Based on an idea from Wesley Jr, we've been developing a fan fiction set in an alternate version of Season 4 where Xander is recruited by the Initiative. Here's the story so far:
"I'm back in town!" Xander exclaimed. After a failed cross-country trip, it was good to be back in Sunnydale with a repaired vehicle. He returned home pleased to have a functioning vehicle, but not pleased with the outcome.

"Back already?" Xander's mother said, seemingly annoyed at his son's return.
"Yea, car broke down. I'll be in my room."
"Not so fast," Xander's mother stopped him. "That room's being rented. If you'd like to stay here, we have the basement available."
"Seriously?"
"Yes, seriously."
"Fine - bill me in the morning, I'm going to lie down." Xander took all his belongings and wandered down into the basement. It was a pit with damp floors, gray walls, and minimal lighting. It'll have to do, he thought to himself. This is my new life, paying rent in my own home.

After unpacking and getting mildly settled, Xander left for the Bronze. The joys of having your own enterance and uncaring parents, Xander thought, I don't have to tell anyone where I'm going. He arrived to find Buffy, sulking.

"What's the matter?" Xander asked.
"Nothing," Buffy said, "It's just...too much. College. Classes. Slaying. A girl can only handle so much. Great job, Buffy, Xander comes home on a whirlwind cross-country adventure and all I can do is pout."
"Yea, about that...it didn't happen."
"What?"
"Car broke down in Oxnard. After a month of work at 'Ladies' Night' I was able to afford the repairs to get back."
"Isn't that a male stri..."
"I don't want to talk about it!" Xander said cutting off Buffy. "Besides, let's go back to talking about you instead of this pathetic little man who has to pay his parent's rent to live at his childhood home. You can do it, you can do it all. You're a superhero, not an ancillary player like me."
"You're right! I can do anything. Thanks, Xander. Let me tell you..." I stopped listening. I knew she needed help and before I knew it I was at an abandoned frat with Willow, Oz, and Buffy stopping some vampires. I mostly watch and get beaten on. That's my role, Xander thought, the helpless backup to Buffy.

After returning to Buffy's dorm, Xander left frustrated. He couldn't fight like Buffy, he wasn't as brainy as Willow, he wasn't as badass as Oz. He had no job, no money, no school, nothing to define him. Xander just was. Xander felt a lack of purpose as he walked home with his head down.

That's when he ran into a man in military fatigues.

"Hello, young man," the man said.
"Hey," Xander said, brushing the guy off.
"Have you ever thought of joining the military? I see you could have some great potential, especially with your...knowledge of certain things."
"What things."
"Oh, you know. Here's my card. Give me a call and we can discuss some of the opportunities we can provide you."

Xander looked at the card as he walked away. General Adam Forrest, Initiative.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the next few days, Xander kept the card in his pocket and looked it over, and over again. How would he respond to General Forrest's offer? What did his offer even mean?

Xander decided not to tell anyone about the offer. Not his parents who wouldn't care and would have probably laughed at the notion. Not Buffy, Willow, or Giles who would have had their concerns about it. But in this situation, Xander didn't want to hear any of them. He wanted to make this decision on his own. He wanted to have control over this decision, this part of his life; he wanted to be empowere and he feared that they would hold him back from making a decision that could change his miserable basement-dwelling life for the better.

But what if it goes wrong, he thought. What if he gets killed in action with his body blown into a million pieces? Or, worst yet, what if he fails military training and becomes a laughing stock to a group of macho military cadets who have more than what it takes to serve their country in comparsion to a skinny little wimp like him?

But what if he doesn't and he misses his chance for greatness. Xander knew what he had to do. He picked up the phone and dialed the number on the card.

"Hello, General Forrest. This is Xander Harris. I'd like to meet you to discuss your offer."
"Perfect, meet me at 1420 Fleet Street at 0800 hours tomorrow morning. You will not be sorry, Harris," the General said.
"Thank you, Sir. I look forward to our meeting." Xander hung up the phone. He felt relieved. He felt content. He felt...empowered. He was going to better himself, by himself. This was the opportunity he needed and he jumped on it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xander arrived at the place at 8:00. It looked like an abandoned building with the General standing out in front.

"Mr. Harris, glad you could join us. Come inside and we can go through the basics." Xander followed the General into an elaborate facility with young men training all around; giving their all to learn how to defend themselves and the nation from threats that Xander could not even imagine.

Xander followed the General to his office and sat down. He was surrounded by medals and plaques of recognition. This man was good.

"Let's get down to brass tacks. We're a branch of the military who's focus is on hostile sub-terrestrials," said the General.
"Hostile sub...what?" Xander asked.
"Demons. We hunt, capture, and protect the nation from the threat of demons. With your background working alongside the Slayer, your knowledge of the supernatural world, and your lack of a current income source make you a prime candidate to join us in our quest. We need fit, young men who are willing to serve their nation and protect the world from the threat of HSTs."
"HS...oh, I get it."
"I thought you would. Bottom line - we're demon hunters and trackers looking for a few good men. You in?"
"Well, I have to think about it. I don't know."
"Mr. Harris, may I ask you a personal question?"
"Sure," Xander said.
"Are you happy with your station in life?" the General already knew the answer to that question. "If you're not happy with your station in life, there are a few ways to fix that. You can go to school, get an education, and get a high paying job. Or, if you join us we can pay for that education whereever you'd like to go, provide you with a source of income, and provide you with extensive training."

Xander told the General he would think about it. "Mr. Harris, see me in 24 hours exactly yes or no, period. We need to know the answer, Mr. Harris."

Xander had to meet some friends at the Rocket Cafe. He'd have to think about this, seriously think it through. Maybe he'd ask the gang. Xander arrived to find Willow, Oz, and Buffy.

"Hey! Say hi to non-college guy. Just thought I'd come around and check on my girls." Xander said, slapping Oz's right leg.
"Not that I mind, but don't non-college guys usually populate the non-campus?" Buffy asks. She then goes into a discussion on the evils of her college roommate. Xander didn't care, that comment cut like a knife. She was right. He wasn't a college student. He wasn't much of anything. The General had offered him something that he could use - an income, a job, and a chance to become a more useful member of the group. He knew his answer - he left the Rocket Cafe early and went right to the General's office.

Xander knocked on the General's door. "Sir, I'm in."
"Welcome aboard, recruit."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xander's first day began as any first day - with him being tossed to the wolves. He just didn't expect it to be so literal.

"Be ready!" Riley yelled, "You are all new recruits and first things first - we need to see if you can handle this."
Xander was beginning to question if he could.
"In this room are two, wild wolves. Werewolves to be more specific. You each have a hand weapon - kill them."
Xander didn't know what to do - he hasn't killed a werewolf. He's actually friends with a werewolf. "Uhm...Sir...Riley is it? Why are we killing these werewolves?"
Riley gave him a confused look and walked right into Xander's face, "These two creatures are not human, they're monsters, and each one has killed a number of small children." Riley backed off, "Is that enough reason?"
"Sir, yes sir!" Xander replied. He wasn't ready - he knew he wasn't ready. But, the next thing he knew there he was - in a small room with two other new recruits and two wild wolf-critterrs.

"They don't look so tough," Xander said. The two werewolves growled. "On second thought."

With that, the first recruit barrelled towards the werewolves, swinging his arms and his weapon wildly. It was a silver-tipped short sword. He thought it would do the trick. The first wolf was crouching and leapt onto the recruit, pinning him to the ground. The other guarded as the werewolf began to rip at the recruit's face.

"Stop!" yelled the second recruit, a young man named Jason. He began going forward towards the werewolves. Xander was frozen for a moment. He didn't know what to do. He was facing certain death what was he going to do.

He looked around and saw some meat placed on the ground. He snuck towards it and waved it about, "Here were-puppies. Nice were-puppies."

The two werewolves were instantly mesmorized by the bloody meat. He chucked it into the corner and they lost track of what they were doing.

Xander and Jason pulled up the first recruit. His face was a bloody mess, he had passed out from the loss of blood. Jason looked to Xander. "While they're distracted?"
"While they're distracted." The two jumped at the werewolves, taking them handily.

Xander and Jason came out of the room victorious. They had outsmarted and defeated the two werewolves. Xander was proud that he figured it out and the General, who was standing nearby, seemed fairly pleased too. He was standing next to a cold woman. He didn't know it yet, but she was the key to this organization and was the General's boss. That would have to wait. For now, Xander was receiving high fives and congratulations from Riley and the other members.

That's when he realized - where did the third guy go? He looked around and the first recruit was gone. But, Xander quickly lost track as he went back to the group - ready to begin his full training as a new member of the Initiative.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the next few weeks, Xander became distant with the gang. He was rarely around with all his training, he showed up late when invited to trips to the Bronze or parties. Then again, no one seemed to care. With Buffy, Willow, and Oz so focused on school and settling in on their own, the lack of Xander and changes in his behavior went mostly unnoticed. He didn't care, he was focused. He was training. He was learning so much, so fast. At first it was overwhelming, but Xander relished the opportunity to learn more about HSTs and how he can help defeat the menace.

Anya had not heard from Xander since Graduation. She wanted to see Xander. She wanted to figure out their relationship. She wanted...Xander. So she decided to surprise Xander. She showed up at his place and waited for hours.

And hours.

And hours.

A door opened. "Xander!" Anya said, "What is the status of our relationship?"
Xander walks through the door - shirtless, sweaty, and tired. "What relationship?"
"Xander, I need to know where things are going or we could be through!"
"We?"
Anya just stood, annoyed at him and tried to shake her head and look away, but she couldn't. His weeks of working out have been working for him. She didn't know how or why, but she knew one thing - Xander looked good and she liked it.

She began to storm off saying, "This isn't over." She walked out with a lingering stare as she closed the door.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy and Willow were walking to class when they realized something. "We haven't seen Xander in a while. I wonder where our college free friend is and how his new job's going."
"Yea," Willow said, "He's been away quite a bit lately, really busy with his new job." She thought for a moment. "Hey Buffy."
"Yea?"
"Do you know what Xander's new job actually is?"
"No, I assumed it was something embarassing, hence the lack of us knowing."

Buffy spied Parker across the quad. She kept glancing at him as they walked. "Will you just talk to him?" Willow said.
"In time, in time," Buffy said. Parker noticed her too and walked over.

"Hey," Parker said.
"Hey," Buffy said, blushing.
"There's a costume party tonight, you should come. Bring your friend." He hands Buffy a flier and walks off.

"We're going. It'll be epic and collegy and fun with cute boys. What else do we need?" Buffy said. "Oh, and hey, let's ask Xander to come!"
"Perfect," Willow said, "Let's do it."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xander decided to go to the party. He hadn't been out in a while and the Initiative told him he could have the night off from training. He wanted a date, he wanted to show off when he went to the party. Lucky for him, Anya was waiting at his door soon after he got home from training.

"What are you doing tonight?" Anya asked.
"Party, you're coming, wear something pretty," Xander said with a smile. He'd never been that forceful talking to a woman. He liked it.

Apparently so did Anya as she got a big grin and ran off. He liked Anya, she was sweet, she was a demon at one point, but she was adorable and awkward...Xander liked it.

Xander got ready and picked up Anya at 8:00. She looked gorgeous. "You look amazing," Xander said, "Let's go."

Xander and Anya arrive arm in arm at the door at the same time as Buffy and Parker...and Spike and Harmony. Buffy looks at Xander and Anya, then looks at Spike and Harmony, then bursts into laughter.
"Wow! You lose a bet?" Buffy says to Spike.
"Ha ha, love," Spike smirks then he and Harmony bolt away from the door.

Buffy gives Parker a kiss on the cheek. "I'll be right back, go ahead on in." Buffy then casually walks about half a block away then bolts after Spike and Harmony. Xander looks at Anya, then at Buffy running off. "Anya?" Xander says.
"Yes, Xander?"
"I need to attend to the...vampire issue with Buffy. I will be back shortly and then, we will have a wonderful time," Xander says, smiling.
Anya looks annoyed for a moment, but couldn't stay angry for long. Xander grabbed her suddenly and kissed her. He then followed after Buffy.

When Xander got to Buffy, he found Harmony standing to the side watching Spike and Buffy fighting. Xander stood by for a moment and pulled a steak from out of his boot. Harmony jumps up cheering as Spike slugs Buffy in the jaw. Mid-air, the steak strikes her in the chest and she instantly turned to dust. Buffy stopped for a moment, shocked at the disappearing Harmony. Just long enough for Spike to grab up something from Harmony's dust and bolts. Something was in that dust that he needed, but Xander couldn't see what it was. He was about to run after her when Buffy held him back. "Hold on there super good aim boy. That was a crazy fast throw right in the heart. Where did you learn to do that?"
Xander looks at her and smirks, "Practice, how else? I want to be more helpful instead of being Mr. Stand in the back and hope I don't die...guy."
Buffy was satisfied with that answer. Good, Xander thought, he did not want to tell her about the training, the Initiative, or anything yet. He'll tell her when he's ready, but for now - it's his secret and he intends to keep it that way.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xander rejoined Anya and took her to the party. They had a good time. At the end of the night, Xander returned to Anya to her place and she invited him in. Xander accepted.

The next morning, Xander kissed Anya at 0500 and said that he would call her that evening. Xander was ready to get back to work, ready to learn more, ready to pick up some new skills. He was happy with this new opportunity. He was happy with his new girl. He was happy with this new life.

So I don't really know fan fiction that well but one I thing I noticed was that there were parts that went from first person to third person. Maybe utilize italics when we are in Xander's first person thoughts?

Wesley, Jr. and I continued putting the overall plot together for our alternate season 4. Here's what we've gotten so far:
Xander's focus on helping Buffy makes Anya feel neglected and Buffy questions herself after having sex with Parker who treats the whole thing like it was meaningless and gives her the cold shoulder. Xander helps Buffy track down the location of Spike's hideout where he is keeping the Gem of Amarra. Buffy ends up taking the Gem of Amarra from Spike and decides to give it to Angel so he can take care of. When Xander returns to Anya, Anya tries to make a stand by telling Xander that she's over him. But Xander changes her mind by having sex with her. Buffy and the Scoobies are noticing Xander's new aggressive behavior but Buffy isn't worried by it and sees it as a nice refreshing change with Xander being more active in the teamwork.

-------------------------------------------------

At Buffy's dorm, the gang discusses their plans for Halloween and decide to go to a party at the Alpha-Delta House. They decide they should invite Xander, who they haven't seen much of since Buffy and Xander had tracked down Spike. Buffy, Oz, and Willow plan to go, but Buffy, seeing Parker, decides that she can't as she thinks Giles needs her for some patrolling. Giles tells, in a chipper mood, tells her to go out and enjoy herself and not to worry about him.

Xander decides to attend the party, as he had the night off from his own patrolling with the Initiative. Anya confronts Xander that night asking about the status of their relationship, Xander says, "You're mine, any other questions?" and kisses her. He then tells her that they're going to a costume party together, and showing up fashionably late.

Prior to the Party, Oz and his band are planning on playing the party. The Frat brothers paint a symbol they saw in a book on the ground, a demonic symbol which can, if it tastes blood, call up a specific demon. Oz, cutting himself on some equipment, provides the symbol with the blood it needs to summon the fear demon, Gachnar.

Buffy arrives at the party as Little Red Riding Hood and meets Willow (as Joan of Arc) with Oz dressed as GOD (with a nametag that says...God). Soon, at the party, everyone's fears begin to become reality and mahem begins to take hold. The Halloween decorations begin coming to life as the gang tries to find their way through the maze and find a way out.

Xander and Anya arrive at the party dressed as James Bond and a random Bond girl. When they arrive, they notice there's no door. When they look in the window, they see the mayhem inside as the window suddenly disappears. Xander assesses the situation briefly then pulls a radio out from inside his suit. He contacts Initiative HQ and tells them of the situation quickly over the radio. Anya is puzzled by the encounter and continues to ask Xander who he's talking to. Xander says, "People who can help us figure this out."

An Intiative team arrives at the house and Xander tells them of the situation. He tells Anya to stay outside while he goes inside the house with the team. Anya refuses, afraid of what may happen to Xander and curious to know more about these people that are helping Xander.

Like Buffy, Willow, and Oz, Xander, Anya, and the Initiative team become lost in the maze. But Xander somehow gets to the coat room where things seem to be normal unlike the rest of the house. Anya joins him and found a book used by one of the frat boys that says the sign on the floor is the Mark of Gachnar. Xander comes up with the idea to destroy the symbol thinking that it would bring this whole nightmare to an end. However, destroying the symbol brings forth Gachnar. Just when Xander was getting himself ready for a fight, it turns out Gachnar is the size of a small action figure. Xander squashes him with his foot and things goes back to normal. Xander tells Anya to go see if everyone else is okay. While she is off doing that, Xander radios the Initiative team inside the house telling them that the situation is secured and to go back to the base. He then takes out a bag to scoup up what remains of the demon for study back at the Initiative base.

Afterwards, Xander, Buffy, Anya, Willow, and Oz go to Giles' place to hang with him and eat some candy. Giles reads over the book Anya found at the house and pointed out that the picture of Gachnar had a Gaelic inscription that translates to, "Actual size." Xander receives a phone call from Riley telling him that the people at the base are proud of his work and inform Xander that soon he'll be injected with the vitamin regiment to make him a full member of the Initiative team. Xander is curious about what the regiment may do to him. Anya brings up Xander's radio to Buffy and Willow and talks about these friends of Xander's that came by. Buffy and Willow have no idea what Anya is talking about and turns to Xander, demanding to know what's going on with him these days. The episode ends with Xander trying to find the right words.

-------------------------------------------------

The General summons Xander to his office, and is met by Riley and Professor Walsh. Walsh explains that Xander was selected to take part in some experimental treatments which, if successful, will increase his strength, stamina, and intelligence. They are an experimental vitamin regiment that has proven successful thus far with Riley, who's been on the regiment for 6 months now with no side effects (according to Walsh). Riley then displays his superhuman strength in a demonstration. Xander watches awestruck and says, "Where do I sign?"

Buffy asks Willow if she thinks Xander's been acting weird. After the strange encounter and Anya's comments, she thinks that they need to investigate. Willow thinks she's overreacting trying to throw herself into something seemingly huge to make her forget that Parker hurt her feelings. Buffy disagrees and storms off. She goes to Giles to ask him and finds Anya already there. She's been asking Giles if he'd heard of any sneaky organizations in the area speacializing in the supernatural. His response? Nope. With his connections to the Watcher's Council depleted, he's not heard any news of anything new coming into the area or of any other organizations based in Sunnydale. He suggests just asking Xander if they have questions. Neither of them like the idea, but say they'll do it. They both leave Giles' place and each, independent of the other, think to themselves, I'm going to stalk Xander and figure this out.

Xander is adapting well to the vitamin regiment - and quickly develops super strength and speed. In a scene that will seem incredibly outrageous, Xander is running in a wind tunnel with knives being thrown at him from what appears to be a pitching machine - he dodges or catches each of them. The last one, he catches in his teeth. They turn off the aparatus and Professor Walsh opens the door saying, "Very good, Xander! You have taken well to the treatments. You are one of my finest pupils. I'm so proud of your progress." She smiles at him and walks away saying, "Keep up the good work and you may surpass Riley as our star pupil." Xander is seen beaming, very obviously glad to have the approval of Professor Walsh.

That night, Xander is going out to investigate a potential disturbance near a neighborhood bar. He was told there was potential HST activity in that area. Anya is dressed in all black with black greasepaint on her face hanging out outside of the bushes near Xander's place. She watches as he walks and creeps behind him...not very sneakily. Buffy, on the other hand, is dressed normal for her and watching from the trees. She glides down and stalks, very quietly. Xander hears a rustling in the bushes nearby. He reaches for a weapon he has in his holster. The movement stops and we pan to Anya in the bushes, breathing heavily and hiding. He then keeps on moving.

Anya starts running after him and bumps into Buffy. "What are you doing here?" the two say in unison towards one another. "Nevermind that, worried about Xander?" Buffy asks. "Yea, he's been acting strange since he got that new job he still won't tell me about. He better not be cheating on me, or I'll kill him. Seriously, I still have connections." Buffy shakes her head, "I know it's not that, Xander may love the ladies but the ladies don't necessarily love him back...except for you, and Cordelia, and Willow for a little while..." Awkward moment before the two decide to work together to stalk Xander.

Xander reaches the bar and sees a number of the patrons acting out, throwing furniture and generally acting like animals. Their faces look cave-man-esque, (not Gieco cave-man, traditional Neandertal caveman). Confused by the situation, he radios back saying, "We seem to have some infected citizens. I'll start a quarantine." Xander then enters into the bar. The bartender is hiding behind the bar and the seemingly infected people are fighting one another / trashing the place. They then notice Xander at the door. One of them hurls a table at him. Xander quickly puts his hands up and catches it, "Wow, neat trick. Didn't know I could do that," Xander says, dropping the table and moving towards them. "I'm not here to hurt you," Xander says - as the five men begin to throw objects at Xander hooting and hollering. There's one female among them in the corner, cheering them on. She's also hollering.

Buffy and Anya reach the door and look in, and see...Xander handling the situation. The door's already locked, so they can't enter into the place. They watch as Xander pulls something out from his belt as two of the men rush at him. He handily drops one of them and sprays something in the other one's face, which knocks him out. Anya is watching with her eyes wide open, clearly loving what she's seeing. Buffy just is looking at the whole thing confused, "Who is that and what did he do with our Xander?"

Back inside, show Xander going towards the three remaining men who continue to hurl objects at his head. The girl in the corner is cheering on someone, but no one is sure who at this point. Xander quickly picks up one of the broken table legs and approaches the men, just then - Buffy bursts through a window. "Mind if I join in?" she asks. Xander is clearly susprised by the situation. "Uhm," he manages to get out before a chair strikes him in the back of the head. The three guys leap onto the bar and one of them begins hurling bottles from behind the bar. Buffy rushes towards them and hurls one of them into the wall while Xander hops back up. He then chucks the chair leg which bounces off the head of one man, then striking the other...they fall to the ground. The woman in the corner then rushes to Xander and begins hooting / hollering while stroking his chest. That's when Anya busts through the door.

Anya then punches the girl in the face, knocking her clean out. "Don't touch my man, bitch," she says to the unconscious girl. Xander looks around and thanks them for the help but says that they should probably get going. "What do you mean? Your friends about to arrive?" Buffy asks. "Yes," Xander says flatly, "And, frankly, I'll tell you about them later - but please just going and trust me." Buffy, annoyed, nods and agrees to go. Anya looks up at Xander and jumps him, kissing him. Xander then puts her down, "Anya - we can finish this up later. Please, follow Buffy and trust me. I'll come get you in about an hour." Anya smiles and blushes as she follows Buffy out.

Two Initiates, one of them being Riley Finn, arrive at the scene. "Looks like you handled it pretty well, Xander," Riley said.
Xander's face is stoic. "Thanks, not sure what infected these people, but they appear to be turning to normal."
The other Initiative member finds the magical beer behind the counter - someone had played a trick on the people there at the bar. "Good find," Riley said, "And again, good job, Xander."
Xander looks at Riley and says flatly, "She knows."
"Who knows?" Riley asks.
"The Slayer. We may have a problem."

-------------------------------------------------
The episode opens with Buffy fighting a vampire like always, using him as a punching bag for her anger with Xander who's been lying to her about this job of his that he still hasn't told her about despite promises of telling her soon. Buffy is unaware that she is being watched by Spike who promises to deliver the Slayer some payback before being tazered and carried off by Initiative men.

Meanwhile, Xander meets with Professor Walsh to discuss the matter of Buffy knowing that things aren't on the up and up with him. Walsh has been informed of the situation by Riley who tells Xander it would be better to talk to her about it than with the General. Xander agrees, feeling more comfortable with Walsh than he is with the General. Xander asks for Walsh's permission to tell Buffy about the Initiative, growing sick and tired of keeping secrets from the people closest to him. Walsh gives Xander her permission, not considering Buffy a threat and interested to meet the legendary Slayer that the Initiative has been hearing about during their recon and intelligence gathering. After Xander leaves, a fellow scientist involved in the Initiative and Walsh's partner emerge from the other side of the room where he has been listening in on Walsh's conversation with Xander per her request. Walsh and the scientist talk about the fact that the Slayer knows and if she may pose a future danger to the Project they have been working on. Walsh doesn't think so as long as they have Xander in their corner defending what the Initiative stands for and they give Buffy as much limited information they could provide to keep her clueless about the project's existence.

Xander joins Buffy and the gang at the Bronze where they talk about college and why they're still hanging out at the Bronze. To their surprise, Giles joins them. Xander takes the moment to take Buffy aside to finally tell Buffy about his involvement with the Initiative. Xander tries to convince her that the organization is a bunch of good guys fighting to protect the innocent from monsters like what she does for a living. He also reveals what they've done for him like the treatments he's been undergoing, the vitamin regiment, that's been making him stronger, faster, and sharper mentally. Buffy is concerned about the treatments, wondering if there are any dangerous side-effects from them or if the Initiative may be brainwashing Xander somehow through the treatments. Buffy wants to meet the people he works for face-to-face and Xander gives into her insistence, telling her he'll set up the meet. At that moment, the band "Shy" led by a sensual singer named Veruca begins to play. All the guys are mesmerized by her singing which distresses Willow when it turns out Oz is one of those guys.

The following morning, Willow and Oz talk about being apart for three nights while there's a full moon. At school, Buffy has her meeting with Professor Walsh arranged by Xander who's also in the room to act as a referee if need be. Walsh openly admits that she is not very impressed by Buffy's "adequate" means of fighting supernatural threats. Buffy defends herself by going over all the kinds of monsters she's fought, killed, and survived to tell the tale. Buffy asks Walsh her share of questions about the organization to know for sure if there's a chance of risk for Xander's wellbeing. Walsh answers each of them with grace and points out that Xander is a grown man who made a choice to join the Initiative without any outside influence and that Buffy should be proud of him and respecting of his choice. The meeting comes to an end with Walsh considering making Buffy an asset to the organization with Xander's help. As Buffy and Xander walk out of Walsh's office, Buffy bumps into Riley who Buffy finds out from Xander is a part of the Initiative. Buffy and Riley's eyes meet and an attraction is sparked between them which Xander isn't blind to. Buffy and Riley shake each other's hands and chat a bit with each other even after Xander leaves them to give the two some room.

Veruca invites Oz to sit with her at lunch and Oz agrees since there is room for Willow who he is waiting for. The two of them talk amps and Willow becomes lost in their terminology once she joins them, making the evening awkward. Willow talks to Buffy about the awkwardness of lunch and Buffy tells Willow not to worry about it. She also tells her about the Initiative Xander is involved with and ask Willow if she can use her computer-hacking skills to find everything she can on the Initiative which means accessing restricted government computer databases. Willow says she'll give it a try.

On the first night of the full moon, Oz breaks free of his cage in the crypt and jumps out at Professor Walsh as she is leaving the school. Another werewolf appears and the two of them fight each other while Walsh goes to the bushes to hide. When it's morning, Oz wakes up to discover that the other werewolf is Veruca. Even more so after this revelation, Oz feels something for Veruca that appeals to the animal inside him. This feeling makes Oz distant to Willow when she shows up at his place.

Buffy and Giles talk about the two werewolves that shown up on campus and Buffy turns to Oz in case he knows anything about it. But Oz says he doesn't remembering anything that happened after he got out. Willow goes to Xander about her situation with Oz, desperate for a male perspective. Xander tells Willow to talk to Oz and work it out between each other.

On the second night of the full moon, Oz meets up with Veruca in the crypt with the offer of locking her with him in the cage so no one can get hurt. Veruca makes the moves on Oz which leads to them getting locked up in the cage together but not in the way Oz expected. Willow finds Oz and Veruca naked in each other's arms in the next morning. Oz sees Willow in the room, puts on his pants, and tells Veruca to go away so he can talk to Willow alone. Oz tries to explain what happened but Willow refuse to hear any of it and gets even more upset when Oz doesn't answer her question, if Oz loves Veruca more than her in the animal way. Willow walks off in a daze and walks in front of an oncoming car. Buffy is unable to save her but Xander and Riley, who happen to be there, come to Willow's rescue. Buffy and Xander take Willow to the dorm. Buffy leaves Willow with Xander as she goes to take care of Veruca. Buffy is forced to work with Oz needing his heightened senses to find Veruca. But all they were able to find were her clothes. They both realize that Veruca is coming after Willow. Back at the dorm, Willow tells Xander that she needs a drink and while he leaves the room to get one, Willow leaves the dorm to go to one of the campus labs. There, she attempts to conjure a spell to make Oz and Veruca suffer for what they did to her but she can't bring herself to complete the spell. That's when Veruca enters, locking the door behind her so no one can come in and stop her from becoming a werewolf when the sun goes down so she can tear Willow to pieces. With Willow dead, Veruca will have Oz all to herself. But in the nick of time, Oz breaks into the lab and fights with Veruca once they turn into werewolves. Oz kills Veruca and is prevented from attacking Willow when Buffy arrives and tranquilizes him. Willow cries in Buffy's arms.

The following morning, Willow finds Oz packing. Oz decides to leave Sunnydale, seeing no future for him and Willow as long as he can't control the animal inside him and needing time to figure it out. Oz tells Willow she is the only one he has ever loved and drives away in his van. Before he could leave Sunnydale, Oz is stopped by Xander who mysteriously appears in front of the van in the middle of a deserted road. Oz asks Xander why he is here and Xander casually plays it off like he just wanted to say goodbye to him personally before tazering Oz in the neck. Once Oz is rendered unconscious, an Initiative team emerge from the shadows to carry Oz to the base while getting rid of the van so there'll be no trace of Oz being abducted. Xander told Walsh about Oz being a werewolf, suspecting that he was one of the werewolves on campus. Her interest peaked; Walsh gave Xander the task of obtaining Oz so he can be a subject to the Initiative's ânon-lethal" program. As Oz is being carried off, Xander tells him stoically, "This is for Willow."
