No, it's not about how Spanky had to get a penicillin shot after visiting Bambi but instead:

You may recall that earlier in the year, news broke of a horror movie based on Winnie the Pooh, of all things. With the character having re-entered the public domain after Disney let the rights lapse, Pooh: Blood & Honey took the children’s character and made him a serial killer, at which point the internet freaked the hell out.

Some horror filmmakers are gearing up to give a similar treatment to Bambi. Originally reported by Dread Central earlier in the week and later corroborated by Entertainment Weekly, director Scott Jeffrey is helming Bambi: The Reckoning, wherein the titular deer will be a “vicious killing machine who lurks in the wilderness,” per the director. “The film will be an incredibly dark retelling of the 1928 story we all know and love. [...] Prepare for Bambi on rabies!” Given the subtitle and the fact that “Bambi’s out for revenge against the hunter who shot his mom” is a common joke, you can probably guess what the film’s plot may end up being.

Further details on the film are scarce ahead of its start date of January 2023. But Jeffrey did say that the design of Bambi would take inspiration from the 2017 horror film The Ritual, for those who’ve seen that. Additionally, it’ll be produced by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, director of Pooh. Jury’s out on if this all leading to some sort of weird Freddy vs. Jason crossover involving other childhood characters in the public domain, though. (There’s no way that isn’t being kicked around, right?)

Looking forward to both of these. I love bad horror and the trailer for Blood and Honey looks hysterically bad.

Minor correction: Disney did not let the rights lapse. Milne's original book entered the public domain by default, as did everything else written in 1926.

But there are things to watch. Milne wrote 4 books, and only the first is now public, so no using things from the next 3 books (no red shirt for Pooh). Disney's creations are still under their copyright, so while you can use Milne, you have to be careful not to use Disney (so no duplicating their animation).

Postman Pat: Gone Postal: The local postie up and loses it when sicko yobs kill his beloved black and white cat, and using the secrets from all the letters he's read, wreaks bloody havoc on an unsuspecting nearby village.

Yogi Bear: He's smarter than the average bear...so be prepared for him to come at you with a chainsaw! Also he's done with stealing hampers, he wants the people who bring them. And only the scarred and haunted Ranger Smith stands in his way.

Wacky Races: Just, y'know, basically Death Race with furries.

Really, the possibilities are endless.

Shocked that the House of Mouse let the rights to any of their properties lapse to begin with.

Except they didn't. These are properties that existed well BEFORE Disney even existed. As mentioned above, Pooh was created in 1926. Bambi was 1923 (but was granted a copywrite in the USA in 1926). Heck, Bambi's Children was 1939 (I have an original hardback).

While Disney has some licensing rights, they aren't the holder of the original property. Those entered public domain this year. Disney can keep people from using THEIR material created from it, but can't stop people from using the original material. EX: You can use Bambi, but you can't use Thumper since he was created by Disney.
