We discussed this in a thread once (I can't remember which...) and I thought it would be interesting to have a separate thread for it.

I'm reading the book these days and the more I read, the more I feel like this is such perfect poetry for Bangel, with the themes of first love, loneliness and death. I also read a bit about Elizabeth Barrett Browning and I can't help but see parallels between her situation and Angel's, especially the whole falling in love and it making them feel alive, etc.

When we discussed it in the other thread, I was obsessed with how perfect the first sonnet was. But I just read Sonnet VI and it also reminds me of Bangel :

Go from me. Yet I feel that I shall stand
Henceforward in thy shadow. Nevermore
Alone upon the threshold of my door
Of individual life, I shall command
The uses of my soul, nor lift my hand
Serenely in the sunshine as before,
Without the sense of that which I forbore, ..
Thy touch upon the palm. The widest land
Doom takes to part us, leaves thy heart in mine
With pulses that beat double. What I do
And what I dream include thee, as the wine
Must taste of its own grapes. And when I sue
God for myself, He hears that name of thine,
And sees within my eyes, the tears of two.

Calling @Professor Walsh
What I do
And what I dream include thee, as the wine
Must taste of its own grapes. And when I sue
God for myself, He hears that name of thine,
And sees within my eyes, the tears of two.
Oh, man! This is what it's about, y'all, innit? It reminds me of Angel's words "Am I a righteous man?" and Darla's "God doesn't want you." Buffy will be his advocate.

Thank you @Grace for sharing @Taaroko 's art again! I was looking for it today but couldn't find it. I'm looking forward to having read the whole book, but I'm trying to take my time with it.

I wish there was an essay out there making the parallels between the sonnets and Bangel's relationship. And I just had a ridiculous idea but... I would pay a lot for Angel's "annotated" version of the book, lol.
