I like Season 8 the best, simply because it seems to be more orderly with its seperate arcs and standalone issues. ATF is one long continuing muddled up mess. I think that, once the entire "season" of Angel is done, it will bw possible to sit down and read the entire series and make a WHOLE lot more sense of just what's going on, but for now, there's just too little real detail per issue and too much time between issues.

After the Fall for me - I like how the story is faster paced, to me it seems more like the continuation of the series, I love the art, and it has had a huge emotional impact on me - twice I have burst into tears while reading it. And hey, my boys are there (see my avi <)

It keeps flipping back and forth to me.
After reading the third trade paperback of Buffy, I'm going to go with S8 for now. But ATF is definitely a close second and after it's finished I'm almost positive I'll prefer it over BTVSS8.

I have been reading both and honestly, I have no bloody idea what is going on in After the fall. I think the writing - not necessarily the plot but the dialogue is just awful. And they keep trying to do those "film style" bridges that were so common in BTVS and Angel but it just doesn't work in comic form.
When I started to read Season 8 I actually broke into tears and laughter at the same time. Tears because I had missed new Buffy stories so much and Laughter because I could actually hear the actors voices in my head - they captured the series beautifully.
I did like the 4 part Spike - After the fall but I just don't like a bunch of the story line ideas.
1. Angel tames the dragon? C'mon.
2. Gunn as a Vampire? Whose idea was that?
3. Don't like Wesley's new role.
4. How did Mina end up semi-bad and against Angel?
5. Bringing back Fred is just inconsistant with what was explained in the show.
And the art leaves a lot to be desired. Angel looks like Elvis the majority of the time. Get him a velour suit and send him to Las Vegas again.
I haven't given up on it and maybe, as one person mentioned it will all be clear when the series ends but I'm bored now!
As far as Season 8, I'm enjoying it although it has some flaws and I think it would be a lot better if it were the same artists for every book. And it needs more FAITH.

1. I'll give you that he wouldn't have in the series due to budgetary constraints on TV, but in the book it's no more far fetched than Angel having a son.
2. Joss had been planing that since before he learned the show was canceled, Gunn was meant to be S6's Big Bad (or one of them).
3. I'm not a fan of Wes being a Ghostly Liaison either, but then neither are Angel or Wes 😛.
4. I think you mean Nina? She's neither of those things. She's semi-werewolf 24/7 now because the moon is out 24/7 and its a hell dimension.
She's far from being against Angel. She doesn't love that he broke up with her, but she outright talks about her loyalty to him, and how she worked with Connor so she could feel like she was doing something for Angel.
5. You really have to catch up on the issues, because [spoilers]it is explained that Fred is dead, Fred's emergence was simply Illyria wanting to act like Fred in order to get closer to Wes & Spike, it has been one of the largest plot points thus far[/spoilers]
I have the same objections to both comics: their scope is too large. The banter was the best part of the show and neither book has the core characters interacting nearly as much as they used to.

I appreciate the breakdown but I just don't want to work so hard to enjoy a comic book. And the dragon thing is just bloody stupid and inconsistant with the tone of the shows.

Season 8 because ATF is confusing me. The one thing I didn't like about Season 8 was the whole Fray storyline. I could have done without that.

I know what you mean. I try to read the AtF issues twice (once when released, then right before I read the following one), and I still can't keep it straight some times. I guess that kind of meshes with Angel the series though. I love the show & the the characters, but Angel lost his way fairly often, partly, because, as he put it:
"You want to know what my problem is? I'm screwed.
That's my problem. I can't win. I'm trying to atone for a hundred
years of unthinkable evil. News flash! I never can! Never
going to be enough. Now I got Wolfram and Hart dogging me, it's too
much! Two hundred highly intelligent law-school graduates working fulltime
driving me crazy. Why the hell is everyone so surprised that it's
working? But no, it's 'Angel, why you're so cranky?' 'Angel, you
should lighten up. You should smile. You should wear a nice
plaid.'"
So I guess us feeling confused by the plot direction kind of shows us how Angel feels, I think he's pretty confused too. And like it or not, without St. Cordy by his side 24/7, it's even harder for him, because at the very least, she was his connection to tptb.
While I enjoyed the Fray arc, I don't like the implications of it, similarly to what Buffy said actually. We watch Buffy put all this effort into forming the new Watcher's Council, and unless Fray lives in an AU, we know that while Buffy probably does win the current Apocalypse, the New Watcher's Council becomes an utter failure and her best friend becomes a Big Bad.
If Illyria's time slips aren't AU either, we can also assume that Spike lives into Fray's time line, and is partly responsible for giving Fray the Scythe...
So if we believe Fray's time line, Illyria's Time slips, tptbs & W&H's visions we pretty much know:
1.) Buffy & Angel win the Apocalypse & banish evil.
2.) Angel may lose his mind a little while doing it, but eventually Shanshu-s into a human (we see him middle-aged in one slip).
3.) While they are victorious in the short term, the future world is pretty crappy, more dystopia than utopia (and seemingly worse than 21st Century America)
4.) Willow becomes evil.
5.) The Watcher's Council becomes crazy, far worse than it was under Quintin.
6.) Spike is possibly the only Champion in the world between Angel & Buffy's death until Fray's calling.
Season Eight.
I'm not even going to try to read ATF. It sounds stupid as hell and the last two seasons
of ANGEL on TV were bad enough, like I want anything extra to pack onto that crap fest!

Lol, I just think it's funny that you named yourself after an episode that you consider to be part of a "crap fest" hahaha.
But no, if you didn't like the last two seasons of Angel you wouldn't like After the Fall

I just bought ATF vol 1, which is the first 5 issues, and I'm not only confused entirely, but I got less interested in reading as I flipped through it. The only reason I finished reading it is because I'm OCD and can't leave it half-finished.

Buffy for me. I always liked it more than Angel. Add to the fact that I dont really like the art on Angel, so its hard for me to get into the issues and I just dont like how majority of the cast is gone.

Angel after the fall for me. Not brilliant by any means, but i can accept in as a continuation, it fits well into the angel universe i know. Season 8 on the other hand is a mess, a million miles from what i know as Buffy. If this had been on tv, i'm pretty sure, i would have turned it off.

I actually didn't like the first two seasons of Angel the series. I barely watched it until the third season. I actually enjoyed the last three seasons of Angel better than I did the first two seasons of Angel. I also thought that S5 of Angel was better for the most part than S7 of Buffy.
As far as the comics are concerned. I find ATF okay. I loved the Spike: ATF series. In fact, I have enjoyed Spike Shadow Puppets and Asylum more than the Angel: AFT series. I just think that the writers have a hard time with finding the voice for the Joshverse characters. But in Shadow Puppets and Asylum we are introduced to new characters (Beck, Tok, Beta George, etc.,) and they are done very well. I think S8 is better than ATF but not by much. Season 8 appears to be ignoring a lot of things that happened in prior seasons. Why is Warren back? Why are Dawn and Buffy still spinning their wheels with the same problems they had in S6 & S7? In a year and a half Xander moves from being shocked unconscious by a 16 year old girl to running a world wide operation like he's Nick Fury. Give me a break.
Joss once said in a commentary or an interview that the reason that Buffy was not filmed in the ratio for widescreen, with the exception of OMWF, is that the show was meant for television. That's why he used that aspect ration instead of the one for widescreen. I just think that Buffy and Angel are meant for television. I wish that instead of doing comics, they would have focused on doing dvd movies similar to Farscape and Stargate SG-1.
