Can we discuss, for just a moment, the horrid
purple shirt
Buffy wears when she goes to break up with Spike?

I mean, honestly, were the wardrobe people mad at SMG for some reason?? Most of the time they did so well by her. She gets all kinds of adorable boots and sweaters and blouses, all the time. And then this. She doesn't look the least bit comfortable in it, the cut is all wrong, and I don't believe for one second Buffy would have bought it, much less worn it out of the house.

Hideous shirt choice! (Is that where Purple Poof gets her name... hehehehe)

It's not as bad as the see-through shirt she wears in "Gone"...

Thankyou! I've always thought this!
It's horrendous!!! I saw it as it aired (I was young) and i just sorta thought "Why is Buffy wearing that?" it was terrible. When I watch it again, I kinda want to hide behind the sofa in hell, you know?

The concept behind the shirt isn't that bad. It was just executed in a horrible fashion.

If there was more fabric over the bust (so it didn't look so narrow), and the shirt was longer, it actually wouldn't be that bad of a shirt. The cuffs of the sleeves need a little work, too. But if that was fixed, the shirt would look kinda cute, although it seems more Willow than Buffy. Maybe Buffy's shirts were all bloodstained and she had to borrow one of Willow's? And Willow does laundry, unlike Buffy, so Willow was the perfect choice. 😉

Speaking of purple and break-ups, didn't she wear purple to break up with Angel, too?

That shirt alwys totally bugged me too... and I always especially hated the closeups they showed of both Buffy and Spike during the breakup scene, they were weird and unflattering to both of them, its all I can think about every time I watch it.

^^^LOL @ fat, although you're right. Maybe they were trying to fit the tone of the scene? *trys to figure out the costume designer's motivation*

EB: Oh yeah, I'm ANCIENT!!! 😛

I have a feeling Sarah had done something to the W.People... Man, she must have pissed them off!
The shirt is horrible! And the colour.. not very good on Sarah. We should have a thread for horrible clothes in the Whedon verse.. That way the see through shirt could be bashed more. Cos it need more baching.

Was it that awful? I always thought it was quite pretty....

*goes to check screencap*

Umm, yeah - not the nicest thing she ever wore afterall...

But looking at the top and taking into account what was happeneing in the scene, I think it was a case of the costumers working with the story. From the time she got back from the dead Buffy had taken to wearing 'gothic' type clothes - lots of lace, leather, chokers, boots, black - this represented her attraction to the dark side, to Spike. Buffy wearing a gothic-ish style in such a light, non-gothic colour supports her actions in the scene; that yes, she recognises that she still has an attraction to the dark but she's actively choosing to walk away. At least that's what it says to me.

I've always disliked that top, but I don't think it's the worst thing Buffy's worn, not by far.

That prize would have to go to this monstrosity:

And I always thought the outfit she wears at the beginning of Same Time, Same Place was a little bizarre.

Well put.

Totally agree that her "Replacement" ensemble is the worst ever!

that one is so bad I'd blocked it out of my memory
Oh.My.God. Well on TV I didn't really pay that much attention to it, but now that you really point it out...it is awful. And I feel really bad for having this blue shirt in my wardrobe that kinda looks a lot like it.

I don't think the purple shirt was too bad.. But it did look weird on her, maybe it would have looked better if she still had her long hair.

I certainly get what they were trying to do with the shirt, but the execution was horrifying. The shape was just all wrong for her. The neckline was too wide, the straight bustline doesn't do anything for her, and the sleeve and shoulder of the thing made her look very stiff and uncomfortable. It might have worked on someone else, but not SMG.

And I like her outfit in The Replacement. Yeah, it's weird color combinations, but at least the shape of it is basically flattering.

Since we're railing on Buffy style (in a loving way, of course), can we discuss the fact that all of her pants were too short for her for at least the first five seasons? If you wear a wide leg pant, which I'm a big fan of, don't get me wrong, it has to be long enough.

caitaintdead, PurplePoof is a guy and he most certainly did not base his username on that horrid monstrosity!

😀

Haha... All in good humor of course! You KNOW it made you laugh!
you guys are funny.

i think season 3 & 4 were buffy's best fashion seasons. the outfits she wore in chosen all had the same color scheme...but she looked hot.

I don't even remember half the wardrobe, not my area really. Maybe the bad shirt was meant to reflect the seriousness of the situation, sort of telling Spike that she isn't joking around. Well it was a break-up appointment so she didn't want to look her best.

You're right. The only joke was the shirt!
