Question Anyone who didn't like The Avengers?

I really liked The Avengers. I think it was great and I even went to watch it twice, but a friend of mine didn't seem to like it too much.

I've seen lots of positive reaction here, but is there anybody who didn't like the movie?
Or do you know a person who didn't like it? And, of course, why?

I like The Avengers. It was good, but I don't think it was great. It was not a movie I am going to watch again.

The first problem is that it is Joss Whedon. I love almost everything he does. So the director of The Avengers had some big shoes to full -- Joss's prior works.

The problem with movies with Superheroes is that you know what is going to happen. The Superheroes will save the world. The suspense is gone. It addition, they are thinking huge money, and as someone pointed out, Joss wanted to kill someone, but the studio wouldn't let him. It wasn't the Joss I know and love. Without listing any spoilers, the main characters that die in Buffy and Angel and Serenity are brilliant to the plot, and very real. To me this was just a typical big budget Superhero movie.

IMHO, this does not rank among Joss's finest work. I would rank "The Body" and "Not Fade Away" as much better. Those I do rewatch over and over.

This movie does not hit "great" for me. It was good, and it was enjoyable 2 hours, but I just didn't feel Joss in the movie. Weird, eh? But if you told me it was Joss after the movie, I would have been surprised.

BTW, yesterday I just rewatched "The Gift." For me, that is great Joss Whedon. The Avengers is not. 🙁

I can see some people not liking it. If your not a fan of superhero movies and don't enjoy the loud and high action style then you probably wouldn't enjoy the movie. It's not a genre for everyone.

But it couldn't really be a "Joss movie" in the way you wanted it to be, because it had to stick to the superheros movie image. That's something I thought was clear before anyone would go see the movie. It's a Marvel movie first, a Joss Whedon movie after.

1. Agent Coulson dies.
2. This is the Avengers. You don't kill Captain America or one of the members. This is a million dollar property and Marvel has already planned multiple sequels. To kill a character in a movie and bring them back in the sequel is just bad storytelling.
3. Death isn't the only way to tell a good story. The Avengers had incredible interactions/conversations between the members.

But it couldn't really be a "Joss movie" in the way you wanted it to be, because it had to stick to the superheros movie image. That's something I thought was clear before anyone would go see the movie. It's a Marvel movie first, a Joss Whedon movie after.

I get that someone wouldn't like it if they don't like superhero movies. I could personnally see it 10 times a day and still think it's the best movie I've seen in a whiiiiiiiiiile!😀😀

This movie is about "The Avengers", not Joss Whedon. I think it's stupid to watch the movie thinking this movie should represent him. It's about bringing super-heroes who have been alive in comics for decades to the big screen, it's about every kid who has ever read an Avengers comic and dressed up like their favorite hero. Sometimes I feel Joss Whedon fans are too obsessed with him, and want all his work to be exactly the same. I bet he loved doing something different, a big budget super-hero movie full of iconic characters that he enjoyed (Joss is a big comic book fan)

This movie is about "The Avengers", not Joss Whedon. I think it's stupid to watch the movie thinking this movie should represent him. It's about bringing super-heroes who have been alive in comics for decades to the big screen, it's about every kid who has ever read an Avengers comic and dressed up like their favorite hero. Sometimes I feel Joss Whedon fans are too obsessed with him, and want all his work to be exactly the same. I bet he loved doing something different, a big budget super-hero movie full of iconic characters that he enjoyed (Joss is a big comic book fan)

Joss said himself he's a huge fan of comic books and I think this was just a treat for him. A big treat, but still just that. It was a way for him to have a lot of fun, while doing a movie he'd finally get recognized for. I bet he felt like a 10-years-old when he was working on set with everyone in their superhero costumes 😀

My friend, who I already said didn't like it so much, really disliked Hawkeye.
I liked Hawkeye very much but my friend's a LOTR fan and I could imagine that he was, like, offended or something.
He probably thought that Hawkeye was supposed to be a Legolas copy.
I don't care for LOTR. One might even say that I dislike it. Therefore I thought that Hawkeye was way cooler than Legolas or anybody from LOTR.

I think the movie was very much Joss. I don't think that a Joss-movie has to have all his stereotyped characteristics.
The thing is that Joss loves superheros and he made the movie with passion and not just to make copious amounts of money.
(That's not part of the subject, but I wanted to share my opinion.)

I know I'm in the minority. But honestly, I didn't see Joss. .

I hate musicals. Yet Joss did OMWF, and I absolutely love it. And Dr. Horrible is great, too.

I expected something different. Something that really changed the Superhero genre. I didn't see it. To me it was just another big budget movie. OTOH, my son is seeing it for the 3rd time today with his mom, this time in 3D.

Well, it's not stupid. It's what I wanted. It's what all his other projects are. They all have a Joss touch to it, which is why I love him. And I don't want every one of his works to be exactly the same, but I want them to feel like a Joss Whedon production.

And JC, you dislike LOTR?? Have you gone wonky? Those are 3 of the great movies ever!! That's almost as crazy as me not loving The Avengers. 😉

It's funny, This was the exact reason I didn't want Joss doing the movie and was a little disappointed when I heard Joss was doing the movie.

As much as I like Joss's work, The more I've seen of it the more I realise how predictable it is, it very much follows the same pattern and very similar story telling, and from reading the comics and hearing the ideas he's said for alternate stories that he couldn't do because of budget or an actor wasn't available - they all sounded awful.

I think Joss is best when he is controlled by a studio, the very questionable comic book stories compared to the stories they did on the show, just tell me that maybe Joss runs at bit to far with his stories and needs to be reigned back.

Yep, I don't like LOTR. I don't like the whole fantasy genre. If a movie has knights and stuff like that in it, I most likely won't like it.
So I can totally understand if someone doesn't like superhero movies.

From what I've seen and heard, Joss was pretty much forced to keep the first "Avengers" movie story line as established in canon, with the exceptions that Black Widow and Hawkeye have replaced the original team members, Ant Man and the Wasp, and Captain America wasn't introduced into the series until Issue 3, making him, technically the Sixth Avenger, not the First. The sequel, which was a certainty even before the first weekend was over, will certainly be allowed more creativity, so he just might get to kill somebody off yet. My nominee for the "going down fighting" honor would be Hawkeye, who seems to be the least important member at the moment. And, since this is Joss we're talking about, he can be resurrected in the next sequel as a major part of the plot.

It was well deserved, and felt great!! hehehe. I love that we longer have "karma scores."

BTW, I'm not really into fantasy either. Two exceptions are LOTR and A Knight's Tale, which was so much fun.

Princess Bride seems to be loved by all, but I can't get through 5 minutes of that.

When I watched the movie I felt they gave the impression he was dead. But in my personal opinion he isn't really dead. There's a popular theory that Agent Coulson is going to become Vision later on, this is mainly because Clark Gregg is signed on to do more Marvel films, he looks a lot like Vision and has the same kind of emotionless reaction to things, SHIELD has been established as a shady organization and we never see a body

Either way, Clark Gregg will be back in Marvel movies, so it will be interesting to see how his character plays out

I enjoyed it, but it didn't exceed my expectations. It just felt like a standard superhero film, yet everybody gushed about it like it showed us something new. It was still great, and certain parts were absolutely hilarious. 🙂

I can see why some didn't like the movie or thought it was ok, my mum didn't seem to rave about it too much after seeing it. She said there was too much distruction in it. But if your not in Marvel then I can see why it may not blow your mind. Personally I loved it and really felt Joss throughout the film, right down to the humour and of course "killing" off a character.

I said to my friend that Joss loves killing off characters out of the blue so it was no surprise when I heard that it was going to happen, I just had no idea who was going to get the chop. I honestly feel very proud that Joss got to direct this movie, we've all known for years how much he loves comic books and has constantly referenced them throughout Buffy and Angel.

I can see why you'd say that. It wasn't quite as obvious as his other works. But honestly after Buffy & Angel, I struggled to find the wit in the more subdued Firefly and Dollhouse (which I did find, and love). I guess I see more of Joss in the dialogue. And that's part of why I'm going to see it again: there was so much good dialogue that I didn't feel I got to absorb all of it (with all of the action sequences in there). So if you do get to watch it again, you might want to pay more attention to that than to all of the fancy blow 'em up scenes. 🙂 And I am really loving that your son loved it, that is so cool! 😀 My older two loved it, the 5 year old fell asleep but we're going back on Wednesday especially for him (as he's the huge superhero fan in the house).

I had to fight hysterical laughter for a VERY long time.

Because for Joss Whedon, The Avengers was like a sunny happy picnic with rainbows and sunshine compared to some of his other shows.

At least in that regard.
