I can't drive yet but when I get my license its going to have to be an automatic. I would get so confused trying to figure out when to shift and what gear to shift to.

Stick isn't so bad. There's so much else to get confused about when driving, it's just one more thing. Definitely take your driving test with an automatic though.
We have a stick shift in the Pointymobile, as most in the UK do. If you learn on a stick shift you will find that eventually gear changes become second nature to you (I believe the technical term is that you "overlearn" it) - it takes a while but it's great when it happens.
If you're in the UK and you pass a test in a stick you can then drive all cars but if you take the test in an automatic and pass you can only drive autos until you pass in a stick...

My dad tried to teach me to drive his car which is a stick. Let's just say it didn't go so well... My philosophy is why bother when you can drive something that shifts gears on its own.

So far I have only driven automatics, here in the US its probably the most popular transmission style. I hadnt even thought of driving a stick until my friend bought a Porsche 911, of course its a manual transmission, the dolt left it over my house in the garage while he is away, now how could I possibly not be tempted to drive it, I learned the basics from my father and lets just say my street is witness to some of the worst exhibitions of driving ever performed, I must stall the thing at least 3 times or to understand it better about ever 3 feet. Yesterday night I did manage to make it to the end of block where of course the light is red, car in neutral, foot on brake. Light turns, foot on clutch 1st gear ease off the clutch start stepping on the gas pedal, the car must have jerked 2 feet until it stalled in the center of the street blocking both lanes of traffic, panic-stricken I somehow manage to get the car started again and put it into reverse where I like a rabbit running from a fox reverse back to my driveway. I think after the 3 days of driving I am clearly mastering this stick thing, Michael Schumacher look out.
Doc - you've got friends who leave you a Porsche 911 to look after? I must move in the wrong circles...gonna have to upgrade these deadbeat buddies I have 🙂

I like automatics...it's too hard to drink coffee, smoke, fiddle with the radio AND shift gears. 😀

Stick. So much more choice. I don;t drive but I'm gonna be doing that whole 'gear' thing when I do!
WHAT??? The rents told me that I would have to pass in a stick to be able to drive an automatic, they never told me I could learn in an automatic car. I wonder what else they've not told me!!
No, but seriously, I was so scared that I wouldn't know how to change the gears and when to change them that I put off learning to drive for a year. Now that I know how to drive in a stick I keep wondering what I was so worried about. Its really easy. Before I took lessons I would ask people how they knew when to change gears (not random people in the street, people I knew...lol..) and they would say you can hear the engine. I was like What?? but you really can hear the engine making a funny noise and then you know to change the gear.

I prefer automatic, however I had a stick shift for four years. I have many tales of adventure from first starting to learn how to drive a stick shift to on the road practicing...some pretty interesting memories! lol I suppose they both have their pros and cons. I can't say that it would be the end of the world if I were to have another stick shift! 🙂

I voted 'I don't drive'.
In truth I do, I've been taking classes, I've done over 50 hours, and next wednesday I'm taking the test, so pretty exciting one would say... well for me it ain't!
I HATE driving. It feels unnatural, and I don't like it, and I'm very bad at it. Public transportation baby, or better yet my BICYCLE 😀
PS: Currently I'm taking lessons in a standard, which I would recommend for learning, so you know how to handle either one, but for yourself buy an automatic!

Good luck with your test Ally. When I was in Amsterdam I thought that Dutch public transport looked pretty good, so you're probably OK if you live there - especially with your bike🙂 I don't know what the state of public transport is in the rest of the Netherlands but I'm guessing it's better than England....Allycat said:
