Avatar!

i went to see it in imax 3d last night, got there and they said it was sold out till monday. Saw 2012 instead, which was pretty good.
 
Nice fairy tale giving a break from crappy vampire movies. But don't you think that the avatars (the alien race) looked like humanoid Jar Jar Binks?

Well there's always some trend, we can choose to not see them like i have with Twilight...

but Avatar, as a story isnt nothing we aint seen before, very Dances With Wolves/Pocahontas feeling... you know the white man comes into indigenous land, learns some lessons, becomes their hero... (insultingly simplified but simple enough for me to write when im tired)

but it is a classic story, and maybe why we've seen it time and time again, it was told very well and was as good as something like Dances With Wolves and I hope will be able to be watched in many years time and still be as good.

I don't know how it will be on repeat viewings, though from the sounds of things in this thread its hard enough to go see the once.

Glad i booked my tickets early, there was literally no spare seats when I went, and i was front and centre. (I count the seats, its an OCD thing)

As a bit of a James Cameron fan I will get the DVD.
Ever since I saw The Abyss I was hooked, and I loved the TV series Dark Angel.

His first film for 12 years? as a director? producer? writer? or any he has been involved with?
 
Yeah this is a definite thumbs up for me. I will try not to hype it much but just say please go see it while it's still in theatres. If you are a fan of cinema you will be a fan of this film.

Great way of putting it, its certainly a movie to make you appreciate the cinema.
 
Best €12 I ever spent at the Cinema. I absolutely loved this film. Not only will I see it again but I think I'm gona ask Santa for an Avatar and a ticket to Pandora for Christmas😉

Might go see it with my dad, but he's a little unhappy about the fact that it's nearly 3 hours. I'm looking forward to it though.
 
I have seen it, and I can truthfully say that this is the greatest marriage of live action/CGI effects that I have ever seen. The interaction is absolutely perfect. As I said in my previous post, my hopes for a really monumental "John Carter Of Mars" are absolutely soaring. I would like to issue to you all my personal invitation to join me beneath the hurtling moons of Barsoom in 2012, to ride across the ocher sward beside me with John Carter, Virginian, and Warloard of Barsoom. Kaor!!

(If you don't have any idea what I'm talking about, you've got 2 years to read the book. Enjoy!
 
Just saw it in 3D--I didn't really want to see it in 3D but that theater wasn't playing it in 2D. Anyway I still loved the movie, even though the 3D felt a little weird (mainly due to my vision...) My sister already wants to go to it again, so I might go see it again (hopefully in 2D) this weekend.
 
The thing about the special effects is that, mainly in close-ups, you tend to forget that they're special effects. Does anyone know, are the Na'vi completely CGI? I know they did motion capture, but sometimes I honestly thought there were practical effects during the close-ups (ie: they put make-up on the Zoe Saldana or whoever). The bodies of the Na'vi looked just a little bit off, and only in certain scenes. Still, the effects were amazing, the fauna and flora looked amazing. Zoe's acting was fantastic! If this was a "real" performance (as in not CGI--it's definitely a legitimate performance) I'd say she's all but guaranteed tons of mainstream awards.

Anyhow, I did see it again, just today. I'd see it again if I knew enough people to have friends who'd want go see this over and over again with me. It's weird though; I liked the movie after I saw it, but it didn't hit me until maybe a day or so afterwards how much I really love it. Thought about it a lot, and was looking forward to seeing it again right as soon as I could. I think it's actually the only time I've went to a movie 2x in theaters because I genuinely wanted to see it again. The DVD for this can't come out soon enough..

Can't really explain it either.

The actors playing the Na'Vi were real, but with enhanced imagery, similar to, but more advanced than, Golem in the "Lord Of The Rings" series.

Cool, thanks. That's really amazing how far they can push these things in just a matter of years.
I saw it opening weekend and I still can't get over how much I loved it. It was absolutely stunning! Definitely in my top 3 movies of 2009 along with Up and Inglourious Basterds (although granted, I haven't seen District 9, which a LOT of people have been raving about). I'm hoping to see it again this weekend, but in 3D this time...I was already completely blown away by it in 2D and I can't even imagine how much I'll love it on a giant IMAX screen with stuff popping out at me.
