Are they worth it?

Well, I want to say no, it wouldn't ruin anything even if you hate the season, but when I think of season 6, I think that maybe the show was "defiled" a bit, and that it didn't feel as good after The Gift. But it was never a real option for me to stop watching the show, or not to find out what happened to the characters after season 7.
I definitly think you should read the first TPB, or buy the first 5 digitally(it took me 5 issue to like the season) and read on your webbrowser or on your phone/tablet. Otherwise, you will always wonder.

I definitly think you won't reget reading them. Either way, you won't have to wonder. And issue 5 is very easy to get moved by. It's very poignant.

No, they're not worth reading.
Basically, they are one PR stunt after another ( Buffy is a lesbian! Buffy is pregnant! Buffy is a robot! ) with derivative nonsense, boredom and filler in between. Emotionally flat, direction-less, borderline offensive and pointlessly ambiguous. Also, the art is substandard.

Agreed the art is bad - I couldn't tell Buffy from Willow in one example I saw.

It depends on how you look at them. If you go into it wanting and/or expecting a continuation that is similar to the tv show then you will probably be disappointed. But if you go into it without expectations and wanting a story that happens to have characters you enjoy, then you will probably find them fairly entertaining.
Evil UU does make a good point with the continuous PR stunts that Joss and Co. keep pulling; they have gotten to the point where it's painfully obvious that they care more about making headlines and getting attention than the story itself.
If you don't want to invest money into the comics you should check out your local library, several members here have been able to find them at theirs. 🙂

I find them very enjoyable but yes, they are very far fetched and much different than the tv series. But all the loveable characters are there and their personalities work quite well on comic book pages in my opinion. I find them to be a lot more quirky and light hearted than the tv series.

I've always thought this viewpoint was unfair, with nothing to back it up. While I do think that Joss spends a lot of his time doing other stuff makes the story suffer(how else to explain the Warren misstakes), but I don't it's anything but a weak theory that they would write mainly to get into the headlines. Other than the three things evil uu mentioned, and the space sex, what has been headline worthy in over 40issues?
We got 40+ issues of character development, that sometimes makes me cry, so I personally can't see how it's all about the attention. Too few "OMG he didn't!" and too much good writing for that to be plausible, in my opinion. I really think the comics are good, and since I'm not alone in that, I think it's a big jump between "These comics are bad" to "This is a publicity stunt". Joss worked 7 years on a show, seemingly always trying to stay true to his vision, no matter that it wasn't a very maimstream one, so I have a hard time believing his heart isn't still in it.
Not saying that you guys are absolutely 100%wrong about Joss' & co intentions, I'm just saying I think it's very likely you are. But it's not like I could read their minds and find out.

I stopped reading after about 8 issues or so. So I am definitely of the opinion that it is not worth it.
I thought it was on the level of fanfic. Bad fanfic, for the most part. You can read bad fanfic for free all over the web.

I read them. And no, they are not worth reading. IMHO, Joss perspective as a created have shifted significantly in the last decade towards much darker, more cynical and less enjoyable - in a sense that his view is much more difficult to share and understand. If you want to see a glimpse of what he is writing about now - go see Cabin in the Woods. That should be enough to give you a perspective on the comics - plus they lack the input from the actors ensemble and most of the old writers crew is not on board , being replaced by beginners who are not native to the verse. The comics are at best sketchy - at their worst they are plain caricature of the verse as its used to be. You will save yourself money and disappointment if you stay away from them.

Combining the elements of Warren being a living skinless corpse; Buffy being a lesbian, then pregnant, then a robot; Dawn being a giant, a centaur, a doll, and surviving; Xander dating Dawn; Angel killing Giles (Intentionally or not); Buffy and Angel having sex in space; a giant robot Dawn with a tail; Spike having a freakin space ship piloted by giant cockroaches; and . . . well, I think you get my message. Not. Worth. It. Either enjoy "Chosen" or create your own ending.

I saw one or two examples, read all the Season 8 summaries and I don't see how Joss let this travesty go out under his name.

I thought I would come and have a look at this thread and see if they were worth reading. All I can do is laugh at some of the storylines you guys have mentioned. Maybe if I can separate the idea that yes, this is indeed a comic and not the TV series I love, I might be able to read them. I won't buy them though - I'll see if I can find them elsewhere.

I read the episode summaries and I agree. The Buffy story was beginning to exhaust itself in Season 7 of the TV series. The comics seem to be "let's see what nonsensical situations and we can dream up" and it all goes completely off the rails. Obviously, it is much easier to live abroad in any city you want in a comic book whereas in a TV show, it gets pricey. But the silly situations in the comics? Not worth looking at. And the art quality was so bad in the one example I saw that you couldn't tell Willow from Buffy. Two thumbs down.

Hey, to each their own, but count me in as a fan. There are some things I don't like, but as a whole, I like them. In fact, I probably like season 8 better than I've liked season 9. You have to remember that this is the world of comics. If you (general you) don't like comics, fine. Then you probably won't like them. There is one issue in particular that I think is one of the finest things I've ever read ("The Chain"). So, if someone wants to check them out, see if you can find them from your local public library and see what you think for yourself. That's what I did before I ended up buying all the season 9 trade paperbacks. Sometimes Dark Horse has sales on their digital comics and you can save some money that way.
Oh, and a bit related- we're doing a Angel: After The Fall re-read. ATF was done by IDW, not Dark Horse, is the official continuation of Angel the Series, and is excellent.

I chose to go a different route and started reading the Buffy Omnibus collections, which for those who don't know, they are a canon series of stories that serve as a companion to the show as it progresses through the seasons. They are these cool backstories that fill in the gaps of Buffy and gangs time at sunnydale high and other adventures. I prefer these as they feel more like the Tv series than the stories they invented afterward, like season eight and nine. I highly reccomend them. The artwork is superb and the stories and original yet feel like true Joss material.

I've read the 1st 10 issues and I love it so far. Try it out for yourself. Some people may not like and that's fine. However, I do want to say so far I strongly disagree with the argument that Joss is just trying to do PR stunts. I've loved reading these issues and reconnecting with the characters I love. I've seen some real character growth and real heart felt moments that remind me of the show. Conversations between Giles and Faith, Willow and Kennedy, and Dawn and Xander, all spring to mind

In my opinion, they are definitely, 100% worth it. However, when I take a step back and look from a non-Buffy-freak, I'd say the first 20 issues are definitely, 100% worth it. This series made me into a comic fan, and to this day only a few have been better than the first half of BS8. The series is still very much enjoyable after issue 20 but it just isn't the same quality.

BUT...
Where do I start? Like, how do I know which comic is which? Or is there an entire 'season' I can buy [like you would with the season DVDs; and if there isn't, there really should be]?
