Avengers "Suiting Up"

I was just rewatching "The Avengers" final battle scene, and a thought occurred to me. Iron Man has an arsenal built into his armor, and Thor has his hammer. Two virtual walking arsenals. And the Hulk, who needs nothing more than his fists. Then we have Captain America, Hawkeye, and the Black Widow, the three relatively normal human members of the team, leaving the S H I E L D flying headquarters, where there's more firepower than at an NRA family picnic, going into battle with little more than their bare hands. A bow and some arrows, a couple of handguns, and a shield. No matter how skillful those three might be as fighters, why weren't they better armed? Cap went into battle in WW2 with guns, and certainly Clint and Natasha knew how to use them. There was a big issue earlier about S H I E L D developing special weapons specifically to handle exactly this sort of crisis, and Cap even knew where they were stored. In all of their Suiting Up, why didn't they bother to arm themselves better?

And it's not as if regular firearms wouldn't work against the aliens, because Natasha's two Glocks worked just fine.

I tend to side with Jayne on the weapons issue. There ain't no such thing as "too muck," just as long as you can still stagger under the weight.

Well, in the comic books, Steve Rogers is (kind of like Batman) so good that his shield is really all he needs. However, Captain America is one of the few mainstream comic heroes who does kill when the circumstances call for it, and he uses guns when he needs too. When he was serving as the the Director of SHIELD a little while ago, and the Captain America uniform passed to Bucky Barnes, Steve used guns all the time, and Bucky as Cap always carried and utilized a wide variety of firearms.

Likewise, Black Widow uses guns, big and small, all the time in the comics. I think that in the movies, she and Hawkeye are designed more as a special agent types, not typically trained or intended for open warfare like we saw. Now obviously, they both acquitted themselves very well, but that might be why they favored their usual weapons.

I think its just down to guns not really being a popular idea, having the good guys shooting guns makes them less good.

My first though when I think about guns is bad guys doing bad, not good guys defending good.

Guns are also boring compared to the ways the avenges battled.

The characters that I mentioned, Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, had all used firearms previously, both in previous movies and earlier in "The Avengers," so it wasn't a question of whether or not they had any sort of aversion to them or weren't familiar with their use. Natasha and Hawkeye even carried handguns constantly throughout the movie, though Hawkeye's mysteriously disappeared during the final battle. If good guys can defend good with explosive arrow heads, electric stun bracelets and Vibranium shields, they could do it even better with heavier firepower. They were depicted, and Cap even referred to them at one point, as soldiers going into battle. No soldier willingly goes into battle poorly armed, especially against the sort of odds that they were facing and what was at stake, namely the entire world, if they lost.

Yeah but guns would be boring in a superhero movie, you'd want to see exploding arrows and electric stun bracelets, because those aren't used in real life, having the superheroes using boring weapons as their main weapons would have made for a more boring and less "superheroy" movie.
