Bad or Annoying Dialogue

Joss Whedon created a universe with BtVs and Angel, and that included its own speak, Buffy Speak. We know that the universe has boatloads of witty comebacks, inspiring speeches, or just plain awesome wordplay, but every now and again there are some clunkers. What are some lines or pieces of dialogue from either series that made you cringe?

So I recently finished AtS (and Not Fade Away is so the greatest series finale ever. And what? Do you have something to say, haters? 😀 😛), and the worst part about season 5 was Eve. She was soooo annoying, and her dialogue didn't make anything better:

Eve: "Angel, it's not like this is the first time I've had sex under a mystical influence. I went to U.C. Santa Cruz."

Eve: "Upshot is we've got trouble with a capital "T," and that rhymes with "P," and that stands for "prophecy." Like who says stuff like that? Oh, and also from season 5 is Harmony and Tamika's exchange:

Harmony: "And then you're gonna tell Angel how you stole my thermos and filled it with human blood! And how you tricked me." Tamika: "My lips? Sealed. The key? Lost it!". Wow.....

Some from Buffy that I couldn't stand:

Buffy: "When you kiss me, I wanna die". So over-dramatic, so ugh.

Buffy: "I think horrible is coming. Right now, it's worse. Right now, I'm just trying to keep from dying." More of the over-dramatic.

Willow: "Get off, super bitch!" Yeah, as much as I love season 6, some of Dark Willow's lines reaked of a stereotypical villian. I was just waiting for her to go *in over the top, villian-y laugh* Muuuaah-hahahahaha!

Cordelia: When it comes to dating, I'm the slayer.

Spike: "Baby like his supper? Baby like his supper? Why doesn't baby have a nap?!" Easily Spike's worst line.

The first thing that cames to mind is, urgh, Spike's rebel-line in All The Way.

VAMP 1: What is your malfunction, man?!

SPIKE: It's Halloween, you nit! We take the night off. Those are the rules.

VAMP 1: Me and mine don't follow no stinkin' rules! We're rebels!

SPIKE: No. I'm a rebel. You're an idiot. (dusts the vamp) Give the lot of us a bad name.

I just, bleh, dislike it on several levels. First off, where is the evil yet somehow fun guy from season 2, who thought breaking rules were fun? Who chased Buffy on Halloween? Did Spike actually become a little bit more ... Traditional? Did Buffy's good-guy-vibes rub off, or is Spike so set on pleasing Buffy, he "made" himself change? Because I have a theory that when he was with Drusilla, he did a lot of things to please her. Then with Buffy, he started to act... heroic? Proper? Like he put on different masks with different women. Like how Spike acted nice and helped Buffy save people to impress her. maybe after a while, the mask and him started to melt together, just a bit?

I wonder if that was the writers way of coming up with a bad way to show that Spike had changed after spending time with Buffy, the mask had melted a bit. I mean, I buy that he's changed, but not that much.

Second off, he was wrong. A rebel tells people to stay in and play nice, play by the rules, otherwise vampires will have a bad reputation? Puh-lease. He's a housebound puppy by that time.

I actually found Eve's Santa Cruz comment funny haha...that school has a rep for being....strange. But I didn't really like her the character, at all. I also found the Harmony/Tamika exchange painful. Ugh. Hahah and I was convinced that only I found the, "I'm just trying to keep from dying" comment so beyond dramatic. I know how she felt in that moment, I've been there, but after seeing that a hundred times...I can't help but roll my eyes at it once in a while. I also love when Xander mocks Buffy and Angel's dramatic recitation of each other's names ("Angel." "Buffy." ...."Xander."). I can't remember which episode that is though. The Willow and Cordy lines are tolerable but oh man...the Spike one is so awful. I hated that line with a passion. That has to be his worst.

I'm trying to think of some that irked me...but I can't seem to. Oh, when Wesley is telling Angel that it's obvious he likes Nina and that he should just go for it, or something, that scene was pretty lame. I don't remember exactly what their lines were though. I'll be back haha

When Dawn says "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it." in OMWF. I know they were trying to tie it back to Buffy's speech in The Gift. But when she says it then, it works... when Dawn says it in OMWF, it makes me want to punch her in the face.

Xander's "When our friends go all crazy and start killing people, we help them." line epitomises the complete moral bankruptcy of the show in S7.

Spike's "Every night I save you". Dude, stop watching soap operas, please. Oh, wait, you were a drama queen even before they invented soap operas. Sorry. 🙂

Willow's baby voice in the teaser of Family. It's supposed to be a sexy scene she talks as if she is ten.

Buffy's "They have a miraculous love!" in Triangle. And you can add any of her S7 speeches too.

Oh, no! That line and scene is one of my favorites of the entire series. It's the way he sells it. Sure, it could've came across as cheesy with any other actor, but James Marsters completely nails it. Did you see the look in his eyes? He meant business. I loved it. 😛

I'm a big Woz fan, but I don't like the line "I think you'd sweat cute blood" from Becoming Pt 1.

Wtf? That's not cute, that's kinda gross and just an odd thing to say, lol.

I don't know why, but this was awkward to listen to. Maybe it's because I hate her so much and she tries to be cool or something.

drizzlydaze agrees: Aw, I actually love that line because it kind of made me think. Spike is the real rebel because vamps are supposed to be pure chompy evil, whereas he's helping the Slayer. Different kind of rebel, I suppose.

I never thought of that. And it's true, he's rebelling against traditions through helping Buffy. But in that scene, he did something very un-rebellious, making that line seem so off and ridicolous to me.

So many of Angel's good guy speeches. That guy could really, well, try hard to sell the "do right" speeches. Same with Buffy in season 7.

But I like that it was made fun off, how Buffy and Angel talked. They weren't taken too seriously. I think Andrew didn't record a entire ones of Buffy's speeches, because he got bored. There was something like that. Then in Shells, with Angel's "We don't kill humans" speech that got interupted by Wesley. So very much needed.

So, while the "do good" motivational speeches could get old (sometimes they were very good) specially if re-watched, the writers didn't seem to want the characters to be full of themselves. That's what i love about th eshows. No character is put on a pedestal for very long.

That's funny you say that but yet you're a Cordelia fan. She was a shallow bitch still in season 1 of Angel. Yet she was the same age as Willow was in Season 4 of Buffy

I think his point was that Cordy should have outgrown her shallowness/bitchy demeanor by season 1 of Angel. I loved her in season 1 because of this haha and I mean she had outgrown it to some degree. I think the only intentionally bitchy thing that Cordy said that season was in the very first episode. I also loved how she and Doyle insulted each other 🙁 ohhh Coyle.

OH, HERE I'VE GOT ONE. For me, this was the most unbearable dialogue in either of the two shows.

I thought it was bad when in Prophecy Girl, Buffy told the Master before she killed him, "If your so amped about Hell, go there". the, "If your so amped abotu hell" part was good, but "go there" was terrible

I hated how Andrew pronounced "Goku" when talking about DBZ 😛 It just came out so weird.

And Doyle in ANGEL when meeting Spike he says "more than meets the eye" while trying to act like a badass, but comes off as a goof. Whenever I hear "more than meets the eye" I think of Transformers xP

In the Buffy season 2 episode where the ghosts take over Buffy and Angelus, Angelus says something along the lines of "How do you think that makes me feel?" while crying. I thought it said it awfully (he was meant to have been taking over by the ghost of the female teacher). Honestly, I never understood why Joss thought David was good enough to lead in his own show from that episode when he acted so much better in nearly every other episode :/ I do love the episode though.

Buffy's line in "The Prom" when Angel is breaking up with her. She says something like "Is this really happening?" I just thought that was poor writing the last time I watched the episode...though I remember tearing up the first time I seen it. I might change my mind next time I see it.
