Are you what we call an "emotional eater" - meaning that you crave to eat something when you get real mad or sad?

I know it is considered as a disease by some, because it often ends up with a case of obesity. I am an emotional eater, but I control myself. If I get bad cravings, I eat an apple or a cup of fruit salad.

But sometimes, my mother take home some pastries and for whatever reason she gets on my nerves (like now) and I eat 4 pastries at once. And the worst is that some days I had worked hard to exercise and all, but it is all blown off by it...

I know it is kinda common, but any here who can relate?

If I get angry I put on some heavy metal real loud. Ok, not so much anymore but in younger years. When it comes to comfort food there's been way too much. Add that to bad genes and crappy legs and it's a real bad mix. Not to put blame. Just a fact. Comfort food and depression isn't the best mix either. So to say the least I suck at controling it.

If I have a bad day then I usually crave sugar and comfort food like macaroni and cheese.

I also tend to eat out of boredom, but only when I'm at home and there's enough food to be able to snack. At uni I never have enough food so I've mastered my cravings so I don't need to buy anything that isn't part of a proper meal.

I know what you mean. When I was working full time and it was a slow day, I kept eating lots of snacks all through the day... at home I try and control myself by keeping myself busy.

I eat when I'm bored. So I try really hard to not be bored. lol

I also tend to cram like 30 Oreo's if I've had a really bad week. So I guess I am a bit.

Anyone has ideas to try to reduce emotional eating? Like tricks or something?

Personnally I know that it's been better since I started eating more healthy stuff, but if anyone has tricks, I'd be glad to try them out..

I am. I have to be very cautious of what and how much I consume.

Try replacing eating with something else, like a hobby or good habit. For me, I like to take a short walk, go shoot around, clean, paint my nails or do something artsy. I have a drawer full of inspiration and craft ideas that I can go look through if I need to take my mind off something. Also, sometimes a large glass of water fills me up enough to curb and cravings.

I'm the opposite actually: when I'm too stressed I feel sick to my stomach and it's difficult to eat. That's also dangerous!

But there are definitely things you can do to control it! brinkster130's ideas are really great. For me, going for a run really helps clear my head when I'm feeling upset and exercise will certainly make you want to eat less.

Another thing to try: force yourself to eat slowly. It takes a certain amount of time for your brain to register that it's eating and a lot of the time what happens is that you're "full" before you realize it, and you end up consuming more calories than you needed, (or wanted!)

I'm all about comfort.... be it food or music or soft clothing that feels good on my skin....
YES.... I comfort myself however I can.

I go through these periods of depression that are kind of brought on by stress and anxiety...and when I'm stressed out or nervous, I don't eat. I practically starve. It's weird. I just have no appetite when I feel like crap. When I'm upset about something like not doing well on a test, but I'm fine mentally, like if everything else in my life is fine...I'll eat a lot. It's kind of hard to explain.

I'm not very observant about what I eat and I know for a fact I eat all the wrong things. I'm not sure how I actually exist right now to be honest 😛 But yeah when I'm sad, tired or stressed I like to eat chicken soup, chocolate or various junk foods. And I eat when I'm bored. Or just...for the crack really. I'm eating those chocolate mikado things right now just because it's there. And considering I just got up, this is my breakfast. Boy I need to be healthier 😛

When i am sad or stressed i cant eat a thing. i will just work myself up into a complete mess. I eat when i am happy, i eat lots of cake 😀

Also, eating could also be connected to good emotions, don't forget that! 🙂 Over eating is not good, but neither is undereating! To treat yourself once in a while can be a good thing and not something one should feel guilty about!

I have compulsive eating disorder. I self medicate with food... so much so that it's a problem. When I start eating emotionally, I cannot stop. I used to cut for self harm... but when I quit that, I started lashing out by eating. So yes, I am an emotional eater...

i can't eat when i'm pissed off. when i get upset or nervous...i completely lose my appetite. im also one of those ppl who's been known to "forget" to eat when im so busy or trying to complete a project @ work or task for school.

Lol, I've never understood how one can 'forget' to eat 🙂 I'm one of those people who just stop to function as a human being unless I eat something every third hour 😀
