Alright, here I have some evidence that Firefly appeals to folks beyond the buffy-boards and fanboy sites. It's that generations site I hover around:

Ignore if you're sick of this, but the theory is that the populations of societies can be broken down into a four part generational cycle that continually repeats itself over time. In the US:
GI generation: the Hero archetype, also called Civics
Silent generation: the Artist archetype, also called Adaptives
Baby Boomers: the Prophet archetype, also called Idealists
GenerationX: the Nomad archetype, also called Reactives
Millenial generation: the next Hero/Civic generation, supposedly
"”Basically, they're saying that Mal and the crew mostly fit the Nomad archetype, like Han Solo, Aragorn, Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins"”rogues wandering around aimlessly in the time between major historical events. So, Mal, Zoe, Jayne are Nomads (like genX). Simon, River, Kaylee are probably Hero/Civics (like millenials).
Their analysis made me think of something else: I get incredibly bored with imaginary politics. Sci-fi politics, Star Wars politics. I'm much more interested in the relationships of the Serenity crewmates than the finer points of galactic conflict, war. But, it's interesting to see how they geekishly, wonkishly try to analize the Unification War.
