Anyone know Elvish?

Hi there...

This is going to sound very geeky... But does anyone know how to speak/write in Elvish from The Lord Of The Rings?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but i want a tattoo and after trying to reserch a phrase i want i cannot find a good translater on the net...

So if you do and you know how to translate, how do you write this:

Let No Foot Mark Your Ground
Let No Hand Hold You Down​

I wish... It looks so beautiful, even the Black Speech. I think you might be better looking for a diehard LotR book forum, there might be a member on there who could help you out. It'd be easy enough I suppose to look up the words and transcribe, but the grammar would be all wonky. On top of that, you have to know if you want it in Quenya or Sindarin.

Helge Fauskanger and David Salo (David was one of the consultants on the movies) are the most renown for their study of Elvish.

I would suggest doing the translation first (Quenya? Sindarin?) then looking at how to write it in the appropriate tengwar for your tattoo.

Regarless of how "geeky" it may be elvish is a beautiful language. I unfortunately do not know how to speak it but I love LOTR and it is delightful to listen to.

ok so i've not watched lord of the rings before (i've fell sleep everytime i've tried to for one reason or another) but i do own an elvish love ring as i loved the lettering on it when i saw it.

i dont no how to write or speak elvish but remember coming across a site a while back claiming to show you how to write your name in elvish in 10 minutes. this site shows u a basic elvish alphabet (however i do not no if it's correct or what you'd be looking for as i'm no expert on the matter by any means). i just member it having an alphabet on there and teaching you how to put the letters together to make your name so i'm persuming this would work for any form of writting let alone just a name.

That's merely a simple cypher substitute. It might work crudely enough for names, but Elvish in the Lord of the Rings and Tolkien's other works is a surprisingly full and functioning language. (Two, actually, with multiple dialects and perversions). Using that site would be like taking a sentence and spelling it in Cryllic letters. It would look Russian, but it would read as nonsese. It was a nice thought though, and thanks for posting the link. Although, I'm just wondering how long someone's name would have to be to take ten minutes to write it, even using Quenyan characters!

Ok, it would seem, if you're desperate, you can send the guy who made the site at the other end of that link $30 dollars to do a "translation" for you. Thing is, it's not a translation, it's a transliteration, and he's already explained how to do that! That gave me a chuckle!

There is no other solution available.
FWIW there is an Elvish language course you can take on Quenya.
Not so much on Sindarin, but it would be possible with additional study.

As a lapsed Tolkien scholar I can attest this is your best option.

There are fonts available as well so that once it is translated you can then utilize the lettering in a photoeditor for your personal arrangement to stylize your tattoo.
Personally, I am fond of Rumil's Sarati as it can be written in various methods (left to right, right to left or even top to bottom) and still be "correct".

My friend told me you should check it out for acuaracy as the grammar may be off, but it is a word for word translation and sentence structure to the best of her knowledge (It's not just a cypher).

She's pretty carefull and caring, she wanted to know where the saying came from so she could have it in correct context!

She did her best. Shes a great friend and I trust her. If anything is wrong I guarantee you its not on purpose. (she's a smart one, so I bet your all good with it as is, though.)

Relic, I was wondering if you could ask your friend a question for me. I've got my name down fine (it looks so much better in Quenya than English!), but I've now been trying to render my Username in the language. I have a two part question for her, if she's got the time (or inclination!) to answer a random Buffy fan!

1. Five by Five. I believe that it should read "lempà« ló lempà«". That's what I worked out by myself from Superstar's link. However, even in English, grammar isn't my strong point so it's probably incorrect. Does she know what it would be (in english characters)? Obviously, it is meant in the sense and context that Faith uses it (two readings of 5 out of 5 on a meter).

2. That "Write your name in Tengwar" site seems a little dubious to me. After looking again at the Appenicies of LotR, it would seem that it's a little more complicated than that even to transliterate. Anyway, the thing I'm trying to ask is that I don't know how to transliterate the ó and à« characters. Can she help with that?

Since she was the one that responded to my question, and I trust her, I didn't ask her what she uses as a source. Next time we talk I'll ask what she uses, that might help us all in the future!.

I'm elvish illiterate, I just had a friend in need, and some friends in the know. I'm sorry I can't help you more myself, but being the middle man for help is still nice, though not always expediate.

I can't guarantee a fast response; but some friends (including her) and I are writing a fanfic/RP together (hopefully) so I will be in touch with her.
