He loved the two of them in very different ways.
Who was he in love with? Buffy.
Who was his best friend? Cordy.
Two very different, incredibly powerful types of love.
As far as losing the soul thing, he only lost it to Buffy. When the shaman gave him that dream it was Buffy's name he said before he...uh...lost it. She was the one in his thoughts.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Angel and Cordy have sex in 'Awakening', which ultimately led to him losing his soul again.

Angel and Cordelia kiss sweetly. She puts her arms around his neck, but he stops her.

Angel is lying on top of Cordelia, kissing her softly as they make love. Suddenly, his face goes from pleasure to pain.

(gasps) Buffy? (falls off the bed, horrified) No! Oh, God! No!"

All of the above (as well as killing The Beast and reconcilling with Connor) was a dream given to him by the shaman in order to cause him to lose his soul.
Cordelia and Angel never actually had sex.

You know that I think this "Buffy" gasp is just a bone thrown to you strange people known as "Bangels". Typical of Joss. I don't see this gasp as disproving him reaching perfect happiness with Cordy, too. 😛
Still, I have to admit one thing - with Buffy, he reached a MoPH even though the Judge was after them. With Cordy, to acheive a MoPH he needed sex as the culmination of an almost fairytale-like perfect day of solving all problems.
(And that's the most pro-Bangel sentence you'll ever hear me say. 😛 )

Cangel, obviously. Bangel was immature, melodramatic, and doomed from the start. Buffy and Angel are about as bad for each other as two people can be. The only good thing that came out of Angel discovering Buffy's existance was that she inspired him to get off his ass and stop eating rats and make something of himself.

Just as a side note...it was actually David Greenwalt and Steven S. DeKnight who wrote this ep🙂
Personally I see it as Cordy wasn't quite doing the magic for Angel so the shaman had to pull out the big guns with Buffy, but that's just me😀

Cangel was more mature in my opinion. Their love grew after years of working together and sharing mutual understanding, respect, and friendship. Whereas with Buff, he just fell in love with her from the start after stalking her and spying on her crying in her bathroom. Creepy...

Well, I think it's pretty obious what my opinion on that one is.
First of all, when Angel met Buffy she was a teenager, unstable, and maybe there was attraction and lust between them, but that's it. They just had nothing in common, or could you see them hanging out as friends?
Cordelia, on the other hand, was much more mature when they fell in love. She was already Angel's best friend, so it was not only about physical attraction (though there was on both parts ('hello salty goodness' and Angel checking Cordy out in that bikini she was wearing for this commercial, for example), but also based on character.
So yeah, I think he loved Cordy more.

I like Cordy and Angel together. Buffy and Angel were always far to dramatic, I'm a slayer, you're a vampire. We're incapable of saying hello to each other, so we just say "Buffy" or "Angel" when we meet. With Buffy it was pretty much equal in how she seen him, a Vampire, and a man. With Cordy it was, you're more human than vampire. You did a lot of bad things, but i will talk to you like a friend. I'll love you, yell at you, tease you, and make you laugh and smile. That's why i like Cordy, she treated Angel like a human, screw this Shanshu crap, when Cordy was around, he was pretty much already there.
I do think he loved Buffy more. But his love of Cordy was far more important. For him. She thought him how to be human again.

They were pretty close to it in "Waiting In The Wings" but then again that was a spell.
Angel loved Buffy and Cordy but for different reasons. Neither relationship worked as you know. To find perfect happiness with both women would cause him to lose his soul.
I love Cangel more than Bangel. Just to let you know. 😛

I think he was in love with Buffy, sure. But I think he loved Cordy, too. I think if he was asked to choose between them, he would find it hard, and I don't know which he would pick, as I think he was madly in love with them both.
If the question was which shipping did I find cuter, I'd go for Cangel, but as that's not the question, I'll have to say he loves them both.
