Australia's Yes Vote to SSM

I hope the number of children in the world will start to drop.
Hopefully now that SSM is becoming common a lot of blokes won't
see the need to talk like complete weirdo's (as in Priscilla Queen of the Desert)

The big part I am against is the LGBTIQWHatever movement. Gay/Bi people are no different to other humans in the community. The ONLY difference is who they chose to have sex with. I do not like that it is seen as a specific diversity group- its sexual preference, not a separate human condition. The true diversity groups are still facing very real discrimination in Australia's current society. Its not comparable to the aboriginal or torres strait islanders, asian, elderly or people with disability - Yet this movement has swept up the nation as it being the MOST pressing and important issue we have to face in todays culture.... gay people have nothing visibly, physically, physiologically, mentally or verbally causing them to be subject to discrimination. This marriage bill and the consequent anti discrimination laws (that can affect livelihoods), was a useless waste of political resources, community awareness and media time. It seems like they are looking for discrimination to get everyone be pissed off about. I dont think they are looking to the long term future, if we are becoming that far removed from christianity as a culture, what direction do we want to go? What do we want to look like in 20 years, or 40? Will we want to continue with the monarchy, religious ideas and laws or start our own new thing? Will we choose to continue Christmas, Easter, Weekends , schools or modify them too? Will we adopt a new approach to cities and breeding?

I only came to realise on the weekend that I was being exposed to much more advertising than the average internet consumer. I do not have the most up to date gadgets, ad blockers or virus protection, sometimes when people send me links, I get pop up and adverts. Comparable to having free to air over cable TV. I did not realise that people with the newer gadgets were not exposed to this on the same level - specifically video content that I could not mute. Why must they scream?!? And all start with HEY GUYS (is guys gender neutral?)

A lot of businesses are targeting the LGBT+ crowd because they assume this demographic has more disposable income than heteros who are likely to end up with expenses involving children and child care. If you identify with the LGBT+ crowd on the internet, you are a prime candidate for everything from beer to blue jeans because it is assumed you can afford it whereas heteros are up to their financial limits with diapers and formula and child care expenses.

Do you have any idea of the kinds of things LGBT people are subjected to? It is a little worse than having to say 'Happy Holiday'.

I would agree that the LGBT demographic is different from other minorities, but only in the sense that LGBT children and adolescent grow up without the same support system that other minority communities have. If you grow up in a family and a community that are hostile to alternative forms of gender expression, then you will be left completely to yourself until you are old and brave enough to seek out support on your own.

Actually I grew up in a family with a gay step sister who has received endless support - I have never seen her struggle due to her sexuality. We are the same age, lived together in our teens and attended the same school. This is how I know that she faced little discrimination or problems regarding sexuality.

Now, disability, on the other hand, IS readily and frequently discriminated against to the point of physical pain and possible injury. I was surprised in my new town of the blatant racism that still exists. Far cry from the gay girl who owns two homes on a 6 figure salary with top health insurance and 3 vehicles.

Hell, I grew up with a gay sister and she was the most popular "kid" in the neighborhood and people would often say too bad I wasn't more like her. The only time she was "subjected to" any scorn was when she helped her girlfriend escape from jail and they went on the run together. That's coincidentally about the time people stopped wishing I were like her.

Well, I wouldn't invalidate the experiences of people who face racism or suffer from disabilities, because Barack Obama and Oscar Pistorius happened to do well for themselves. Nor would I force them to feel sorry for friends who got glassed at the metro or was refused to share a room at a hotel. It is not a competition.

If Australia is struggling to take care of its minority groups, it is not because they are spending too much on the bureaucracy surrounding LGBT rights.

Yes it is. Basic rights were stripped from aboriginals while the public were distracted. Dare say intentionally.

Being gay has been accepted in Australia for a long time, no one cares who you sleep with. Not until the movement wanted to make a song and dance about it. Pretty sure there is some classic aussie 70's gay porn with epic mullets, bushes and moustaches to prove we've never been fussed by a bit of buggery. Its not something you get spat on in the street here for - but being a woman in a muslim neighbourhood or homeless disabled vet in the city is.

Kinda maybe is a competition.. I feel like we should learn to accept humans of all colours and shapes before being forced to actively accept preferred sexual acts and change our language. Crawl before we can walk type thing.

My point in bringing up christianity/religion is - do we even WANT to continue with marriage in the future - should we investigate new family units?

When were basic rights stripped from the Australian Aboriginals, I wasn't under the impression they were allowed any basic rights in
the first place.
It might invite some argument if the LGBT community look at how the Aboriginals have kept a lot of dislike being aimed at them. If the
LBGT avoid that they could get people to accept their existence a lot quicker.

It has been said that a lot of religious groups have caused problems against the LBGT. So why not have a go at the priests and vicars of
various religious group who only raped little boys and refer to the as male homosexual paedophiles.
That might be best used when the various religions try to cause problems.

The experience of one does not mean it's the experience of others. I've definitely faced discrimination because of my sexual orientation, and a lot of people still care about "who I sleep with".

I posted this on the phone and thought I would expand for better explanation. There are many people facing much harsher discrimination than the gay community EVER has in australia. To allow all Aussies basic human rights should happen before whining on and on and on, about something so superficial as marriage. Especially when the legal union and specifically drawn up agreements granted gay people the same rights as those who are in a hetero marriage, for years now.

One in 3 women are assaulted in australia, that is not a small number. 18.5 percent of australia are disabled and around 97% identify as straight. In the census data that I accessed showed only 1% of couple in Australia are same sex. If there is an inequality here - it is that the loud majority of that 1% are being pandered to. (How Many Same Sex Couples Are In Australia? - OUTInPerth - Gay and Lesbian News and Culture).

We’re also almost twice as likely to have a degree or higher qualification, 42% of people in a same sex relationship will have a Bachelor degree or higher, while only 23% of straight couples will have a similar qualification.

People in a same sex relationship are more likely to be employed, and in line with our higher educational achievements we’re more likely to have a managerial or skilled role.

We’re twice as likely to be non-religious than our opposite sex neighbours, but around two out of every five couples acknowledge their religious beliefs, the most common being Catholic, Anglican and Buddhist.

There is NO disadvantage to access schooling, housing, finance or preferred lifestyle for gay people as there is for other diversity groups.

The experience of one does not mean it's the experience of others. I've definitely faced discrimination because of my sexual orientation, and a lot of people still care about "who I sleep with".

Where I am - you are not stopped at the door and refused entry to a shop or taxi because of your sexuality. This does happen if you have a physical disability or are coloured. Being Gay in australia does not attract the discrimination that physical differences do. You can enter any shop without the threat of being refused service, or having the cops called on you simply for existing in your usual state (specifically for disabled aboriginals - the generational alcohol damage causes behavioural issues). You can buy groceries at any shop you like - which is not a right that aboriginal and long term unemployed have. You could likely test drive a car, catch a bus, book a holiday, buy alcohol, access schooling and scholarship programs which are all out of reach of the lower income and physically different people in this society. You could access entertainment, the movies, any tourist attraction - while many with disabilities simply miss out and must not make a fuss about it.

May I ask what discrimination have you faced or seen others in the gay community face? I would imagine it is similar in Canada to Aust. This does not mean violence as we all experience violence as humans.

I'd like to continue a discussion in building on what we know, to see how we want to shape society, rather than fighting that it is hard life for gays in current culture - cos frankly, its not.

When were basic rights stripped from the Australian Aboriginals, I wasn't under the impression they were allowed any basic rights in

True call. It saddens me now that they have even LESS to live on with this basics card business, that they have even less rights when it comes to safe housing and accessing fresh food and WATER. Water is a BASIC human right, it really does my head in that gay people can cry they dont have equality - when if you look at the statistics and facts - they have it far better than many aussies, and are not thinking about the future of the family unit which is already under massive strain in the current climate. I am not against changing the family unit - but it confuses me as to why they've ever wanted to assimilate into the christian culture they so previously hated.

I dont mind if we, as a country, want to move away from the christian values in our law making - but I also want to know where we are going with this. What is the end game, what do we want society to look like with the removal of these values?

Why is it only gay people who has to jump through these hoops? What have you done to improve the lot of the less fortunate?

Because we are all born, raised and live as part of that culture. LGBT people often find themselves pushed to the fringes of society, but most would like to exists as part of the same society as their friends, family and colleges. People don't turn gay just to piss of Christians. It is not some statement of defiance. It is about living a life that feels natural. The fact that society is starting to accommodate this should be a good thing.

I expected that post to be picked apart as I posted after midnight on the phone and was using language similar to a night out on the piss versus speaking with an english professor 😛

I used the cheesy porn flicks as an example for how long australians have had little issue or problem with sexual preference as adults.

Why is it only gay people who has to jump through these hoops?

It is the responsibility of the most fortunate in society to help those less fortunate. LGBT in Australia are largely among the most financially fortunate. Many of the financially fortunate DO assist those in need in a variety of ways - but this embracement of marriage being the ultimate equality promotes the consumer culture, in turn leaving less for the charities. You would have seen me mention this on other marriage threads. This also relates to child bearing - which may be location specific, living in a place that is pushing population growth.

What have you done to improve the lot of the less fortunate?

Would you actually like me to answer this or will you have a go at me about it?

I have been a very active volunteer during my life. I spent over a decade voluntarily working for a disabled children's charity. There has not been a year that I have not contributed back to improve lives in my local or global community in my highest capacity since I took my girl guide promise when I was 8 years old. Perhaps this can help explain my disdain for those who's lives revolve around making money for their own superficial life benefit.

If Australia truly promotes homosexuality over all other lifestyles, then I am kinda surprised the percentage is so low.

And you will find with this move more people will start identify as gay or bisexual. Why does it matter? Why are we being asked our sexual preference? I've been with women (pretty sure I've pashed another female board member), but I prefer to be with men, I do not identify as bisexual as I do not see me in a long term relationship with a woman even though the flings were fun (my PMS is hard enough to deal with, let alone anothers at the same time). No one knows you are gay/bi unless you advertise it. It is not unusual for humans to want a bit of sexual enjoyment, I do not understand why we must be defined by it. Out of ALL things to define and assert ourselves by, why is it sexual? There are many sexual fringe behaviours - but its doubtful spanking will become accepted by the wider community as gay marriage has.

I do not remember this being such a big deal in the 90's in WA. We recognised gay people in the community, they were not discriminated against in that time - except maybe when it came to AIDS (immigrates from coloured nations also face this discrimination). Violence towards women has always been a larger social problem.

We know the family units have changed as society has - this is not a LGBT specific issue. Should we be looking to change the "normal" family unit into one that is more inclusive. Instead of Mummy and Daddy, we have a new emergence of larger family units - stepparents and siblings, same sex parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts living in the same space. Why do we as society support the limitation of marriage when we have no religious reason to do so? It feels like going backwards to make gay people marry rather than changing how society views family in general. Moving forward with the times instead of limiting a relationship to one person for all of life - when we know this is becoming less frequent and subsequently causing larger social issues.

Could we use a word like "civil union" to identify the current heads of the family? Could we cut through the messy divorce courts by being less restrictive in what a committed relationship is? Could we extend parental tax cuts to grandparents, could we give benefits to two men who decide to be stay at home daddies, could we accept a versatile family unit instead of the restrictions of a "normal" married unit. These were the types of discussions that were shut down by the LGBT movement. We could not have a reasonable discussion without emotions being brought into it. Now that the emotions surrounding the vote has passed, perhaps we can use this as a way to question how do we want our future in this country shaped. Do we want it shaped into a christian based consumer culture OR do we want to try a new direction.

I may add that while I am christian - it is a lifestyle choice that not everyone needs to participate in, nor would I feel challenged for personal growth in a strictly christian world - so I questioned during the plebiscite why we must all participate in rainbow filters and #loveislove hashtags to not be arseholes. This is what caused me personal grief surrounding that time.

I also apologise that I am not as specific with my wording as I could be - my brain is not as sharp as those who are studying, but what I have to say has no less importance.
