Bangel Or Cangel

Leaving actual romance out of the formula, which woman knew Angel better, was a closer friend, and was the one who you would imagine being the first one who he would come to for advice or just to "hang out" with?
 
Cangel, that was a better relationship in every way. I really loved the episode "You're Welcome". And clearly Angel was still greiving Cordy when Fred dies. That relationship was one of those unpredictable things that you don't expect but really work out. I think it's partly because they were both adults in the relationship rather than a teenager and an adult and also because Buffy and Angel both were "drama queens". Drama queens do best in relationships when their partners anchor them.
 
I think Cangel is fine if you're talking about friends, but there wasn't really a relationship there. Making that pair romantic felt forced to me.

I do think Angel had a rapport and comfort level with Buffy that he isn't going to find with another person.
 
Definitely Cordelia, in that sense. They seem to genuinely be very good friends during those first few seasons of AtS. She was so hurt when he turned his back on them, but it always felt like more of a good friends situation than anything other.
 
I saw a lot of love and understanding between them. It's always going to be hard for Angel with the whole sex curse thing to really connect with the woman he loves but that doesnt mean he wasn't feeling it.

It wasn't a sex curse. He could have sex with someone, it was post-coital with Buffy cuddling and the happiness that came with it that lost him his soul, not the actual sex act itself.
 
but he couldnt have great sex with anyone, especially if they were in low. The fact he didn't sleep with Cordy probably meant he couldnt guarantee the moment of happiness thing. He could sleep with Nina because he knew it wasn't that serious.
 
Cordelia.
Because basically he and Buffy always ended with sucking face if they around each other for any length of time. Her Mom's funeral? They kiss passionatly. Just killed an awesome badass Preacher? Almost instant frenching and basking (Angel looked particularly dazed there).

Basically Angel couldn't just hang out with Buffy without her, at one point or other, launching herself at him 'mouth open' and him having to eventually fend her off politely. The sexual rension between them would always be intense.

But if Angel just wanted to hang and chat, shoot the breeze? Then Cordy, she was always a hoot.
Say what you will about Angel but he appreicates a woman who knows witty repartee': Buffy, Cordelia, Faith. Somebody who can make him smile with a nice turn of phrase.
 
Cordelia - if she had survived I think that Buffy and Angel would not have had a chance.
 
Cordy no doubt. They became better friends than Angel and Buffy ever could. Cangel had a type of love that you cultivate, and learn to appreciate and nurture. Bangel was all about the teenage angst. It might have been a deep passionate love, but it never had the foundation that Cangel had. I don't see Cangel as romantic, more so as two people that went through so much together, and grew closer from it. They had trust, they could rely on each other, and more importantly they could actually live in the same town unlike Buffy and Angel. Angel needed a woman like Cordy in his life.

Substitute everything you just said about Cangel for Spuffy and your sentence still works perfectly.

Except I always saw Angel and Cordy as friends first and foremost, while the romantic feelings came second. Buffy and Spike were never really friends, they went from enemies, to sexually involved, to romantically involved. They did a bit of a skip on the friendship scale. Cangel was always more about falling for your best friend type deal. I don't really see too many similarities between Spuffy and Cangel, although I can appreciate both ships for what they are.

Season 5 - they were friends. Buffy trusted Spike with her family several times. Not the kind of friends Cordy and Angel were - but also two very different people.
 
Buffy and Angel were awkward as hell just being friends. Cordelia and Angel were awkward as hell being anything other than friends.

The only way Buffy and Angel could have been genuine friends would have been for Angel to stay human in IWRY. Then they'd have either been great friends in a relationship or they'd have got it out of their system, genuinely moved on and had the chance to become just friends afterwards.
