Are they worth it?

I am really interested in the comics, even going so far as to check out the selection at my local bookstore.

BUT...

Where do I start? Like, how do I know which comic is which? Or is there an entire 'season' I can buy [like you would with the season DVDs; and if there isn't, there really should be]?

Season 8 was published as a series of 8 trade paperbacks, in order:

1. The Long Way Home (by Joss Whedon)
2. No Future For You (by Brian K. Vaughan)
3. Wolves At the Gate (by Drew Goddard)
4. Time of Your Life (by Joss Whedon)
5. Predators and Prey (by various authors)
6. Retreat (by Jane Espenson)
7. Twilight (by Brad Meltzer)
8. Last Gleaming (by Joss Whedon)

These books also contain all the one-shots and webcomics that went with season 8.

They are also being published as a serious of 4 fancy hardcover editions, which have sketchbooks and stuff (like DVD extras), but they are pretty expensive and not recommended if you don't know whether you're going to like season 8 or not.

there are also lots of buffy comics that were coming out during the show, in-between adventures. most of those are forgettable, but some are entertaining, and a few are worthy of standing between episodes. also, tales of the slayer and tales of the vampire are quite good, as is fray.

i like the new comic, but i do wish it were...smaller. i get it that a comic is like an unlimited budget, but the things that always made buffy great and enjoyable--character interaction and dialogue--still work in the comic, except when it gets lost in a haze of giant robot lesbian cockroach spaceships. in the end, the characters feel true to me. i recommend it, but i do find it uneven.

This. A thousand times this.

I enjoy S8 but this is exactly my central problem with it, and what keeps me from loving it like I do the show.

I agree with you here as well! They can go a bit overboard sometimes with the scale of the action and for me the story doesn't seem to flow as well because of that :/

Which is why I love Angel & Faith in Season 9 -- they really cut down on the overly large and outrageous elements, and when they're in the comic, they're all character motivated in ways that make sense.

But yeah, Season 8 has a bit too much of being a comic book, if that makes any sense, which I think explains most of what's wrong with it. The other thing that I think was an issue is the number of different writers they had -- you can definitely tell, issue to issue, when they're shifting and using different writers.

i fell behind when this title started (but was still getting it in my box) and just started reading it. i completely agree, and am loving it.
