If so, stop using your phone.

From Washington Post

Mobile technology has transformed the way we live — how we read, work, communicate, shop and date. But we already know this.

What we have not yet grasped is the way the tiny machines in front of us are remolding our skeletons, possibly altering not just the behaviors we exhibit but the bodies we inhabit.

New research in biomechanics suggests that young people are developing hornlike spikes at the back of their skulls — bone spurs caused by the forward tilt of the head, which shifts weight from the spine to the muscles at the back of the head, causing bone growth in the connecting tendons and ligaments. The weight transfer that causes the buildup can be compared to the way the skin thickens into a callus as a response to pressure or abrasion. The result is a hook or horn like feature jutting out from the skull, just above the neck.

In academic papers, a pair of researchers at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, argues that the prevalence of the bone growth in younger adults points to shifting body posture brought about by the use of modern technology. They say smartphones and other handheld devices are contorting the human form, requiring users to bend their heads forward to make sense of what’s happening on the miniature screens.

The study came out last year but has received fresh attention following the publication last week of a BBC story that considers, “How modern life is transforming the human skeleton.” Since then, the unusual formations have captured the attention of Australian media, and have variously been dubbed “head horns” or “phone bones” or “spikes” or “weird bumps.”

What was that an x-ray of, what type of x-ray shows the skeleton and the human body? I watch the news daily and I have never seen a report like that mentioned above, maybe it was in a newspaper that was released only on Christmas Island. Where is the university campus that came from? Have you held a modern mobile phone, they are nothing like the shape of a human skull. Generally speaking horns are situated on the top of the head or the forehead, not at the back and below the ears they are a deformation.

We're slowly turning into a bunch of troglodytes basically. Yuck!

Hey! I resent that! This study is proof that we were better off physically without the futuristic smart devices. Something I aspire to do.

Although, it could give us a benefit if it ever did come down to a head banging contest to see who is the most intelligent.

@Octavia I just can't get the image of boney nodes bursting forth from the back of our heads. *shudder*

Hopefully we'll be long gone before it becomes the norm. Or like, someone will come up with a better device that we don't look down at. Then we only have one generation of horn heads who will be a dent in the history of evolution.

So, we're safe. We are probably all too old to be horny.

Seems like they're just describing curvature of the spine, which is a risk for constant phone users but has also been a risk for regular computer users, and desk workers in general.

But yeah, there are many, many bad things about spending 90% of one's waking hours staring down at a tiny phone screen. There have been times I was on the bus and was the only person looking up aside from the driver (hopefully).

I merely pretend to look at my phone when I want to avoid social interaction. It makes it easier to avoid intercourse with people you don't want to hear speak. Not saying that a whole busload of people (excluding the driver hopefully) was trying ignore you.

The news story I saw, the “expert” doctor showed x rays with an actual bone spur coming out at the base of the skull. He said it’s to shore up our spine.

Shame if you wear high necked sweaters.

Nah, I never try to talk to anybody. It's my main policy in life.

I wonder how many people saw the thread title, immediately started to read the topic, then said, "Damn it," and left. 😅

Did they have an earpiece in so folk wouldn't think they was talking to him or her self?
somenthing i love about buffy is that practically theres no cellphones, except when buffy gives one to dawn for first day high school, that was cool..

When Buffy first threatens Cordelia with a stake, she pulls out her phone and extends the whip antenna, saying she has to call everyone she knows.

Well, Cordy's family was wealthy (before her father committed tax fraud) so she was probably one of the select few who owned a mobile phone.

That was the era before the flip phone. I wrote a screenplay section a few years ago showing what would happen if the scoobies had modern devices available. It was called Buffy 2016 so it is probably buried in the Sunnydale Cemetery by now. You may find it here:
