At this moment I am, there are a few things that I would be happier with, but overall I am happy

Errr, I'd say yes and no. Sometimes I'm quite content and then sometimes I'm all "what am I doing with my life, why aren't I better at this or that etc etc etc." I think it'll take quite a bit until I'm totally happy with myself and my life, really!

Compared to some though I don't suppose I have all that much to whinge about!

I'm up, I'm down, I'm all around. One moment I'm grateful to be alive, the next moment I'm upset because I tripped and dropped my cup of noodles. Haha. 😛 But most of the time, I try to stay happy and upbeat. It's all in your head, anyway. Happiness truly is a choice, it's just up to you.

I've said most of the time. I'm happy at the moment but wait till my low and I won't be (I'm Bipolar) so can't really say I'm content with who I am all of the time.

I'd love to say yes but, being the melodramatic person I am, I have this undesired ability to find the bad part in everything... I'm not totally unhappy (because something as small as buying the first season of Supernatural yesterday still made my entire day) but I can't say that I'm happy either. Especially with what happened in the past year and a half...

I'm happy as long as I don't think about bad things that upset me. You know, even when I hear something really stupid that Joss has decided to put in the comics, that upsets me. That can ruin my day or week. Or if someone tells me what to do or if there's something I have to do just because I have to (like going to the doctor, which I more than hate and maybe have a fobia of it because I can be close to death and I won't go), I'd get really annoyed and hate the world.

Except for that, I'm a very upbeat and hyper person who can't stop talking (I mean it, I get jaw pains because I talk too much 😀) and joking around (I'm a VERY cynical person, people get mad at me because I can't talk seriously for one second).
What makes me happy the most, is my dog and my bunny. Seeing them happy and playing around and kissing me, makes me happy.

I think there are many things in our world that suck, and our world is bumming for so many reasons and things. And sometimes I really want to live somewhere else or at a different period. Life means pain at times, just like life means happy, and there is no one person in this world who doesn't suffer sometimes. Even when you get stinged by a jellyfish (I never have myself), it sucks. So you cannot have life without pain, even the little things. And we manage to live with them. That's pretty amazing, thinking how much we have to suffer in life. That we can actually be happy among all that. We have such strength to stand strong and keep living and try to be happy.
On the other hand, I can understand people who want to end their lives. Just because we have so much pain in life, that the happiness doesn't top that.

I'm happy most of the time.

I don't believe that happiness can be reduced to a choice though. To some extent you can choose to be a positive person, but things like mental health, poverty, enviroment and so on make a huge difference. Saying that happiness can be chosen is placing the blaime for a person feeling bad about things they have a very hard time changing. It's NOT just up to you.

I like livingdeadboy's answer - I'm up down, I'm all around. Yep. Sometimes I get dizzy.

🙂

I would say that I *want* to be happy.... I chase happiness. And I love it when I do have it and I miss it when I don't.

As for being happy with who I am.... I'm not sure I really know who I am yet....not to get all existential on your asses ;-) But seeming vs being.... and finding the real authentic me.... It's a journey.

I'm a lot happier with who I am now than when I was growing up. I guess I've grown up. 😉 I think it's an environment thing too. Like the quote says 'Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by assholes.'

A lot of my happiness now has to do with the friends I have, and boyfriend - people who not only accept me for who I am, but really enjoy being around me because of my personality. I'm pretty cool!

I haven't been for years, but right now? Yeah, I think I am experiencing this thing they call "happiness". At the very least I am excited and enthusiastic about what is happening in my life right now. There is obviously aspects that aren't so great, but on the whole, I'm feeling good about things.

I'm usually okay. nor happy or sad. Usually I'm down but then something will make me happy again. it's a back and fourth thing.

I understand where you're coming from. I should have said in my experience. My whole life has been nothing but a string of unfortunate events. During my adolescence, I've lived in poverty, I have been homeless, I've been exposed to hard drugs, I've hopped from house to house, and when my grandmother passed, it left me and my drug addicted mother on the streets to fend for ourselves. If I had dwelled on all the horrible shit that I went through, I would have been in a straitjacket, locked up in a padded room in a mental institution. But in the midst of it all, the most important thing I did was smile. I knew I would live to see another day, and all of this chaos will pass. And it did. So yes, it IS up to you. You have to take the initiative and say, I will not let this or any other obstacle in my life break my spirit. Is it hard? Hell yeah. Is it worth the struggle? Absolutely. It's mind over matter, sweetheart. 🙂

Sounds like you've been through a lot. I'm glad you stayed positive and fought. :) But yeah, as you said, what worked for you doesn't have to work for someone else. Sometimes other things is the most important thing to someone. :)
Pretty surprised I am the only one who put no, but that's just my current state. I feel like I've been in a slump...but I don't expect to be unhappy forever 😛

exactly. everything changes.
Happiness truly is a choice, it's just up to you.

I dont really agree with this for everyone (not saying it doesnt apply for you). When there is a mental illness involved it is not a choice to just be happy.

I am pretty happy where I am in life at the moment. My mood has been pretty stable and I've been able to look after myself. Who knows when it will drop again (also bipolar) but while I am going well I am enjoying it! I have been a bit pissed off with myself sometimes because I dont feel like I am fully appreciating what I have, but now I am aware of the reasons why, I am going to change that. I love my house, my horse, my boyfriend so things are good, I couldnt ask for much more!

I am totally happy with who I am. I love my husband and my dogs. I have a house and I'm in a position that I can help other people sometimes. I have time to be creative and we usually have food to put on the table. It's all good times.

I just take it day by day. The only drawback is that I get sick a lot. Like A lot . . . all the time. But I try not to let that bring me down. It's pretty much the main obstacle to my being totally happy. And it only bothers me when it keeps me from my life . . . and that is pretty rare.

So I said I am happy most of the time. 🙂

I am most of the time. I've always tried to react positively toward things happening to me... But I'm not perfect. 😛 And I agree with Marsh, it's really all in your head. Of course when mental illness is concerned, it's different... I've been around someone who had trouble being happy for a long time due to a mental disorder, and it's very difficult.

Oh, of course, when there's a mental illness involved, there really isn't a choice. I was just talking about people without any disablities, sorry about not clarifying. 🙂
