Anyone know Elvish?

Hannahs a professor, like you B.B. She is way smart, and loves to help people. She had to work at that translation though. Elvish ain't her native tongue. 🙂

To learn a language just takes time and dedication, there really is no such thing as a pretend language, just unrecognized ones....or maybe they are all pretend and we are just the imaginings of an oger sleeping off a hangover.

DunDunDah!!!!!!!
😉

I meant absolutely no insult to any of the Elvish languages or Tolkien. The man was a genius. I'm just jealous cause I'm struggling with German. 🙂

hey, none taken sister. 🙂

'Imaginary' languages like klingon, Elvish, daedric, theives kant, and Pig latin are often more difficult to learn than actual languages as they don't often have a common language ancestor/influence, and are usually of cypheric nature with sounds attached to it.

The people who amaze me are the folks who actually speak it, I haven't saw that done with Elvish, but I did see a clip once of these two guys at a convention speaking klingon! I can't even imagine the time and dedication that would take!

Don't feel bad about struggeling with German. Language takes time, I'm still having mucho problems with english and I've been speaking it for alittle over 30 years now. 🙂

Well, the Lord of the Rings does give instruction on pronunciation of consonants and vowels.
Learning the vocabulary is another matter. It really isn't that difficult to learn Elvish.
The only problem it has is a limited vocabulary.

Quenya is structurally similar to Finnish and Sindarin is similar to Welsh.
So if you understand either of those real world languages you have a head start.
Tolkien was a professor of languages.

To make things even easier for you:
The end-papers of Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion are written in tengwar but use English as the base instead of actual Elvish words.
Yes, it can and has been translated. Both Elven languages are phonetic in spelling when utilizing English. This is important.
Since this approach would also be technically correct as this is how it is presented in literature it may make things easier for you if you did not wish to be completely correct in translation.

Interesting. I didn't know that. So, do you mean that a simple transliteration a la the link above is (somewhat) valid? I'm still interested in a proper translation though, cause I just know it would bug me if I knew it wasn't right.

Hello 🙂

Since Relic (so many names, SFWAM!) came and asked for help over at the other forums I just had to come and see what was going on here 🙂 It took me a while to find you guys, as he gave no clue other than "the buffy forums"!

Anyhoo, as I posted there, I love the whole language thing, especially if it involves a new alphabet, so I jumped on Tolkien's as soon as I heard about them!

It's been a few years since I studied this, but I'm pretty sure my transliteration (i.e. from Roman alphabet into Elvish) is okay, even if my handwriting is a bit shaky. As far as translating from English language into Elvish (Quenya or Sindarin) goes, I'm really not so sure. I would have to do quite a bit of looking-up in my old notebooks to be sure of anything complex like grammar...

So, to summarise: Hello! How can I be of assistance? 😀

[edit]
And thanks, Relic, you've been more than complimentary :blushy:

Karma, even if you're not going to stick around for long! (It's a good thing!)

Yes, technically.
English as base translation was also carried over into each of the individual volume end papers and their translations of the History of Middle Earth series as well.
As stated, it is phonetic. I would suggest as a short exercise to translate a few lines yourself to see exactly what I mean.
It is not difficult to do.
Elvish translation to tengwar is going full-tilt boogie and the "most correct". It all depends on your level of fandom.

Five by five: the tranliteration should be fairly simple. The "à«" and "ó" are only put there in the English transliteration to help us to know how to pronounce the words, they do not actually occur in Elvish 🙂

Argh, I'm trying to post the picture but it won't let me as I've not got 15 posts 🙁

Here is the link, you'll have to copy it into your address bar and remove the spaces, I'm afraid that's the best I can do 🙁

Thank you! That's how I thought it went, but I wasn't anywhere near sure! You're a gem!

🙂

Does that look okay? I find "L" an unfortunate letter, as it kind of breaks the flow of the other letters. Just my personal feeling!

With regards to what it means, it is a literal translation of "five by five", as far as I can tell. If you're looking for a meaning more like "five out of five", then that would be slightly different. I'm afraid I'm not 100% certain of how its intended to be read.

Hi everyone...
I apologise firstly for not being on here and responding in such a long time since i posted. I have had a very busy week filming for a Promotional video i am making for a charity and so pretty much all my time has been spent on that and very little else.

I want to thank everyone who has helped on here... I got the picture and it looks amazing! I am soooooo happy with it and i cannot wait to get it done. Once i have i will post a photo if i learn how and maybe with some assistance from the great Five by Five... who has been my support technically ince i started on here. ha ha.

I think anyone who can learn it is amazing, because although it is a 'made-up' language it is totally beautiful and sounds so lovely that i would learn it if i could, but i had a hard enough time learning French and so that kind of makes me think learning Elvish would be a little out of my zone.

Again thankyou so much... Only on the internet can you find people who could know how to speak Elvish, and better more write it and post a picture for you so you know what it looks like.... Which i think is so kind of you.

And for anyone who wanted to know where the phrase was from, it is taken from a song by an artist called Patrick Wolf, who for anyone who has read my posts and things before will have heard me mention. That line means so much to me and i love it, but i didnt want it in a normal way because it would be boring, and so i thought how i could make it more interesting and i thought latin but then because i am a movie geek and i love LOTR and Tolkien i thought Elvish would be better and would look beautiful and less 'tacky'.

Ha ha, i know how to ramble!

Thanks again and Hugs and puppies to you all!

John

Thanks, Five By Five is what I was wanting - it actually comes from a military phrase meaning Five out of Five by Five out of Five, just to be awkward! But I'm pretty sure lempà« ló lempà« is what I was looking for. Oh, and I get what you mean about the "l" tengwa, it is a little awkward. Out of interest, do the other Tengwar rise above the baseline, or fall below? Because, if the baseline is along the top, I've found a way of rendering it quite nicely.

Hmmm, it's actually a mixture. Your phrase has letters similar to m which sit on the line and p which hangs below the line. The L tengwar is taller than the others by a little bit and hangs below the line.

I guess it would have been easier if I'd just written it on lined paper!

Yea! Hannah's here!

Your like Sherlock Holmes or something, finding this sight! I was about to jump over to PES and leave you a link when you said you might stop by. I'm very glad your here.

Yes i have gone by a few names....I ditched S.F.W.A.M. because it could be interpreted as Single female wants a man, plus that name had some very bad memories atached to it, but I don't need to explain that to you.( I think you'll always think of me as that though 🙂 ) Border Warden was/is nice, as it was ment to be a comparison to Rangers (D&D style.. not real world.) but people kept asking if I had ever been in on Texas border patroling.

I've always felt like a Relic, so that my current username; it seems to fit me well enough.

I'm so glad your here, truely a mark of a good friend 😉 and thanks for all your help.

While your around you should check out this places version of 'the tavern' We have some pretty good writers around here and the some of the styling is unlike what I'm familiar with....kinda like a screenplay in some of the RP's.

Keep the translation requests coming!
