A vampire slayer is one thing. But a vampire slayer replaced by a robot? Now that's hitting close to home.
With technologies both wearable and mobile constantly connecting us to screens and satellites around the globe, it seems science fiction isn't really fiction anymore. Which is why the ASU Center for Science and the Imagination is raising questions about reality, humanity, and the boundaries surrounding each by turning to the not-so-far-off plot lines of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Okay, fine, the vampire bit is still a stretch.
The ASU Center for Science and the Imagination will discuss Buffy and the gang from 5 to 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8, at the ASU Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication as part of its ongoing Science Fiction TV Dinner Series.
The evening will begin with a free meal and a screening of "Intervention," a season-five episode from Buffy the Vampire Slayer in which the protagonist is replaced with a lifelike robot. Following this special viewing, a conversation will be led by tech operations engineer Bridget Kromhout, Google engineering manager Astrid Atkinson, and ASU associate professor/Buffy super-fan Dawn Gilpin. Together they'll use Joss Whedon's acclaimed show to answer questions about technology, human identity, and what the future holds for both.
