August 6-10 Discussion Group: Angel 4.02 "Ground State"

What were your thoughts on the beginning of this thread? Young girl being abandoned by her parents at a school in Wisconsin. Were you shocked (heh) by how the prelude ended?

Gwen was a rather interesting and complex character. What emotions does she evoke in you? Anger/pity/awe/sadness?

Thoughts on Gwen and Angel's interaction in the elevator and the affect it had on Angel?

Did you think Angel was foolish in seeking out Dinza to find Cordelia? Should he have taken that risk? Do you believe he was too accepting after he found her whereabouts?

To me, the Lilah/Wesley relationship is similar to Spike/Buffy in BtVS S6. Agree/Disagree?

I was pretty entralled by how the prelude ended with the toy car being all melted, that was pretty cool and reminded me of a mix of Rogue and Storm from X-Men.

Gwen was a character I felt had a real punk like spark🙂D) and I wish she was used more, but with her later getting with Gunn I was a little put off by that, it seemed a little out of character, she lost some of her coolness after that.

I see the similarities between Wesley/Lilah and Spike/Buffy, but there are a lot of contrasts, If I were going to compare Wesley/Lilah with any BtVS relationship it would be Spike/Harmony but without the humor. As neither Wesley or Spike really wanted their partners, instead they were just filling in for someone else, Lilah substituting for Fred, and Harmony for Buffy.

I thought of Rogue right away when I saw Gwen, too!

I never thought of comparing Wes/Lilah to Spike/Harmony. Very interesting observation!! Did anyone else see that one, too?

It was a good prelude, don't get me wrong, but mostly I just felt overwhelming sympathy for little girl Gwen and how rough it had to be so excluded as a child.

Awe probably, I mean... I guess she doesn't 'evoke' that much cause I never feel like we get to really truly explore her well enough but I was definitely incredibly intrigued by her and whenever we got to see her I always wanted to see more.

Hey that was hot. Really hot 🙂 I mean, good for him - heart beating and all - and good for her - touching someone without killing them. I could have seen a romance in the offing there... would probably have made for some interesting TV.

Too accepting? No, if he believed she was in a better place then why not leave her there? I mean... he couldn't know that it was 'boring' (which, I mean, really??) Anyway, the Dinza thing... I don't know, risky perhaps but Angel always was about going to the extremes so I guess I never really thought about it. Who wouldn't put themselves in peril to get their family back? I thought it was rather understandable and very with his character 🙂

Lol, I think it's funny that I've never thought to compare these two before. Though I can see what you mean by similar I think that those similarities are only on the surface. Emotionally I feel that the relationships were quite different, destructive in certain ways, yes, but I never felt the same emotional intensity from Lilah and Wesley.

They cared for each other, more so her than him I think, but never allowed it to get very far. They were both 'in it' to start and for the same thing from the start as well. Things changed as the relationship progressed but with the exception of passion I don't see much they had a like with Spuffy

🙂

I think that there is a definite parallel here, in that, in both cases, though the relationship itself might be considered more dark than romantic, each partner in the two relationships did genuinely care for the other, though Lilah and Spike were more open about it from the beginning, while Wes and Buffy worked very hard in trying to pretend that what they were sharing was something purely passionate, more animal lust than any degree of love, with both of them only realizing what they were actually losing when it was too late.
