Ares -- The downloading thing.

So, I might be getting an iPod for my birthday, and my friend has this thing called Ares where you can download things for free of the Internet. Is this...well, LEGAL? I doubted it's non-illegality for the benefit of the doubt for my friend, but I wanna know if I could seriously download stuff free and legally...

I dunno i'm sure it probley is illegal because its a free file sharing site like napster used to be before they got into trouble but i use it and have for a long time now as ashamed as i am to say i but i hardley use it as i dont listen to music much anyways

I think the program is not illegal, just what you could do with it. For example you could download shareware or freeware and that would be okay, but nothing like music. I'm not really sure about internatinal laws, but I think this is how it works here.

I'm not sure, most things are illegal. Your best bet is iTunes, if it's an iPod. If it's an MP3/MP4 I usually use limewire. So, yeah 🙂

Like Social Suicide said, the software itself is legal. It basically allows you and a network of other people using the same software to share files on your own computer. That in and of itself is perfectly legal, so long as you own the rights to the files you're sharing. The rights to stuff like software, games, videos, and music are often not owned by the users who share them. Downloading those files is illegal. And yes, ares is free to download and use. Sharing files (and downloading them) is free too (but in most cases, illegal).

I use Ares and I think it's great. I used to use limewire but it lacked all the obscure songs I like to download (mostly from Buffy) so my friend recommended Ares. I'm not too sure about the legal/illegal issue, but either way it doesn't bother me.

Now, I'm sure they have no problem with us discussing whether we think certain software is legal, so that we can avoid it if it isn't. But it's certainly not supposed to lead to discussion about which software each member of this board uses to illegally download stuff. Moreover, since IPs are tracked, it would be wise not to discuss such matters on public forums such as this one, as the RIAA or the MPAA could potentially demand IPs of people who have admitted to downloading illegally.
