Openly gay director/writer Alan Ball's newest television series brings to life the Charlaine Harris Southern vampire mysteries. In True Blood we find characters both gay and straight; Ball says most vampires are bisexual.

“The vampires are, for the most part, pretty bisexual,” Ball says in an exclusive interview with OuttakeOnline.com's Charlotte Robinson. “They're more interested in blood and they're less confined by the need to be one thing or another.”

The highly anticipated series is Ball's second collaboration with cable channel HBO, the first being the Emmy-award winning, gay inclusive, Six Feet Under.

In True Blood, vampires have been freed from the tyranny of feeding on human blood thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood. Overnight, vampires ascend from their coffins to participate in society. Will they be accepted or marginalized?

Ball is best know for writing the 2000 Oscar-winning movie American Beauty. Originally written as a play, the film version deleted an important gay plotline involving the homicidal Col. Fitt's loss of his male lover in the Vietnam War. While Col. Fitt's homosexuality is not directly addressed in the film, it is understood that his demented murderous rampage stems from a traumatic Vietnam nightmare, brought on by the unacceptable suggestion that his son is gay.

In the interview, Ball also says most movies today lack soul. “So many movies are not about anything, they're just about profit – you know, they have no soul. ... [computer generated movies] have nothing to do with being a human.”

True Blood premieres on cable channel HBO September 7th.

I know that there's quite a bit of fan fiction that supports the idea, but as for myself, I've never ever seriously thought about it one way or the other beyond the famous, "... except for that one time..." line by Spike.

Holy shit this would destroy my hole vampire-world. Including Spike, Angel, Harmony and co. So no in my eyes they will never be bisexual except some individuals. 😀

I think so.

I think sexuality is a human idea applied to society, and there is a certain amount of not caring about society rules by Vampires, so they wouldn't care about sexuality.

I think this was hinted at in Buffy, there was implied scenes where both Dru and Darla were together, and there was that bit about Spike and Angel saying there was that one time they were together.

In the article Ball is referring specifically to the vamps in True Blood, so it is definitely fair to say that some of the undead inhabitants of Bon Temps are bi.

I know that in True Blood how a vampire was as a human seems to be how they are as a vampire. In season 1 Eddie was a fat, gay man and remained such once vampirised (is that even a word?) So for vamps in general, I guess their orientation is dictated by their individual nature as it is with people in real life. Not being a huge fan of vampire stuff outside of True Blood and the Buffyverse I don't really know how other verses portray their undead when it coms to sexuality.

Since people's sexuality isn't a factor in whether or not I like them, neither is the sexuality of a character, so I haven't given it any thought.

I don't think all vampires are bisexual, just like not all people are bisexual. Some people have certain preferences and I think the same applies to vampires.

It seems that it is explored more directly in True Blood. I actually don't agree with him about True Blood, although I have more experience with the book series than the television series. In the books they're portrayed more as gay, straight, or bi, depending on how they were as human. It seems to me that Whedon's vampires are more fluid sexually, at least to the amount that it is hinted at on-screen. I don't know a lot about vampires in other works but let's be honest- vampires mostly feed via the carotid artery and the neck is a very erogenous area. Not only that but the closeness of the vampire's/prey's body, & the fact that bodily fluids are consumed/exchanged, makes the act of biting (& siring even moreso) extremely intimate & sensual, regardless of the gender or orientation of either "partner". I think that's one of the reasons we are drawn to the mythos of the vampire.

I also think that vampires are not bound by human societal mores so they're more free to "experiment".

I think that at least in the Buffy and True Blood universes, vampires are free from many of the consequences of irresponsible sexual behaviour (pregnancy, disease, guilt etc) so there's nothing to stop them trying whatever they want to do. And if you lived for hundreds of years (which is probably more true of the True Blook vampires) there would probably come a point where you were at least tempted to try and nothing to stop you.

Some folk seem to be taking the point of view that some are, and some aren't.

Vampires like the majority of life forms on this planet can't be bothered with giving everything a name. And they san't be bothered with stupid human limitations.
As far as I'm aware it's only these religious cults (C of E, Catholics, Anglican and the myriad of other religions) that go on about having relations/relationships that are man and woman only.

I think all vampires are pretty much pan-sexual. Fitting in with the vampire lore... I think like that guy you quoted I'd go up to see who it was if I wasn't so lazy said vampires like blood. I'm not too sure they care who it comes from. And since the blood and the sex have kind of been combined in modern vampire tales... I'd say they probably don't care much about that.

I don't think I'd say all vampires are bisexual. IMO vampires are very likely at act on their impulses and desires and this often leads them to engaging in sexual encounters much more freely and openly than humans would. I do think its well established that vampires are very sexual but I don't know that there is a definitive answer about that sexuality.

I think it's very likely that all vampires are bisexual. Sexuality is a product of human nature which comes from our mammalian trait of sexual reproduction. Vampires aren't mammals and they don't reproduce sexually, so there's no chemical reason for gender to factor into their sexual appetites. Obviously they enjoy sex, but any preference we see them showing for male or female partners is just that, a preference - they weren't "born that way", because they weren't born at all.
