Are Forums on the Decline?

I don't think Buffy-Boards will ever be on the way out. But that's just my bias opinion because I love it here. 😛 lol

IT ALL STARTED THREE YEARS AGO! I'm telling you peeps! 😱

...

Seriously, it's a good read, but I don't think boards are on the out. Maybe in the future tho, with Twitter, Tumblr and more things to come! 😉

You don't need to mock me.
I think forums formed around special interests, like this one, will still be going strong for quite some time. They're a lot more versatile for things like this than, say, Facebook.

I use forums as much as I ever did. I don't even use Facebook personally.

I have way to many opinions to share them with RL people. I need discussion forums.

.....

That was meant as a joke, but it's really true. And I think the same goes for everyone else.

Well I just mean in general. If you don't use forums as much as you used to, why?

Well, I don't use myspace any more.... But I'm on Buffy-Boards and Facebook pretty much every day.

Are Twitter and Tumblr even considered forums, Tome?

I agree with you. I think this place will be going for quite some time, or any other place that has a strong fanbace.

Is Facebook considered a forum??

LOL, I think that is quite true for a lot of people... I mean, most people in RL don't even understand my love for Buffy or why I'd want to talk about it so much. 😛

No, what I meant is that I could see forums disappearing in the future with all these other ways you have to discuss with friends online. But I doubt it'll happen soon.

Ohhhh, I see!
I didn't read all of the link but I agree that it's really hard to start a forum and be successful. I think that has a lot to do with the fact there's SO many out there! To try and stand out, especially when like me, you can't afford to do it, is really tough.

This place is the first forum I joined and other than my own, the only one I'm actually a member of. Now, as a massive fan of shows like OTH and TVD, you'd think I'd be part of many others but I'm not and I never will be. From my point of view forums, or my joining of them is declining but it has nothing to do with other medium like Facebook or Tumblr, but because of the fans of those shows. Seriously, I have so many issues with fandoms that I point blank refuse to join any more forums lol.

I know we have our moments here when it comes to heated debates about the shows but the stuff I see on the others I lurk is, is just awful. There's so much hatred in some fandoms, especially for OTH and TVD, that I simply cannot bring myself to join the discussions. Which totally sucks for me lol because I desperately want to discuss them with lots of different people but there aren't enough forums like BB where I feel comfortable to do so or without the fear of being banned before I even really get started.

Anyway, that was a ramble. 😛 Basically email and other social networking sites aren't the reason I don't join, its the fans, and I think the sheer volume of forums means that it takes a heck of a lot of time and effort to get one going.

Pretty much this. I have about 4 other shows I would love to discuss I simply refuse to join another fandom. I can barely handle this one!

yup lol. Ans I agree with kean's comment too lol
I think sometimes people start forums up as vanity exercises for themselves and their friends, and those are the ones that don't survive.

What a forum needs to be able to last, in my opinion, is to be able to bring together people who wouldn't otherwise have any contact with each other and keep bringing new people into the discussion.

Hmm, it's an interesting question, and (without reading the article) I can see that POV. Facebook etc has changed the way we interact online, but I agree with others: FB doesn't give me the venue to have long, meaningful discussions/debates about specific topics. Forums like BB that have a very specific focus will probably always attract people. I've been on Babycenter for 7 years, and while I'm not on as much as I used to be, I'm a part of a private group on there that started out as a very specific debate board. While we don't usually debate on that topic anymore, it has evolved into something else, it's more social. Most of us have friended each other on FB, but still, we can get more in depth in our discussions than we can on FB.

I use forums as much as I ever did... actually more. This forum has changed my life in terms of internet use.

I agree with Flannen, the most difficult thing about creating a successful forum is that there are so many out there and you have to stand out somehow... and you have to find a way to get decent active membership.

The most successful forum I ever started was in 2008 and it was a Jeremy Sumpter fan board. I started it because the official forum on his website was down (to punish the members for poor behavior) and the IMDb board was a wreck and full of really terrible people who were awful to others. So I posted a thread in the IMDb board about my new board... It had a lot stricter rules than the Jeremysumpter.com forum and it had rules which made it better than the IMDb board. I would go to IMDb and bump my thread every day and the membership I got was pretty much all of the active members of the board I was originally on, some from the Peter Pan IMDb board and some who were active on the JS IMDb board but wanted a more civil environment. We were an active and successful forum for about a year and a half until the JS.com forum opened up again with new rules and management/moderation.

So I stole my decent active membership from already established boards and what made me special was my strict and decent rules and moderation.

I think moderation also has a lot to do with whether a forum will fail or survive. If you're too lenient... all hell breaks lose. Members are terrible to each other and eventually they don't want to come on. Also, bad member behavior and loose moderation can scare newbies off because who wants to sign up for a board if they're going to just get yelled at by other people? If you're too strict in what members can or cannot say, it can feel like an invasion of their free speech. You really need to find the line and walk on it. That can be really difficult especially since the line is different for every forum and every subject.

I like forums. They let you chat with people who share a similar interest.

Tumblr does the same thing, but it doesn't have the same discussion aspect.

Facebook is full of real life people and how many of your friends really all watch the same tv show and are hugely into it like on a forum?

Twitter is too short to have the same type of interaction as a forum.

I have a personalized group of Chlolle (of smallville) fans who I cat with via instant message in a big group a lot, but I still belong to a Smallville forum because there I can chat with people and have long discussion about other aspects and without actually having to get to know every one of them first. The group chat we use is private and almost always goes into personal topics. The forums allow focused chat with people you otherwise wouldn't chat with.

Not every forum is going to make it. If 10 buffy forums were all started at the same time and two or three of the forums got a bunch of posters and a ton of discussion, more users would continue to join those rather than the others with little discussion because people want to go to the ones where there will really be things to talk about.

I really enjoy forums. Despite being very much an early adopter of modern technology I never really took to the Internet for discussions. I'd seen how useless Facebook is and didn't enjoy finding out that half of my friends could barely string a sentence together in writing, 'liked' foul things and made homophobic, sexist and racist comments. I think that site brings out the worst in people, and got sick of the inane shit everyone blabs on about. That put me off Twitter etc too, and the internet resorted to being for emails, porn, illegal media downloading and work.

When I signed up to this site in December last year I only wanted to comment on something I'd noticed when rewatching Buffy/Angel with my girl. I can't even remember what. Despite everybody getting deeply offended by almost everything I posted I quite enjoyed the community here and stuck around way after I'd run out of Buffy related things to discuss.. and that's a major part of what forums are about; community.

It's interesting to be a part of a community that has all types of people from all over the world, mostly well educated with one thing in common. It feels like a wonderful escape from work and the pressures in reality, I know it's not real and half of you are people I probably wouldn't pay any attention to in real life but when I come on here I feel like a different person. Admittedly a worse person considering the reactions I seem to get, but it's nice to have something that's just for me and that none of my friends etc are involved in, because they usually only want to talk about my work and rarely the possibility of Xander getting pissed.

When the intenet first started it was forums that it was almost exclusively used for, in the years since then they have barely evolved- they are almost exactly the same as before just with a lick of paint and some fancy 'post reply' animations to appease the ADD generation. There is just something about this form of communication that works, I don't know if it is the leisurely pace at which you can post, the information you can accidentally stumble across or the fact that you can contribute as little or as much as you choose but it just feels right. If you'd told me six months ago that I'd always have a BB tab open on my Mac or spend half my time in the toilet reading about Spike and Anya on my iPhone while squeezing out a child sized turd I would have laughed in your stupid face, but it's now true.

Whenever I have five minutes spare I have a look to see what's going on here, to see Bananabuffy's latest song, Zobo's exploits with her crazy sister, Washburne being serious, Ms Trick being French, Darla trying (and failing) to hide her fun personality behind some stern modding, Caitaintdead being a sexy drunk butch skinny dipping mentalist and many other people and their strange ways. Even if these things here piss me off sometimes I'm still glad to read them because they are a gateway to another world and much as I am conscious of how uncool it really is to come here, I don't care because the place always makes me smile.

So we have established that forums are about a sense of community as well as an escape from the real world. There is one more thing about them, and this is what I believe will stop them from ever being extinct- their addictiveness. I am the sort of guy that had always looked down on people that are always on the net, and to some degree still do- I find it pathetic that anybody would choose it over a real life. However, this place has made me reassess those feelings and while I could never endorse excessive internet usage, thanks to BB I now understand it. There are a lot of lonely people out there in less then ideal situations and I truly believe places like this can help them get through shitty times and bring some joy to otherwise empty lives. Because of that I truly hope forums are here to stay.

Awesome post!
I agree with most of what Christopher said, because some of it doesn't pertain to me. 😉

I've been a fan of forums since I was about 14 and joined my first one, which was also my first, technical, internship. It was a forum off of a website, and I did a lot of work for the main website.

There was one I joined about 7 years ago. It was my favorite place on the web. I've met some of the people from that forum, and though there were really only about 6 or 7 people that posted, we were all super close. It really saddens me how that has gone so downhill. No one posts anymore, or keeps in touch at all. But Sue, Carol, Krissy, Teya, Brian, and DD were all great people, and I hope they're doing well. Talked to Carol not too long ago. Brian's the one I met yup with at a concert a few years ago, actually. I really miss logging on and talking to those guys. They were there for me in a way that my family and friends couldn't be at that time. They were my support system through my teen years. And it's really only been in the last two years that it's gone dead there. Still, it makes me sad.

I don't think this place will ever die. There are so many dedicated members, and there have been for WAY longer than I've been here (and trust me, I kick myself a LOT for not searching for this place before) and I believe there will be for a long time. Forever? Probably not. Next 10 years? I can see that.

I'm not sure. I'm part of a few forum sites and they're all really popular. I think as long as people have computers and things to do, there will always be procrastination in the form of forums. 😛

Personally, I've never even used forums this much before. But I'm not sure forums are on the decline. I think It depends on whether people have topics to talk about and making threads about them. And being able keep the thread going. But with as many members on BB, it can be quite easy to keep a thread going at times.🙂

I honestly don't think so. I think forums are increasing. But I just feel that way, because I've been using forums more than ever now.

3 years ago, I thought forums were a hassle, and I couldn't figure out a way to join in the discussions, so I made an account and was never active. I'm still a little awkward here and there, but I'm apart of many forums now, that I am addicted to.

Forums that deal with a show, seem more inclined to have a lot people discussing the show on a forum than some where else, imo.

In general, I think it just depends on the subject of the forum, and what people are more interested in. The forums I am apart of, are forums dealing with TV Shows I like. There is only one forum that is 'gamer' forum that I enjoy, because I know the people personally, and have been on it for years. I don't even play that many games. =/
