Other than the fact that the debate is so much fun, why is there all of the controversy between the people who want Buffy to be with Angel and those who prefer to see her with Spike? Just about any Spuffy supporter agrees that there was a stage in the Slayer's life when she needed, relied on, and loved Angel. Why can't the Bangels see the same thing with Buffy and Spike?

(Okay, all of you adamant Bangels, it's your chance to state your case.)

I have to say I think Spuffy fans don't like Angel as much as Bangel fans don't like Spike. I don't think one side is better or worse than the other.

I have commented to various people recently, that I have always found this to be the other way round; the Spuffy fans are much more anti-Bangel than I am anti-Spuffy (I can only really speak for myself here as opposed to Bangel fans on the whole), but maybe both sides think that as we're all so good at being subjective! 😛

I have always said that, now I am older at least, I can appreciate the relationship that Spike and Buffy had on a friendship level. I actually enjoy watching their friendship on screen but their sexual/romantic relationship does nothing for me. It doesn't mean I dislike Spuffy or can't see that Buffy needed him, I just think it was more about friendship than love.

And after seeing Nix's post, I do have to agree to be honest. It's not that either side 'hates' the other relationship, we just get so wrapped up in defending our 'ship that we don't always tend to say much on the other 'ship in a positive light.

I'm pretty sure that on several occasions I have said how much I enjoy the Spuffy friendship and appreciate its place on the show. I would just like to see, and think that, Buffy and Angel will end up together in the end. The relationship meant more to me and was more about my ideas of love. But I don't diminish what Buffy and Spike had entirely, I just don't like it on a romantic level.

As an outsider in this whole Spuffy/Bangel wars, I'll say you're right. Spuffy fans and Bangel fans have them all:

1- fans who enjoy each ship but prefer one more
2- fans who obsessively love one ship and obsessively hate the other
3- fans who love a ship and bash the male in the other one
4- fans who love a ship and are okay with the male in the other one

... etc

I don't hate Spuffy. I just don't like them. I'm a true Bangel fan, but I can understand why someone like Spuffy more. In the season 2 I loved Spike, when he was with Dru, and I don't have a problem with him. I agree with Flannen, I always saw Buffy and Spike like friends. Maybye friends with benefits. I just can't feel love. But when I see Buffy and Angel together I'm all like awww how sweet, I'm so jealous. Like i said I don't hate them, I don't skip scenes with them, but I don't like watching them together.

You missed the fans who love a ship and bash the male actor in the other one.

But Bangel/Spuffy co-exist quite well in their common hate toward Riley and Buffy/Riley.

I hope I'm just being crazy here....And hope that me saying in another thread that James Marsters isn't the best actor in the Jossverse means this label suits me? 😛

Cos that's not male actor bashing...And if not, I don't see this around very much, it tends to be much more about the characters than the actors. It's not the actors we 'hate/love' it's the characters.

Although love of a character does, in many cases, lead to a love of the actor I suppose.

Also I don't hate Buffy/Riley either! 😛

Don't worry, wasn't talking about you! I like reading through archives on different forums (including BB) and the usual remarks were that DB could not act in S1-S3 of BtVS or that JM was to skinny. If you have time, Sunnydale Cemetery is a interesting reading on how the fandom/shippers discussed the verse while airing ( I'm around page 850)

Lol, good good! I was a bit worried there, for a minute! I do occasionally delve into the cemetery from time to time when I'm bored, there's so much to read in there. But I forget where I am all the time!

Anyway, I'm glad I didn't offend you. I was worried that I had! 😀

What we discussed was a matter of like it or not. I just happen to like Spike more
But Bangel/Spuffy co-exist quite well in their common hate toward Riley and Buffy/Riley.

So true. Pretty much everyone hates Briley. Or at least finds them boring as all hell.

YAY! *claps hands* I finally have time to reply to this thread!

Do I love your threads, WA.

OK. I know I might royally offend and/or piss off some Bangels around here when I say this, but you know what? I'm saying it anyway.

I think that, on some level, Bangels are threatened by Spuffy, though they'll never admit it.

*dodges speeding bullets*

This is just my opinion. Here, let me elaborate:

Spuffy is everything Bangel never has and never will be. It was violent, destructive, passionate, revealing, transformative. For me, Spuffy is unforgettable. Still, to this day, they are my favorite TV "un-couple."

Ovid, a roman poet, in his "handbook for love" titled Amours, published in 16BC said that we want and desire what is forbidden, or what is unattainable for us. This seems basic now, but he was the first person to write of this paradox. Spike wanted Buffy at first because she was a Slayer, and Spike could never separate violence and sex. Later, he wanted her because he knew deep down on some level she'd never love him, and it was a challenge. Then, she did love him. And the tables were turned. And it was obvious. Spuffy survived incredible odds, their journey from enemies to lovers to friends is quite amazing, really. Spike was Buffy's best friend in those last days. She told him everything, trusted him with her life, saved him time and time again, even when he was a threat to the people she loved. Buffy will never forget Spike. I think - no, I know she thinks about him all the time. Buffy taught Spike to be human, and he taught her to love again. He gave her the fire back. He gave her the strength to go on. Without him, she admits she wouldn't have had the strength to fight Caleb. Without Spike she would have never found the Synthe which in turn, with Willows help, helped her win her war and save the world yet again. Who would have saved the world if she hadn't given Spike the amulet? A champion but stronger than human.

Spike challenged Buffy. He called her out when she wasn't making sense. He encouraged her to think about her actions, about her faults. He was there for her when no one was - when her friends, her family had abandoned her, he was there. She's his hero, he's her shoulder to lean on.

The fact of the matter is, Buffy allowed Spike to take her completely over, body and soul. That freaks people out. How she treated him was harsh and cruel. That also freaks people out.

Spuffy is for realists, Bangel is for the romantics. The ones who believe in the long run, when all is said and done, that Buffy and Angel will find a way back to each other. Us Spuffies? We know Bangel is the stuff of fairy tales. Real life is rougher, more complex. There isn't always an answer or explanation for why people act the way they do.

So, why can't the Bangels see that Buffy needed, relied on, and loved Spike? Perhaps because fans see what they want. Bangel is the most loved 'ship in the 'verse, no question. It's "classic" Buffy. The vampire in love with a Slayer, doomed from the start. Poetic. Makes for great story, and great melodrama.

Also, I think on some level the fans have adapted the view towards Spike Buffy had in Seasons 5-6. He didn't have a soul, therefore wasn't human, therefore can't be held accountable for anything. Like how a lot of people don't believe he loved her pre-soul.

Also, I don't think Spike will ever be let off the hook for what he did in 'Seeing Red." Makes me wonder if Angelus had tried the same thing with Buffy in S2, would the fans still feel the same way about their "destiny" together? What if he had tortured and raped her like he had to Drusilla when he sired her? Yet, even if that did happen, people would still argue it with "Well, when he's Angelus, he can't be held accountable for his actions."
Like there's any difference with Spike!
Even though he had human emotions, and acted humane some of the time, he was still a vampire.

I think this just all goes back to what Spike is and will always be: the underdog. "Love's bitch." The guy who never really got the chance to prove himself. That's what Joss liked so much about his character in the first place, and that's what he will always be. No matter what he does, he can never win. He will always be haunted by what he did in the past.

Now, I must say that I don't dislike Bangel at all. I've just always found Spuffy more interesting. We all have aspects of the show we are more drawn too. Doesn't make anything "better" than anything else. So many more layers of interpretation can be read into the Spuffy relationship, in my opinion. With Bangel, it was all about the epic moments, which granted, made for great TV.

With Spuffy it's the details that count. It's those tiny subtle moments where a real understanding between the two is reached that I find so interesting. And it's not like Spuffy were lacking in epic scenes! The breaking down the house in "Wrecked" and the ending scene in "Chosen" are, in my opinion, a couple of the most power images/metaphors in the entire show.

...everything Joan said. :-D

I'd also like to throw it that while I ship Spuffy, I do like Bangel. I get engrossed in their relationship; they make me cry and smile and squeal and I like to believe that they might one day find their way back to each other.
But the chances of that are slim. And after everything that happened between them, their relationship just wouldn't be the same. Like Joan said, Spuffy is more realistic; it was tough and creepy and it taught them things. I think what they had is more real because it *wasn't* the whole love-at-first-sight thing. They got to know each other completely before loving, which was always my main issue with Bangel.
I like them both. I really do. But I think Spuffy is more interesting, more realistic, and even more poignant at times than Bangel.

Why would Bangel WANT to be that?

I also just wanted to add that, simply having a negative opinion of a character is not bashing. People have likes and dislikes, and people can think some actors are bad at it at certain points. That's just opinion, not bashing.

I agree. I don't see why would someone want to see violent and destructive couple. I respect Spuffy fans, but I don't think they love them because of that.

I think "couples" that never actually "get together" are more interesting, personally. There's more mystery.

And I agree absolutely about likes and dislikes. That's what I love so much about Buffy fans, how adamant and passionate they are. WA's question wasn't why people bash Spuffy, he was asking something more complex; why can't Bangels admit that Buffy loved, needed, and relied on Spike like she did on Angel earlier in her life?

But you have to admit it is true that many Bangels hate Spuffy. That's just true.

I was responding to the comment made in the thread that people from the other ship bash the actors. My point is that hating Spuffy isn't bashing lol

🙂

But you have to admit it is true that many Bangels hate Spuffy. That's just true.

I have to start with this, I'm afraid. This may be true. I wouldn't say its true for myself, as I said in a post above. However you can't say this and not accept a Bangel fan saying that most Spuffy fans hate Bangel. Some of the first hardcore Spuffy fans I spoke to on BB, hated Bangel, just as I'm sure you've met some Bangels who hate Spuffy. It is only fair to say that this is the case for both sides.

And referring to WA's OP question, there are just as many Spuffy fans who refuse to accept that Buffy needed, loved and relied upon Angel, and fail to see the importance of that relationship.

It's totally equal.

Spuffy is everything Bangel never has and never will be. It was violent, destructive, passionate, revealing, transformative. For me, Spuffy is unforgettable. Still, to this day, they are my favorite TV "un-couple."

I have to agree with BS here, if this is what Bangel was then I would have disliked it as much as I do Spuffy, with regards to being violent and destructive, in particular. You make it sound like Buffy/Angel have missed out on something but not experiencing this together, which is really confusing. A relationship founded on violence and destruction, and not necessarily on a physical level, shouldn't be a relationship, as far as I'm concerned.

And how is Bangel not passionate? Just because it wasn't portrayed in rather more graphic sex scenes or rooted in 'hatred' and 'disgust' doesn't mean they didn't have passion. They showed passion in body language and words and the way they looked at each other from 'Angel' (if not before) all the way up to 'Chosen'.

I'm not going to quote the whole paragraph as you'll know which one I'm referring to. I agree that Spike was Buffy's best friend in season seven, and that was all. You said yourself they went from enemies to lovers to friends. Which is where they are at now. Like Joey and Rachel, (I'm aware I keep using Friends refs in 'ship debates lol) they tried it and it didn't work. Spike and Buffy as friends, works, so much better than they do romantically, they are past romance now, because they're 'romance' was exactly about violence and destruction.
Personally I think she chose Spike as her Champion 'cos she had an inkling what might happen and would rather sacrifice him than Angel! 😛 (totally joking here!) But, in all seriousness, her reasons for choosing Spike as the 'Champion' didn't come to being about love, it came down to what she said. She needed Angel to prepare for war if she didn't win. Or, looking at if from a more emotional point of view, even if there was more too it than simply having Angel as the 'second wave' she chose Spike and rewarded him for being her friend. For being able to be there for her, after finally ceasing to expect and beg something more from her, for which I think he did deserve it.

Spike challenged Buffy. He called her out when she wasn't making sense. He encouraged her to think about her actions, about her faults. He was there for her when no one was - when her friends, her family had abandoned her, he was there. She's his hero, he's her shoulder to lean on.

So did Angel. There were so many times when Angel was this person in the earlier seasons, and the later ones! Even in season two, when Buffy is ranting about Ted to Angel, he challenges her reaction to it, guides her round to thinking that it's not Ted, but just the fact he's Joyce's boyfriend, and giving him a chance/ Turns out it was actually Ted, but you get what I'm saying here. Similarly in 'What's My Line Pt I' Angel is there for Buffy when she's feeling down about Career Week and her pre-destined future. Later in the series, when Joyce has died, Angel again comes to her aid and acts as her hero.
I'm not denying what you have said about Spike in this role, but its only fair to acknowledge that Angel has been, still is, all these things for her.

We, well I, can. Apart from 'loved'. I honestly don't think she did love him, but that's just my opinion. And the 'see what they want' comment is, again, a comment that can be used in equally same the way on the other side. And, I'd say, from evidence on this board, Bangel are not the most loved 'ship in the verse! 😛
Spuffy was just as doomed from the start as Bangel was, and can therefore take on exactly the same connotations as you've described above. But Bangel is more than just a 'great story' or 'melodrama', and its rather dismissive to say so.

No, and he shouldn't be. Especially if he, and some Spuffy's, profess that he loved her, pre-soul or not. And its rather presumptuous to suggest that Bangel fans would react this way. If Angel had done all of those things to Buffy, Angelus or no, I can pretty safely say I would have felt differently towards him. Much the same way my feelings towards Willow are altered after season six. But he didn't do any of those things, even though he was Angelus. Now, this may simply be down to the fact that Joss, had a different writing style at this point in the show and Angelus' past nature of rape and torture weren't so extensively explored until the show had matured, I'm not denying that. But as it didn't happen, and you don't know how the Bangels would have reacted, I don't think its as strong an argument.

Now, I must say that I don't dislike Bangel at all. I've just always found Spuffy more interesting. We all have aspects of the show we are more drawn too. Doesn't make anything "better" than anything else. So many more layers of interpretation can be read into the Spuffy relationship, in my opinion. And it's not like Spuffy were lacking in epic scenes! The breaking down the house in "Wrecked" and the ending scene in "Chosen" are, in my opinion, a couple of the most power images/metaphors in the entire show.

You see, this is what I have a bit of a problem with. You say it just comes down to opinion, and doesn't mean that either one is better, and then completely deprecate Bangel by saying it just makes for great TV, which suggests that you do think one is better than the other?

No, Spuffy weren't lacking in epic scenes, just like Bangel did have those tiny, subtle moments. Like I said, their body language, the lingering looks they shared, the whole interaction in 'Chosen' the 'I'm not getting any older', even in episodes like 'The Yoko Factor' the subtlety is there.

I can, and do, accept that Buffy needed and relied on Spike throughout the series, but it's not that I refuse to accept she loved him, I just don't see it, it just doesn't invoke those feelings within me. It's nothing to do with feeling threatened or being a 'romantic' and not a 'realist'. Like I've always said, it just comes down to your own ideals about love, which as far as I'm concerned doesn't mean I'm not realistic or live with my head in the clouds. If Buffy and Angel had never seen each other again after 'Graduation Day Pt II' then I can see that yes, that would be the stuff of fairytales and the chances of a long lost reunion would be unlikely, but the chemistry and tenderness they still share in 'Pangs', 'The Yoko Factor', 'Forever' and 'Chosen', not to mention the Angel episodes, shows how much they did reach a level of understanding, how much they have matured from the love of seasons two and three, and how possible it is they will one day find each other again.

EXCELLENT POST! Couldn't have said any of this better myself! :)
The major problem I have with Bangel is... it's too cliched. Girl falls in love with boy she's not supposed to, things go wrong, and then happily ever after, except they break up.

Spuffy has all the things a real relationship has. The "Do I fall in love with him? Or do I shrug off the feelings, because I know he's bad for me?", in Buffy's case, or the "How do I make her fall in love with me?" problem that Spike has. Spuffy has the rocky road that eventually leads to perfect harmony: They become best friends. They lean on each other for support. They begin as friends and end as lovers, as "Chosen" proves.

If that doesn't make sense, it's because I'm immensley tired. 😛

It's totally equal.
And she comes back swinging! ☺

For one thing, I can't believe why anyone would dismiss or deny the importance of Angel in Buffys life. That's just dumb. (No offense.)

Now, about Spike and Buffy:

Believe me, I of all people understand why you can't believe she loved him. The way he treated him in S6 was certainly contradictory to it.

Also, I'd like to clarify that I don't believe she realized her love for him until the end.

OK now for my "rebuttal":

Despite being a Spuffy since Spike and Buffy walked across the screen together, I didn't believe she loved him until recently. I gave it a lot of thought, and I was always trying to justify to myself why I found their relationship to be so important, and why it was so interesting for me. To be honest, I think that Buffy's feelings toward him were developing into love in Season 7, and she just wasn't aware of it. It was a natural progression. He slowly became the kind of man she could love and respect. I mean, it's not like she was doing any serious reflecting on the changing matter of their relationship at that point. After all, there were more important, pressing matters.

I believe, and just recently came to this realization, that it wasn't until she was faced with the real possibility of losing him that she realized her true feelings for him. That's why she told him she loved him. Because she did, at that moment. Just because he didn't believe her doesn't mean she didn't mean it. My mother was watching "˜Touched' with me yesterday and was referring to Buffy's "look of love" she gives Spike when they're just lying together, staring into each other's eyes. So, my point in, even someone who isn't well-versed in the Buffyverse can see she loves him. It's plain to see in the acting.

What I mean here is that is what I find so interesting about the Spuffy dynamic. I agree that is not what a relationship should be based on, of course - but this is fiction. And it's about what's the most entertaining. And for me, that was Spuffy.

Just as you connect to Bangel, just as it resonates with you, Spuffy does with me. I just never saw any chemistry with Buffy and Angel. We all see things differently, interpret things differently. This is what is so powerful about a complex text like Buffy. And yes, Bangel had passion, of course. I didn't mean to say it didn't. Spuffy had a different, more physical and raw, uninhibited passion.

This is where I disagree with you, friend. They never did "try" to make it work, in my opinion. He did, not her. They were sleeping together, sure, but the whole time Spike wanted more. But they were never together or close, as Buffy was so adamant about saying over and over. What if, post-Chosen, they tried again to have a healthy relationship, now that he was a soul? I think it would go quite differently.

Personally I think she chose Spike as her Champion 'cos she had an inkling what might happen and would rather sacrifice him than Angel! 😛 (totally joking here!)

Should I even reply to this? LOL Of course, I feel differently. I believe she gave the amulet to him because she believed in him, because she wanted to give him the chance to prove himself as a hero. And I certainly don't believe she thought it would kill him. Angel said it was sopposed to give strength to the person who wore it - not kill them.

But, in all seriousness, her reasons for choosing Spike as the 'Champion' didn't come to being about love, it came down to what she said.

I don't know about this. I don't know if she intended the giving of the amulet to him as a reward. It was more a privilege, or a gift he was deserving of.

Ok, agreed about Angel. What I meant was that Spike was there for her at a time when Angel, or anyone for that matter, wasn't (In 'Empty Spaces' - 'Touched'). Still, I feel that Spike's importance in helping Buffy out of her self-loathing phase after she comes back from the dead, and with her coming to terms with the "darkness" inside of her can't be understated. With his help, she was able to mature and grow.

I honestly don't think she did love him, but that's just my opinion.

I can't "“ I won't "“ believe that Buffy is the kind of person who would lie about loving someone. I have more respect for her character than that. Even to "make him feel better" or because she felt he deserved it. (This is the argument I have heard and once believed.) Riley also "deserved" her love, but she never told him. Joss said in the commentary for "Chosen" that Buffy meant what she said to Spike. She did love him. It's not really open to interpretation, if you believe that Joss should have the last say, like I do.

So, do you reconcile that? So you don't believe she loved him, I get that. But what do you make of Buffy's "I love you"? It happened, she said it, and it can't be dismissed, even if you don't believe her.

Spuffy was just as doomed from the start as Bangel was, and can therefore take on exactly the same connotations as you've described above. But Bangel is more than just a 'great story' or 'melodrama', and its rather dismissive to say so.

I don't think Spuffy was doomed. He died. They didn't have the chance to explore what they could have been together. Bangel did. For three years. And it still didn't work out. Just sayin'.

You see, this is what I have a bit of a problem with. You say it just comes down to opinion, and doesn't mean that either one is better, and then completely deprecate Bangel by saying it just makes for great TV, which suggests that you do think one is better than the other?

I did not intend at all for my comment about "Great TV" to appear flippant, because it was not at all intended that way. Quite the opposite, really. I meant it as a true praise. I truly think that the whole storyline with Angel turning into Angelus and being the Big Bad is one of the best plots in the whole show!

Also, my feelings for Spuffy are something I'm still working through. How I feel about things, it's changing. So, I apologize if I might seem contradictory at times. 😉 It's hard to explain something you love.

OK. I just don't see it, really.

I can, and do, accept that Buffy needed and relied on Spike throughout the series, but it's not that I refuse to accept she loved him, I just don't see it, it just doesn't invoke those feelings within me.

"Just don't see it?" I honestly find this hard to believe. Her affection is so strong for him in the last season, its obvious. Perhaps you should go back and re-watch S7 again. The way she acts with him; constantly saving him time and time again, even putting him before her friends, making escuses for him despite him being a threat to her friends, removing his chip, threatening to kill "allow" Spike to kill Wood if he threatened him again, mentioning to Willow why everyone thinks she's "still in love with Spike", the jealous look she gives Faith in 'Dirty Girls' when she's sitting on Spike's bed...and of course, admitting she "was there with him too" when he says it was the best night of his life in "Touched." And I won't even mention 'Chosen', since I already addressed it earlier in the thread.

It's nothing to do with feeling threatened or being a 'romantic' and not a 'realist'. Like I've always said, it just comes down to your own ideals about love, which as far as I'm concerned doesn't mean I'm not realistic or live with my head in the clouds.

Agreed. We all do have ideals about love that effect how we view fiction. Mine happens to be a little more jaded, a little more bitter. I'm well aware of my stellar history with men (lol). Maybe this is why I like Spuffy so much, who knows. And for the record, I didn't mean "romantic" as a derogatory term, which is how you're seeming to interpret it. I love romance like the rest of them. I just simply meant that Bangel was more romantic than Spuffy - I'm sure you agree.

Well, I'm one of those who believe that if Spike and Buffy meet again, it will be affectionate and she will be very happy to see him, and there will be tenderness and chemistry. But, that's just me hoping it'll happen 🙂
