OK, so HOPEFULLY, my computer will be fixed this week, which means I can start doing some Digital Art and making videos.

Here is my question.

What are the best, FREE, packages I can download (or at least cheap) for creating art?

What are the best, FREE, packages I can download (or at least cheap) for editing things together?

Where is the best place to find clips online?
Can you put in a DVD and take clips from that?
 
I'm only semi-well versed in the digital art side, so I'll leave the movies to others. First, I have one question - what kind of art do you mean? Are you looking to go down the lines of most people here, making banners, wallpapers, montages etc? Because if so, I believe the best free software out there is GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program. Photoshop (CS2, 3, or 4) is better, if you can get your hands on it, but it's not legally free.

If you're looking for Corel style vector programs, then I don't have a clue. I'll leave that to someone else too.

Screencaps can be easily taken from DVDs, but it's more problematic to get clips. I'm also not sure about the legality of copying the movie files to your HD, I would think it would involve bypassing copyright protection on the disks.
