Baby names?

I know quite a few people currently expecting (babies, I'm hoping), and asking for baby name ideas, so it got me thinking.

Would you name your baby after a tv character? Buffy/Angel related or otherwise? Or what is the strangest (or nicest) baby name you've heard? Enlighten me. Maybe I'll pass some ideas onto my expectant mother friends.

I always thought Connor was a nice baby name. I have Irish-American cousins and I have suggested that name in the past.

Xander is basically Alexander so that's a plus.
William obviously, is a good name for a guy.
Daniel 'Oz' Ozbourn- another decent one.

As for girls: Tara, Faith and Dawn- I always thought they were pretty names.

I remember there was a popular fan-theory way back when that 'Buffy' was just a nickname and that Buffy's actual name was something like Barbara, Elizabeth (Shortened to Betty, then Buffy?) or something. 😕
Forgetting the fact that in California (and elsewhere) they have tons of distinctive and crazy names that parents call their kids. Like Taffy, Bunny or whatever.

Sidenote: my real name is actually Taffy, which is why I bring it up. 😀

I don't think I'd ever name one of my child after a TV character. But fun little fact, someone I know named his daughter Galadriel after the Lord of the Rings character.

I know a couple of Xander's, they're young too! Buffy fan parents.

Connor is nice, as is Dawn, Faith, Anya too.

I was so close to naming my baby River, a la Firefly/Serenity, but chickened out in the end.

I think the strangest name I've came across is Aura. Nice and all but very different, never heard of anyone called Aura before.

If I'm not wrong it has a Latin origin, I think it's quite a pretty name 😀 (Makes me think of the French name Aurore, which I find quite pretty, but actually has quite a bad association if you know anything about French theatre 😛).

Now you mention it, it does make me think of Aurora, from Sleeping Beauty.

I think name placement in films and TV, even literature, must be quite a difficult job.

Me personally, I wouldn't hesitate to call my child something from fandom. Why should it be such a big deal? My mother did it with my brother, and that was 25 years ago, so I don't understand why there's such a stigma attached to it nowadays.

In fact, an old member from this very boards named her child after a BtVS character.

I wouldn't go overboard and call a child Buffy or something that's really out there, but I don't see anything wrong with it. My top contenders are all from fandom - Eliot, Parker, Isaac, Sam, Lydia, Ruby, Malia, Dawn.

Of course, I'm not planning on having kids, ever, so this is a moot point, lol.

I don't think it's a big deal either. I know a few kids who've recently been named Abel (SoA). Sometimes tv shows remind you of a name you've always liked, whether you like the character or not is a different story.

Like I said, I was so close to naming my daughter "River", but the OH didn't like it as much as me 😀

My brother is named after Elvis Presley. No, his name is neither 'Elvis' nor 'Presley', lol.

If something means a lot to you, if it's a huge part of your life, then I don't see why you wouldn't want to pass that love on to your child. Men do it with football players or other sports stars, so it shouldn't be any different for TV or movie characters.

Not exactly the same thing, but I nicknamed my grandson after a favorite cartoon character from my childhood, the pit bulldog in the old "Tom & Jerry" cartoons.

I call him "Spike."

I wouldn't say that it's a popular name but Aura does exist in French. Aurore, however, is quite common. I had at least one in every classes I was in growing up.
One of my best friend's name is Auria, which I find absolutely lovely.

I would actually quite like naming my kid Aurore, but it just makes me think of Aurore l'enfant martyr, if I were to name my kid after someone, it wouldn't be after this poor little girl, it has to be bad luck or something!

But that's interesting, at school Aurore wasn't a popular name at all where I am from, but I assume it's because of my generation/my location. Likely more common in Quebec than Ontario too, but I did know an Aura.

Daenerys is now in the top ten names, and Sansa is also popular.

Oh, and my third grandkid is named Emilia.

A lot of people come up with crazy names for their kids. Some people just shouldn't name their kids, it's horrible, I know i shouldn't judge, but I do. I don't think it's bad to name your child after a character or someone you are a fan of. If I ever have a girl, I want to name her Lily. For 2 reasons. One, I just think it's pretty and cute, and two it's the name of the lead Detective on Cold Case, and she's pretty bad ass.

Just be glad you weren't one of Frank Zappa's children, Moon, Dweezil, Ahmet and Diva. There are some names I hear and think, "That's a kid's name", because it was uncommon when I was young.
