ASL vs Hearing Aids

I'm not hearing impaired but Im really interested in learning Auslan (Australian Sign Language). I know the basics, well I did, its been a while since I have done it. We also use Makaton at work for the disabled kids but I know very little of that since its been so long. It would be really handy to know more for work, I was looking into doing a tafe course in it but looks like I will have to wait until next year.

I don't know if there are any programmes like this in the States/other countries, but I think this is great. Makaton is such a great communication aid for small children/people with learning difficulties.

My little cousin Kyle was born with 90% hearing loss in one ear and 75% hearing loss in the other. His mom and dad worked to teach him both sign language AND how to talk, since he could hear a little out of his left ear. Two years ago, he was approved to get a cochlear implant. It has helped him a LOT, but they refuse to do it on his other ear, since he can still hear a little bit out of it. Before the implant, sign language was his primary form of comunication, but now that he has the implant, he's made great strides in being able to speak and communicate using words.
