My niece asked: 'Huh? Why has Spike fallen in love with Buffy?'

So, any theories as to why he has at this point fallen for/realised his 'true' feelings for the Buffinator?
This is for my niece obvs, 'cause I think at this point its just his creepy obsession going up a notch.

Because that was the first time he saw Buffy and Riley really fight together, (and he was not let be a part of it) thus in experiencing that he began to covet that feeling of being part of a team (which he hadnt had since the fanged four broke up) therefor began subconsciously coveting Buffy and what she represented.

Define 'in love'. It's a confusing term in my culture. It's sometimes used to refer to the mad, wild attraction, and lust that alone can be the start of wanting to protect someone, even if we don't know them enough to actually love them in a mature lasting way.

Sometimes the term 'in love' is used as in realizing someone we already know is the person we want to be deeply, emotionally involved with.

Those things sometimes occur simultaneously, but not all the time. And they can be awfully hard to tease apart.

Maybe harder to tease apart for a vampire who by definition is a slave to physical lust for sex, blood, and violence and who by self definition is "love's bitch"

Spike lusted for emotional connection as much as he did for physical. It's the way he was wired.

I think Spike had feeling for her starting in "Buffy vs. Dracula", in which Spike expressed his concern/dismissal/annoyment about the idea of Briley.

It became more or less apparent in "The Replacement". Spike watched and touched the face of Buffy model for several seconds with mixed hatred and intimacy.

As for "why", I guess it's because the monks' Dawn fake memory inplantation. Buffy suddenly became one of the mother-figures, who are always Spike's cups of tea, or to be more polite, weak spots. (his own mother and Joyce are earlier examples)

I tend to see it as the opposite. I don't think there was a reason. I think there was an incredible attraction. It was after the dream, after the horrible realization in that dream, that Spike began watching Buffy and seeing her in a different light. It's obvious that he cared deeply for her, after taking the torture from Glory. It was obvious she began to trust him - asking him to protect the two people she held most dear.

I think the dream was a whole lot of subconscious stuff - and it was the dream that intrigued him, obsessed him, triggered his falling in love. Love's bitch - he couldn't walk away from his own dream.
