i just watched band candy for the second time in 2 days(it's one of my favorite episodes!) and i absolutely love to see the young giles and he secret past of the Ripper.i really wished that over the 7 seasons of buffy tat we could have seen more of him as it was such a different side to giles the librarian.i thought at odd time we did see ripper come through in giles like when he threatened synder over not letting buffy back into high school, and when he came back in season 6 to face off with willow.how ever these moment wern't the real ripper and i would have loved them to done an episode more indepth were he came back again or something. i just loved this otherside to giles

whats everybody else'sveiws?

i'd love to hear

Well as a total Giles fan (And Band Candy is one of my favorite episodes too) I always wanted more of his past. And Ripper was just so dark and intriguing....very okay, I'll be frank. The concept was very hot. On top of Giles' already-hotness.

But it was a very dark past and beyond The Dark Age we never got an indepth look at what went on. There was a lot of untapped potential there I thought. Like you said, there were episodes where sides of Ripper came foreward but never fully.
It might have made a good episode if something Jekyll and Hyde worthy or The Replacement-like had been done with Giles. Good points of such a concept?

1. Two Gileses
2. One Giles would be all cute and geeky and librarian Watcher man
3. One Giles would be hot rebelly dark Ripper
4. We'd really get to see that side of Ripper we never fully explored.

Two Gileses?! The screen cannot contain two such magnificent wonders at one time.
the escence of ripper should have been a route that the writters and joss should have explored. i do recall there been rumours towards the end of buffy that ripper would become a spin-off but like all other rumours nothing ever came of it.it would have been good to see just how bad ass ripper was and to what extent he would take things to and how much demon ass he kicked or summoned like in the mark of eyghon lol.they really missed on a great oppertunity i think there and it is such a shame, the ripper ruled

I always have had a soft spot for Giles too, but for me season two had some of his best stuff. How he handeled things in Passion spoke volumes.

That heart wrenching and near favorite episode for me aside, I have to say when I saw the picture of a young Giles in 'The Dark Age' I was really hoping that there were more skeletons in his closet. Band Candy helped show how those skeletons got there. (it's near the top of my list for season three)

The way he dealt with Ethan was truely WOW-E in season two. I also liked the way he delt with Buffy losing her virginity and his overall role as a father figure, but in Band Candy, Buffy got to be a parental figure to both giles and Mom! I loved there reckless interaction and his bad boy nature. made me think spike might have ripper envy!

He is a very enetertaing and engauging character I have come to love. I can't wait to see what your talking about in season six with Will.

Ripper ripped, and I would have loved to see how he got some of his hard edges. Maybe one day.....hey, write a fanfic!

Ripper envy? ::snorts with laughter:: I love that phrase!! Haha
I think that, if they had gone too crazy with Ripper on Buffy, he probably would have ended up being a Big Bad. And while Willow was cute enough to recover from that, I don't think Giles would have. He would either have died or ended up going to Britain and never coming back. Either way, he'd have been gone. And I'd rather have Giles with a fuzzy past and on the show than know everything about him and him be gone (that was a bad sentence).

Bad sentences aside, you have a good point.
i don't think they should have gone in that directiopn making him come fully out and becoming big bad just simple explored the past a bit more.also i think it would have been good if they had allowed us to see the real ripper in situations like after angelus had tortured him etc in season 2. i am glad giles was in it till the end (not killed off or left forever) but at the same time the taste of ripper they gave us left me hungry for more and wanting to see the deep past that obviously surround giles

Maybe they'll do a comic.
If I were Joss, I'd be hiding in a closet. In a basement. In CUERNAVACA. Half his fans want to beat him bloody for killing their favorite character, and the other half has pet projects they want him to do.

indeed you want to be him for the suceess he has had and his sheer genius but then you think about all the pet projects and angry fans and think ok i'm happy where i am lol.

any he should really do that giles ripper comic that would be hudge!!!

i love the ripper shame we never got to see more of his true past lolz

Ok, you do realize you've just discribed 'The Replacement' one of my all time favorite episodes, and I will not not be able to watch it without seeing Giles/Ripper where I should be seeing two Xanders!! Two Xanders is better!!

In all seriousness (ha, like I'm EVER serious) I would have liked to have seen more of Ripper. I really wanted a back story, where we saw how he transformed from Ripper to Giles, and why he felt he had to do that.

And no, I will not write it!! *ignores the plot bunny boiling in her head*

That's why I said 'Something Replacement-ish'. Haha. Sorry I've warped it for you! :-D
hahahahahahahahahha oh my god if you do ever have free time let that plot rome free form your mind to paper or computer screen what ever takes your fancy lol.i so wish they do a comic though it won't ever happen but that would be cool! how bout 2 xanders and giles/ripper in the same episode that would be cool. :O:O:O:O:O we should re make the episode lolz

I too, always secretly wished for a return of "The Ripper". he was such a funny character and i had hoped in some way he would come about again. I would LOVE to see a Giles version of the replacement. Watcher Giles of course would recognize his old self and probably be extremely ashamed... but can you IMAGINE Young Giles reacting to himself older? OMG. it'd be priceless.

Strangely enough, that post made me realize for the first time how similar Giles and Spike are, just on an inverted timeframe...

Ripper/Giles: badass, dark-magic rebel teenager grows up into stuttering, nerdy and stuffy librarian.
William/Spike: nerdy, socially uncomfy mommy's boy poet changes into badass rebel vampire.

And both actually revert, in part at least, to their "earlier selves" under the influence of Buffy - Giles going all Ripper to defend her, and Spike, against his own will, becoming a romantic goof over her...

Come to think of it, it seems SO natural now how they thought they were father and son, in TR.

Even though i made the joke, i haden't thought of it in that way. Cool thinking!
your has to just made me think about giles and spike in such a way thats totally awesome! there like complete opposites but the same lol,and with them both being from england to its kind of even more amazing lol.

it also explains the resent they have for each other as they would both remind each other of there past self which is pretty cool, wonder if joss ever saw it that way or did that on purpose if you get me lol?

WOW great point, i had never saw it like that before and it seems so obvious now.
Point #1: More Ripper would have been (and still would be) wonderful. Maybe we'll get to see more of it in the comics, as he seems to be doing a bit of bonding with Faith over the whole formerly rogue thing. That's the perfect excuse for a flashback, especially with the time rippling that we have going on now.

Point #2: Of course Spike and Giles are character foils! That's why they're paired together all the time (like when they were roommates or in dream sequences and the like). I even once heard it suggested (I can't remember where) that the Joyce/Giles connection in Band Candy was at least in part a chemistry test for the Spike/Buffy dynamic.

that's an intresstin fact i never herd that before.but i hope ripper apears in the comics of season 8 or gets his own comic explainin the whole of the rippers past cus that would be awesomes lol

does any one no if there was ever a ripper figure out?

please god please let joss bring the ripper back some how

More Ripper would have been interesting, and I do think they could have played with that part of Giles' past more if they'd wanted to.

"The Replacement"-type episode featuring Giles would have been awesome.
