Hey guys!
I thought it might be fun to go back in time a little and start a thread where we reminisce about what was going on in the world, each year that the show aired! What was popular, what was happening in politics, and of course your own experiences: where you were in the world, what your favorite bands/toys/clothes were.

It'll be fun to put all of our favorite episodes into historical context! Sound good? Take any year/season you want! (I know some of you were "tiny, tiny babies" for some of these, but anything you remember is great!)

Ok, I'll start with '97, in America, during Season 1 in which Buffy Summers came to Sunnydale. Everyone in my junior high school had a Tamagachi. Anyone remember those? Do they still exist? They were so popular at the time, I'm surprised we don't see them dangling off of everyone's keychains/belt loops in the first 2 seasons of the show. I didn't have the original version; I had the one with the farm animals because I liked them better. I was utterly devastated every time one of them died or even got sick. My parents wanted to chuck the thing out of the window.

Dial-up internet! Aol! The high-pitched sounds of connecting to the internet! "You've got mail!" Disconnected every time someone gets on the phone!

Major worldwide news: Princess Diana's death. Dolly the ewe clone.

Huge year for movie releases, in America:
Titanic. (Probably saw this 5 times in the theater, with my squealing girlfriends).

Music: Radiohead's OK Computer released! (Amazing album.)
B.I.G. killed--but "Hypnotize" was really big that year.

Spice Girls' movie.

Oh I love these things. We have a show in Ireland called Reeling in the Years, where the major events of a year are looked back on while music of that year is played over it. 😀

OK, 97...I remember Pogs and Pokémon being HUGE! I'll be Missing You by Puff Daddy was THE song of the Summer. Never Ever by All Saints was number one and huge song too.

Wow. All I can remember is that I was obsessed with Green Day and Led Zeppelin at the same time watching Buffy weekly.

My mom was dating this guy that had the TV like all the time, so I never got to watch anything other than Buffy and Angel and that was only if I was good. Ugh. Hated that guy.

And we didn't have a computer. So I went to the library a lot and bought a lot of CD's. I was pretty much completely out of the loop on current events.

Aw, Tamagotchis! 😀 I had two of them and they're somewhere in the storage closet...

Actually, in the episode Bad Eggs, Buffy mentions having a Gigapet she was never able to take care of. 😛

Some things from 1997 (that haven't already been mentioned) that I remember were:

-Mother Theresa died.
- OJ Simpson civil trial, he was found guilty and held liable for damages/death of Goldman and Brown.
-Ellen DeGeneres comes out.
-MMMbop by Hanson

OMG, in 1997, I was completely obsessed with Titanic!!! 😀 I saw the movie in theaters 6 times, I had a celebrity crush on Leonardo DiCaprio (like most girls), I had the movie book (still do) and posters, and always wanted to dye my hair red because of Kate Winslet. I finally took that plunge a few years ago, lol. I wanted to learn everything about the entertainment business after seeing that movie. It inspired me so much!!! 😀

Britney Spears' first album was also released in 1997! (Baby, One More Time)

Any takers for Season 2, (1998?)

I think that was the year that the Lewinsky scandal began. There was Madonna's Ray of Light, Garbage Version 2.0, and some awesome albums were released that I wasn't into until a few years later, but now are some of my favorites, like At the drive-in: In Casino/Out.

In movies there was Something About Mary and Saving Private Ryan...I think.

In 1998, I was 7 years old. All I really remember from that year was getting my first lesson in national politics from asking my grandmother why she stood by Clinton. Fun times, fun times.
