Anyone want to see the new Tarzan Movie?

Just in case there are any other Tarzan/ERB fans here who might be interested, I found this about the upcoming (July 1, 2016) movie based ob Burroughs' most popular, and never properly portrayed on either the big or small screen.

I would really like to get my hopes up about this, both in its faithfulness to the character as he was written, and to the general public being able to accept the real thing after the more than 100 years of watered down drivel, but it's really difficult at this point. Maybe later, when they start releasing trailers...
 
The plot for the movie left me unimpressed.. but.. one never knows.

This movie is going to bomb big time. There is zero talk and zero interest for it. It will be DOA. I forgot it was coming out next week.
 
They've had some ads out here for it in recent weeks, but they're not exactly doing their job of selling the movie. It's one of the most famous literary characters in the world, you think they'd know how to sell that.

I mean you can't even tell it's Alexander Skarsgard with his top off for a start.

Early projections has the film opening to $25–33 million in its opening weekend.Variety deemed it a weak result given its pricey budget. The site also highlighted that inorder for the film to break even, it would have to earn at least $400 million at the box office.
 
33 million would be more than I think... I am thinking 20-25. It's got a lot of competition and it's honestly an 'unknown' property.

More like a new take on an old and well established movie character, something like the reboot of the movie "Star Trek" franchise, though going in a somewhat different direction. Tarzan, the way that Burroughs wrote the character was a character aimed for an adult audience, as opposed to what, over the years in movies, became pretty much a children's character, especially as portrayed in the Disney animated series. Ignoring Bo Derek's abomination, this is the first honest attempt to return Tarzan to his status as an adult character since Lambert's portrayal in "Greystoke," (which could, from what I have seen so far, actually be seen as a lower budget prequel to the present movie)

With today's movie going audience, the people that will or are expected to see the movie, it's not an established movie character. It's more than likely a movie character 3/4's of the audience have never seen before, ergo the 'unknown' property. That's why the estimations are so low and they aren't even trying to really market it. It's the same thing that happened with John Carter all over again.

I don't think so. Even if most of today's movie goers haven't actually seen a Tarzan movie, there have been at least 3 live action TV series, plus several animated ones, plus the 3 animated Disney movies, and the French one a couple of years ago. Add to that, the name "Tarzan" is familiar in almost very culture throughout the world. Almost everyone has some idea who Tarzan is, even if the new version will be something of a shock for people expecting to see Weissmuller, Gordon Scott, or any of the other "typical" interpretations of the character. Add to that, there have been comic strips, paperback books, and paperback books available and selling to a steady, if small, market since the 60's. Virtually everyone knows who Tarzan is, even if they haven't seen one of the movies i years.

With the proper marketing (plus keeping the director within budget) "John Carter" could have been a very successful movie. The only reason that it is considered a flop is that it couldn't stay within its original $1.5 million budget. $300 million plus in worldwide ticket sales is actually quite impressive, considering that virtually no one, outside of a very small core of fans, had any idea who John Carter was, or what the story was about (ironic, considering the fact that J C is either the direct, or indirect, inspiration for just about every action hero of the 20th Century)
 
We'll see.. I think you are over estimating the cultural relevance.
 
Tarzan may be pretty well known, although nothing compared to 20 years ago and before but without marketing who are gonna rush to see the movie? The younger audience that's used to the Disney version or the 35+ crowd remembering their childhood Tarzan, whatever version that may be. I hope it's a good movie and with good reviews it may do ok. With bad reviews it'll bomb big time. Not that I want it to.

2) Samuel Jackson is in it
3) Gorilla's going 'ape shit'
4) Massive stampede
5) Eric Northman and Samuel Jackson.

Lol. I don't watch True Blood but yea I think I will check out this movie. Looks pretty good.
 
The Tarzan story has never really appealed to me, it makes me think of Frankie Howerd in Carry on up the Jungle 🙂
 
I've loved Tarzan since I was a little kid watching Gordon Scott on the big screen and Johnny Weissmuller on the small one. Ron Ely's Tarzan is still one of my all time favorite TV shows. And I've been a fan of the literary works of Edgar Rice Burroughs for more than 50 years. From what I have seen from trailers and promos, this will be the closest thing to actually realizing Burroughs' image of the Lord of the Jungle that has ever been attempted by Hollywood. Hopefully, it has been long enough since the previous misinterpretations that film goers will be able to accept the new image of ah educated man who speaks full sentences and doesn't have a chimpanzee for a best friend and comedy relief.

(One of my all time greatest wished for movies has always been "Tarzan At The Earth's Core," [imagine "Tarzan Meets Jurassic Park"] and we've finally gotten to the point with CGI and live action interface tat it could be a real possibility.)
 
Everything I've heard makes it seem like it's Samuel L. Jackson's movie. That is he pretty much the star of it and Tarzan is kinda a wimp.
 
I wonder what roles they have if it is S. L. Jackson's film is he Tarzan does that mean Alexander Skarsgard (Eric Northman) is getting dressed up as Jane? No doubt Ricky Gervais will be cheetah. Yep that might be fun.
