windows and dramatically improves computer performance.

Startman: PCForrest's StartMan startup manager. StartMan displays each group of startups separately and permits the user to delete non-essential items as well as temporarily disabling the essentials. Also allows you to make a log of what you have starting up.

Startup list: will give descriptions and recommendations of programs that can, or should not be removed from Windows Startup.

There are links to download all of these free programs here:

Also, a guy I knew was having problems with system interference from Windows Messenger spam draining power from his machine. If you are running 2000 or up, have an always-on connection, and have been getting pop-up spam messages from Windows Messenger, this might be your problem. You can fix this by downloading the program Shoot the Messenger here

So will my MultiSpin put movies on a disk so my DVD player can read them? It has CDRW and DVDRW. Will it do it on it's own or do I have to buy something like Nero Burning Rom?

Ok, If you are getting a Dvd Writer, then you should inquire as to whether or not it comes with software that will allow you to 'burn' DvD's. 9 times out of ten it will, but there are no guarantees.

first off you got tons of really good info here so far, but open up your DVD manual and make sure that you can play VCD (video cd's) it will be pointless to burn a VCD if you cant play it in your DVD player. I would do that first, than worry about which burner and which software you want to get. I use Nero 5 as I find it the best to burn VCD's.
