What is ASMR?

'Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a neologism for a perceptual phenomenon characterized as a distinct, pleasurable tingling sensation in the head, scalp, back, or peripheral regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, or cognitive stimuli.'

Also referred to as "brain tingles", “bubbles in your head” and "brain-gasm", ASMR is a fairly new phenomenon but has proved to be popular - with hundreds of 'AMSRtists' uploading videos, searching the term ‘ASMR’ on YouTube returns over 1.4 million videos, the most popular of which has been viewed 11.7 million times.

Benefits of ASMR?

Aside from the pleasurable sensation that ASMR offers there are a range of other benefits. Many intentional ASMR videos are essentially forms of guided meditations, meditating regularly has been shown to reduce stress levels, aid concentration and provides temporary relief in mood for those suffering from depression, among many other things.

Additionally people who suffer from insomnia and regularly have difficulty getting to sleep can use ASMR videos to distract and relax them, and send them sleep when nothing else will. Some ASMR videos are designed specifically for this purpose, however if you find videos that include your personal triggers they should all be effective at this.

Common ASMR Triggers

There are some ASMR triggers which you will find reoccur regularly in ASMR videos. Everyone’s personal triggers will vary slightly, what works for other people won’t necessarily work for you - below is a list of the most common triggers that cause tingles.
  • whispering
  • scratching and tapping
  • blowing
  • pages turning in a book
  • hair brushing
  • water spraying sounds
  • personal attention, e.g. a haircut
  • concentration on a task
  • head touching or scalp massage

It should be noted however, that the sensation is not sexual in nature, although outside viewers tend to make that association. It is intimate, and the intimacy is a very common trigger for some.

The science.

I guess what I want to ask is have any of you experienced it? ASMR? Or do you think it's a big load of bull? Have you tried it, did it work, did it not work? I think it's fascinating! Especially the fact that some people experience a stronger sensation than others - but as the article states, as with drugs, individual experiences widely vary. Still though, WTF human bodies, you weirdos.

Bob Ross!! hahaha
I have! I don't get the instant falling asleep that some people do, but it does lull me to sleep. I turn it on when I can't sleep and it does help.

Excellent! I was waiting for someone else to comment first -- I've also used it to help with pregnancy related insomnia. It was the ONLY thing that worked. It is quite weird listening to someone whispering and unwrapping packets and opening lids while you fall asleep, but if it works it works. It really is a fascinating phenomenon.

There's a really good one where it's like a travel agent to space lol. Let me see if I can find it.

It's one of this girl's videos - her's are usually pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/user/ASMRrequests

Haha, thank you! There's a lot of "role playing" in ASMR, isn't there? I think it really adds to the WTFery of it but I guess I don't really mind what the video is about, as long as it's relaxing. It's like entering a new world, clickbait everywhere in the ASMR universe. It's hard to stop sometimes.

Yeah I guess that is very true! The quality of the sound in some videos is astounding. Like you're right in the same room or something. You can hear traffic from their windows, or crickets chirping if it's night. I've always found I go into a very deep sleep with some ASMR at bedtime. It's great!

I love it, it helps me sleep and helps with my anxiety, which is a huge deal for me. I only recently found out about it. I could see how some people could find it too weird, but I like weird, so no big deal. I like the role play sessions ,but I prefer the blowing and ear-to-ear whisper sessions. In any case, it relaxes me greatly.

I guess I've been using it without knowing? I've tried using such videos as relaxation cause I got tinnitus. I didn't really work that great for that, I prefer just having a fan on. Never got that tingly feeling, but it seems interesting. Now that I know about it I might try it.
