Back To Barsoom, For Those Who Care

Hope you like the Pern series. I started reading the first one years ago and lost the book partway through. Then I started reading John Norman's "Gor" series, which was pretty good for the first four books, then Norman for some reason got fixated on male domination of beautiful young slave girls, and I lost interest. I've always intended to get back into the Pern series, but just never have.

Something else that you might like is Andrew Norton's Witch World series, if it's still in publication.

I have a huge sci-fi/fantasy library at my disposal: my father's. He belonged to one of those sci-fi book clubs for years, the ones that sent out hardbacks on a monthly basis. I read some of the Pern series as a child/teenager & loved it, and I'm back into it. He might have that Norton series as well. He died 7 years ago, so obviously newer books aren't there.

The movie was originally titled "John Carter Of Mars," but the studio dropped the "Of Mars" to avoid confusion with "Mars Needs Moms" from the previous year. Stupid reason in my opinion, but far from the worst one associated with this movie

That is so incredibly stupid!! I mean really, who saw that movie? It was animated, that is attracting two entirely different audiences, ugh. And I assume that they didn't want to use the exact title of the book because they felt "princess" would feminize it or something? Again, stupid! But that's Disney for you!

Norton also wrote a series about time travelers, but I can't recall its name. Another series that you might try is John Norman's Gor series, but don't go beyond the 4th book in the series (The Nomads Of Gor) After that he gets very deeply into bondage and male domination, and if you skip all that crap, you're left with at best a short novella, not worth the trouble to read. Shame, too. Gor was a series filled with potential.

Apparently (I never even heard of it, let alone saw it) "Mars Needs Moms" was such a flop that the studio was afraid people would associate "John Carter Of Mars" with it. Combine that with J C being a hundred year old classic that is all but forgotten by the generation that the movie was targeted for, toss in the fact that no one bothered to inform the public of the character's significance, and a dozen other factors, then toss in the announcement by the studio that it was a failure almost before the release date, and "John Carter" was doomed from the start.
