Bangel Fans: Has Angelus Ever Stopped You Being a Bangel Fan?

Has Angeleus ever stopped you from being a fan of Bangel? Like a disturbing moment such as Angeleus killing Jenny?
 
Nope. I think, if anything, the presence, or potential, of Angelus makes it more intense. Especially in S2 and S3, there's this sense, to me at least, that Buffy and Angel are about as perfect for one another as any two people can be, but there's always the looming shadow of what might happen if it goes off the rails lurking over them.

Call me a girl, but I like me some angst in my relationships (well, T.V. relationships...although, come to think of it, angst might be the perfect word for my real life ones as well. Huh. And people wonder why I connect so much with Buffy and Angel. Okay, rant/inner monologue over 🙂). Or at least, well-written angst, and I think that was always the case with Bangel.

And like Cordy said, they have pretty much the forbidden love of all time. So whenever they do manage to hook up, whether it's in "Surprise" or "I will remember you" or any of the dream sequences they have, I don't think anyone else has the passion they do. I'm well aware of how this sounds, but in part because it's so forbidden, Buffy and Angel have, by far, the hottest ship' on the show.
 
Nope 🙂! I have and always will be a Bangel fan, like [MENTION=11975]Always Bangel[/MENTION] said this is one of the reasons I love them that they get through what happened in the past.

To me Angelus is a different person Angelus is the vampire and Angel is the human as Angel said "when you become a vampire the demon takes your soul" so I feel when it's Angelus Angel is trapped in the back of Angelus's mind and the other way round when it's Angel as Angel says in "The Dark Age" "I've had a demon inside me for a couple hundred years just waiting for a good fight" he is referring to Angelus. In "Becoming Part 2" Angel has returned not knowing anything because it was all Angelus doing not Angel. Angel soon remembered what Angelus had done and feels that it was his fault but it wasn't it was Angelus

No, it doesn't stop me from liking Bangel or change my feelings for Buffy and Angel. It actually makes them a more interesting couple, for me, because there is this level of complexity you don't see in other relationships in the show.
 
Nope. Cause Angelus and Angel both live inside of him but they're completely different things. I agree with what [MENTION=11903]AmelRIOT[/MENTION] said in her post.

I agree with this.

Now I love Bangel BUT no one wants to watch a tv-show where the couple is blissful and in love and perfect... it gets boring. Adding Angelus to the mix gave it a twist that made you frustrated and upset but if anything, even more emotionally involved, to me at least. 🙂

No it made it more complicated and more interesting. I think I even like more ANgelus than Angel ;-) I would have liked to see him much more as Angelus on the show!
 
No force in the verse can stop me shipping Bangel 😉

Angelus and Angel are two different entities as far as I am concerned.

"When you become a vampire the demon takes your body, but it doesn't get your soul. That's gone..."

Angelus has never gotten in the way of how I view Angel or his relationship with Buffy. Similarly, Angelus' wearing Angel's body does not entice me to ship Bangelus, either. They are completely distinct and separate "people" in my mind.

I remember initially being confused that Buffy still had such strong feelings for Angel in Season 3, but I quickly fell in love with the struggle and the pain that came from the Angelus period. I think that fact that Season 3 thoroughly explored the aftermath of Season 2 (for Buffy, the Scoobies and Angel) made it that much more rich and complex. It helped to introduce what lies at the heart of the Bangel relationship - the fact that these two love each other more than anything in the world but will always struggle to find a place for themselves.

The Angelus period would have gotten in the way for me if I felt that Angelus had truly victimised Buffy. Yes, he stalked and terrorised her and her friends but I never felt that he had truly turned her into a victim. All the pain in Season 2 was coming from the fact that Buffy couldn't separate Angelus from the man she fell in love with. If Buffy hadn't loved Angel, Angelus would have just been another run-of-the-mill Big Bad.

That's exactly why I ship so much this couple. They symbolize the forbidden love but they also have this love for each other that will make them do everything to save each other's lives. And of course, even when they live in different towns and they have other lovers, whenever they go through hardships in their lives, they are there for each other and their feelings are still very strong. In season 2, till Jenny's death, Buffy still hopes that she will get Angel back. Unconsciously, she finds it difficult to separate Angel from Angelus, especially at the beginning of his transformation. They are still the same person, their feelings (either unconditional love for Angel or strong obsession mixed with hatred for Angelus) are very strong for Buffy.
So I completely understand the fact that she can't find the strength to kill him at first. Even in Becoming 1 & 2 when there might be the possibility that Willow can bring Angel back, Buffy starts hoping again..and again, I understand how painful it was to kill him in the end. She alludes to that years after that, first at the end of Season 5 and then in Season 7, I think she says to Xander because of Anya turning into a demon again, "I killed Angel... and I loved him more than anything in the world". It just proves to me how hard it was to kill him.
In season 4, she still takes his defense (without saying his name but it's there,) against Riley who thinks that demons and vampires are just monsters, to be killed.

Concerning Angelus, I still wonder about him killing her...😕 a part of me is still not sure about that...when he lunges with his sword, he aims at her face but I think she could easily have stopped the sword and she did so (she blocks the sword) because it's not that strong a move in my opinion. I'm still confused about that and Angelus' intent towards Buffy.
It might be a bit sick but I can somehow understand why some women find it hard to leave their abusive partners or husbands because when feelings get in the way, you tend to deny or minimize the fact that they have hurt you and are very dangerous. (That's why I like episode Beauty and the Beasts of season 3 so much, it reflects abusing relationships perfectly)

so, no, Angelus has never stopped me from being a Bangel fan..

Angelus killed Jenny, Angel is another story. I will never stop loving Buffy and Angel. I survived the season eight, so I guess that now can not happen nothing that will make me stop loving them.

Anyway, Angelus has never stopped me from shipping Bangel. The lore of the series clearly states that the demon is a separate entity from the human it takes over: Buffy loves the man, not the demon. For this reason, I've never viewed her loving Angel as being problematic.
 
If Soulless Spike never stopped people being a Spuffy fan, shy should Angelus stop people being a Bangel fan?
 
I'm not arguing against Bangel here but Buffy never knew Angel the man, he always had the demon in him (except in the Angel episode IWRY), his soul meant that being evil caused him a lot of pain, to the point that he turned good, but Angelus and Angel - though "different people" for the purposes of the show(s) - are really the same, except that in one state he has a conscience (soul) and curbs his wrong-doings. Granted that's a big difference and I would never blame Angel for Angelus' actions or laud Angelus for Angel's, but for me although the show presents them as different to make things easier to process, they are one and the same. An analogy would be Willow and Dark Willow, they're the same person but one is "evil" and one is not (though I must add that lately I've realised I have a problem with that particular dichotomy, which I'm sure I'll go into another time and in a more relevant thread when I've had more time to think on it).

I see where you are coming from, but I have to disagree somewhat. Dialogue from Giles in the Harvest ("You're not looking at your friend; you're looking at the thing that killed him.") and Buffy's speech to Ford in Lie to Me clearly state that a demon is created with the basis in its personality coming from it's host, but they are not the same entity. Angel's explanation in S1 about "the demon doesn't get your soul. That's gone." seems to imply that his human soul (Liam's essence) was returned to him, not that the Romani people gave him a completely new one.

In the end, I think ensouled vampire Angel should really be considered a gestalt entity comprised of Liam and the demon (Angelus). But clearly the man plays the significant factor in Buffy's love, because she never had a romance with the soulless incarnation (thankfully).
